affiliate products & list building

With respect to the chances that it's down to which niche, and testing/tracking, can anyone say whether an opt-in page (list building) is necessarily an appropriate way to promote affiliate products? Does a list not lend itself better as a vehicle for promoting low-to-high end product funnels?

I have set up 3 page options; an opt-in, a product review, and obviously a direct link-to-an-affiliate-product page. I know that most places will not accept a direct affilate link anyway.

I shall be placing links in all the places you do, i.e. forums, twitter, article sigs, etc. and am considering which links could be more appropriate to which platform. I'm cautiously assuming that a variation, and tracking is the way to go? but would value your input anyway. Thanks

I use lists without a funnel; I just get 3-6 different products in the niche (that I like!) and rotate them. Hope that helps!
