Any dragon naturally speaking software users here?

hey guys, its come to the point where i have to invest in some speech to text software because my hands/wrists are causing me great discomfort/pain from being on the pc so much. It seems that dragon naturally speaking software in the leader in this market.

I have read lots of mixed reviews on amazon, some people say its fantastic and some say its rubbish.

I would like to hear if any warriors are using V10 DNS and if so what do you think of it?

Also im not sure whether the "standard" DNS would be suitable for me or if i would need the "preffered" version. what version are you guys using and whats the difference between these 2 versions?

I have read that you have to "train" the dragon once you buy it, i have a very strong dublin(ireland) accent and just wondered how long does it take to train the dragon so that it works good for you.

would love to hear some feedback from you guys

cheers

Alan

If you go to the Nuance.com website Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Product Suite you can read about all the different features they have. I more than one version on my laptops and desktops. But I love DNS 10 Preferred so much that I bought it for everyone on my staff. They're able to answer customer support questions twice as fast (when they're not accessing our knowledge base) and crank out some serious quality content quickly. Our most recent typing tests have shown they average 150 wpm. I've been using DNS for a long time and I average about 175 wpm.

It's a great piece of software. One of it's downsides, however, is that it has difficulty with certain accents, but it's nothing additional training can't handle.

I have the professional version of DNS 10, and used it extensively on my Windows XP machine..Great software, the learning curve is a bit steep, but once you train it (and yourself) it works.

Since upgrading to Windows 7, I find the built in Speech Processor is as good as if not better than DNS (this was available in Vista as well, but since I never used it I can't say how it compares to DNS or Windows 7).

I find that I'm faster typing than using this software. It's because it takes lots of training to get the words come out the way you want. Have a good sound card and great headset for the best results.

As someone who types decently fast to begin with, I find it's too cumbersome to actually use to create manuscripts.

However, I try to brainstorm and creatively generate copy by talking out loud. (It's a lot easier to create natural-sounding copy this way.) I used to use a voice recorder and transcribe, but Dragon has saved me tons of time in this task.

I can use Dragon to create my raw material, and then edit into shape by hand. Perhaps if I used it more, I could get better at using it in real-time, but as it is, time is what I have the least of.

So as a user, I'm very happy, though I don't necessarily use it as others do. When I'm in creative mode, I think faster than I can type, but when I'm in writing mode, I don't think in talking, I think in words on a page, and am edit and re-arranging intensive. It's not so handy for that kind of work.

          Hope that helps!

Really? !!! I've been using Dragon for a couple years now, and find the more times I train it, the more accurate it becomes. Training takes about 10 minutes.

I am a fast typist, but Dragon is much faster. It did take several trainings to make it work accurately.

I started with version 9, then 9.5, then 10, and now 10.1 because 10.1 is what is needed for Vista/Windows7.

It shouldn't have any trouble with a spoken accent because you read specific documents to train it, and Dragon learns how you pronounce the words. The training docs are built-in with Dragon. Just go to "tools" - "accuracy center" and train away.

    Hi,

I am a 'hunt and peck' typist (still pretty fast), but the more I use DNS, the more I love using it. I wear glasses, but sometimes at the end of the day I end up with eye strain, so it really helps out.

Like a couple of others said, the training is not that time consuming and it updates the changes each time you use.

Very happy with it and one of the top softwares I have purchased.

    Thanks,

    John

        Pattaya,

I have tried the voice recognition in Vista and Win 7 and it does work okay IMHO, I prefer DNS much more though. One word of note, I run 64bit version of Vista and I was told that I needed version 10.1, the one I got. The reason I say this is that right now there are some huge discounts around for version 10.0 which I'm told may have a problem with 64 bit OS's. Have not confirmed this but just what I heard.

BTW you in Pattaya now? I just got back 2 days ago, I stay at Irish Rovers on Soi LK, will be back again in April, got to love LOS!!!!!!

Shen, you are correct about this. I run 64 bit Vista on this laptop, and after conversation with Nuance (they make Dragon) I found it must be 10.1 for 64 bit or for Win7.

Unless DNS changed their policy in the last month, people who buy 10.0 get a free upgrade to 10.1.

The box I bought actually said 10.0 on the outside, but had 10.1 disks inside.

(And DNS totally rocks. Way better than Windows 7 built-in voice rec.)

thans for all your replies guys, it looks like dragon is a winner alright.

i remember seeing it on tigerdirect.com for a really silly price, like $49 or something but it wasnt available to be shipped to ireland. Do you guys think if i got my friend in the USA to order it for me from tiger that it would work ok in my PC? it wouldnt be region coded or anything would it?

    Hi Mate,

I use Dragon 10 preferred. And I love it. It took me only about 10 mins to train it (which is part of the set-up anyway)

And every now and then I have to correct a word...but when I correct it using Dragon, it rarely makes that mistake again. It actually gets more accurate the more you use it.

The only mistake I made with the software in the beginning was that I used to just edit the word manually on the page as I saw it. But the problem with this...is that Dragon wont know it made a mistake and it will keep happening.

So, when you get Dragon (and you should) make sure you correct the mistakes with dragon...so it remembers not to do it again.

I have a strong australian accent...and it picked up my words perfectly.

    Hope this helps?

    Take Care,

    Michael Silvester

Mitchy - I got DNS 10 at Target for like, $40 or so. It came with a headset in the box, and it works fine, but I rather use a little earpiece with a dangling mic that I got with a creative webcam a while back. I look like less of a dork when I record screencap videos that way too, lol.

But out of the box, it comes with everything you need and like everyone said, just do the training and it'll recognize you better and better.

In my experience, DNS 10 Preferred SMOKES anything else that's out there. I've got it going at about 175 wpm. I don't know anyone who can type that fast.

Why upgrade your copy of dragon?

I just go a new laptop and it has windows 7 so alot of my older programs don't run so smooth.

I figured that I could work something out...

So I checked on YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. and there are a ton of videos showing how to install dual operating systems, I am not a techie at all.

but I installed xp on my laptop as well as leaving windows 7 and dragon works now.

check it out, you can save some money with programs you already have.

  • Definitely a great program, but it all depends on the time you put in at the beginning.

You HAVE to train it, and it just keeps getting better the more you do. At my fastest have done about 105 words per minute, but if I type and mouth the words as I do it, I find I really have to slow down my voice. Try it and see what happens, and that should erase any doubt about speed.

Which just leaves the issue of training, and if you follow all the directions in the setup and training guides and put some real time into it, it will adapt.

Also, don't overlook the advice of talking to it in a smooth conversational style. It works a lot better if you do that than talk slow or choppy. Once it's trained, the best way to avoid doing that is don't even look at the computer screen when writing something long.

I'm a freelance content writer, and I can write top quality articles on subjects I know well in 15 minutes. That includes the time it takes to edit them. Try that with typing.

If you're wrists are bothering you, I say go for it.

Pattaya-Addict, I think that would be the best way to do it, in order to take advantage of the special ongoing deal here in the US! I'm pretty sure that there is no regional encoding in the software. While it has a bit of a learning curve (I was a little annoyed at some of the mistakes it made initially), over time it'll get better and become acclimated to how you use it. One thing that really irked me in the beginning is the slight delay you get in between speaking the sentence and having it appear on the screen. You just have to learn to push through that. In spite of this "delay", it's still actually far faster than typing, though sometimes it doesn't feel like it!

I've used dragon since the day it came out.

Today I walk the beaches of S. FL and talk to my Sony, then later plug into laptop while having lunch, and then push a button (after some quick proof reading) and it converts to PDF.

In one day, just by talking, I can create a specialty report in PDF and have an MP3 too.

It is as close to INSTANT product creation as it gets. It has more than paid for itself, a 1000 times over.

Like any TOOL, you have to learn how and WHY to use it.

    Good luck with your projects.
