Hey guys I'm based in montreal.

and my business is starting to make money.

I've checked online but cant find any good resources for online business tax info.

I plan to discuss with a tax expert but wanted to educate myself more before I spoke to one.

just wanted advice from a canadian on the following.

do I have to pay/charge GST/QST to customers both quebec and international?

I think I only have to charge it if its customers within the province.

thanks to anyone who can help

I am not a tax expert, but did to through this last year. Spent a lot of time and money on getting accountants lawyers to set my business right.

I am in Ontario, you only have to charge people in your province taxes, not outside your province. What I do is I eat up the cost as a business expense since you will discourage them from buying for being local.

Revenu Québec - GST and QST

You can also call Revenu Quebec or go to one of their offices; they'll be more than willing to help. (Or, at least, that's been my experience. It's your tax dollars that are providing the service, so use 'em. :-) )

And a nice little site for Canadian business, in general:

Thanks ellej that is a great link.

      Thanks Suzanne.

I looked a bit more and found a good section on e-commerce and tax.

and yes it was hard going.

Ideally I would like to speak to an IM accountant but finding those is going to be difficult i think.

Out of interest what are you currently doing with taxes??

I was looking at Paypal, and I can set up a taxing system easily on there.
Pick the province put in the tax % PST and HST and off you go.

Then it would be a case of registering to submit payments.

I looked at international sales, and that got very confusing as you might have to charge international customers GST.

any thanks for the advice and links

Dan, I looked for a IM Accountant (I think before my WD days) and could not find it. I even thought about partnering up with a accountant and creating a IM accountant ebook , I went with a good in person accountant since digging into it, as much as we like to think, it is not that much different.

    Cheers,
    Mukul
