Woah, did anyone else see this?

I was just doing a random search for
Michael Jackson on Google and I saw
"Latest results for Michael Jackson"
as scrolling Twitter updates.

The only other term I found this effect
for was "Star Wars".

There's a bunch of terms like this. Anytime something is trending on Twitter this tends to happen. For example, when Johnny Depp was supposedly dead and there was a million tweets about it the scrolling results were available.

      Its no longer there though.

I suspected if they did that with Twitter trends
but nothing showed up for Haiti.

So, your suggestion might be ruled out.

Yea they've been doing this for a little while now, I posted something on my twitter account to see if I would be in these results and what do ya know it showed up lol

The scrolling stops when the trend dies down, if that wasn't clear. And I do think that it's more for pop cultural things. Haiti was a major news story likely to have many "news oriented" current results.

It's Google's real time search, released late last year.

Official Google Blog: Relevance meets the real-time web

I get real-time results for Port au Prince but not by typing Haiti.

        Yeah, this is not new.

I have been telling people for quite some time that Twitter is the next generation search engine.

I actually made a blog post about this very topic earlier this month.

The problem with real time search results is that they are valid for a very short time only. So even if you manage to get your tweets shown in the real time results, they will be gone very soon.

Also it will get harder to show up in real time results as google refines their 'ranking criteria' for tweetes.

Yes, you are right about that being a problem.

But the power is that it has a social element which engages the users.

We do business with people we know, like, and trust.

If someone goes to search for a particular topic, this gives them the ability to find out quickly whether there is good or bad conversation going on for a product or service or whatever they are currently searching.

Also, they can use that information to make better buying decisions because they have a huge network of peers to tap into at any given time to get a recommendation.

That's the way I see it.

Asher, check out the keyword "iPad" right now. Pretty cool, huh? Scrolling results from Twitter, blogs, and news. The time these results are shown is incredibly short as people have mentioned, but with good timing it can your tweets or other web 2.0 properties at the top of Google in at least a few people's searches thus helping you be "discovered". Any time I tweet about a trending topic on any of my twitter accounts I tend to get new followers. To me that shows people are discovering (or auto adding) the account via real time search results either through Twitter's search engine or Google.

Yes I was going to say that I followed the iPad release by doing a search for #apple and then just using the updates option on the left side of the page. I had a scrolling page full of news. I am sure this will be a great way to get news going forward or even for following who is tweeting about the products or subjects in your niche. Nice way to find new people to follow/follow you.
