Any Benefit to Backlinking an Article Repository?

Is there value in backlinking the actual directory of the articles on my site or should I not waste time with it and concentrate on backlinking the individual articles?

    There is always value in backlinking, unfortunately Google gives less and less weight to directories.

    I assume you have an actual article directory on your site in addition to
    pages that are separate?

    If so, your directory should be optimized separately and backlinked. The pages
    with single articles should be optimized according to the article content and
    backlinked, accordingly.
