Domain or Subdomain

This is the first time I have started a post and I'm not sure I am in the right area so please excuse me if I have made a mistake.
I am finally settling down to carying out one project from start to finish rather than flitting between lots of different schemes and have been concentrating on keywords.
In the course I am following states that I should have a domain name that is my keyword as this will make me rank higher in Google, whilst I understand this I want to create several mini sites around the same niche so I thought if I set up a generic domain based on the niche could I add subdomains based on the keywords I am using?
eg Main Domain - www .dogtraining.com
Sub Domain - www .stopbarking.dogtraining.com
I could then set up the main site linking to the other sites.
Would this work or am I wasting my time, does a subdomain have as much effect as a domain name?
If anybody could give me some advice I would be really grateful
