Nope, I wouldn't buy it, I hear it's completely stuffed with DRM and it's impossible to share anything on it.. anybody hear differently?

On the other hand I might buy it to see how well it handles eBook protection.. maybe this is finally a way to sell eBooks (PDFs, etc) without having to worry about them being stolen or put on RapidShare.

Nope, i have got many reasons why the device would be a fail. Its first of all having the OS that the iPhone had, so multitasking is not possible, and here are many other reasons i listed -

If ebooks will be prevented from being pirated on ipad, I think sales will go worse for ebook creators.

It's because most of the pirates will actually go buy the ebook if the information is really good and has helped them a lot.

Well for my commuter user needs I need atleast 4 cores 4 Gb RAM and 100Mbit/s internet. So there is no way I am going to buy it. OK maybe to make it as digital photo frame or something more useless.

    No.

Initially I thought I would, but apparently you can't multitask and it doesn't have an usb port.
It doesn't have a camera either.

I already have an iPhone and a macbook. I love apple products and I see myself buying more in the future.
I obviouslt don't NEED an iPad but I would've bought it based on it being 'cool'.
When I found out they turned it into an oversized ipod touch, I was really disappointed. So nope, not buying this one...

      Same here.
I too have a macbook, an iPhone and also iPod nano. Being a fan of Apple products, i would have expected more from this tablet device but it was a disappointment to see that the device is nothing more than a stretched iPhone.

I would buy just for the fact that its damn cool...honestly to me its much more appealing then a netbook...I would just have a stronger laptop instead of a netbook, my normal desktop pc and then the iPad or some other tablet in the future. I never liked netbooks...too small and crowded for my taste...this fits exactly in my needs of "consuming content"

...reading my mail on it, google reader, browsing the web, checking out some clips on YT...thats the way I see it, as a "content consuming device", not creating and managing products or business on it.

I'm going to go have a play with one, I rather liked the idea of using it as a multi media station hooking up to my AV/Home cinema system.

With the right apps, it should be possible to preview the movies on the screen, then flick them to the PJ using a remote apps to the wifi connection on the PJ.

I also read a lot of e-material, the iphone's to small to be truly comfortable and I don't like sitting at the PC at night, prefer to be say on the sofa with the wife and glass of vino.

This device looks the right kind of size to sit with comfortably on the lap , has the excellent Ipod usability and interface, could be perfect for reading with, wasn't impressed with the kindle.

Impossible to make a call until I've had one in my hands and had a good play with it but on paper, despite some of the negatives, it could be just what I'm after.

Some of the negatives listed like " unprotected screen" can be resolved with a cover which no doubt will be available on mass within weeks.

Don't like curved edges?? Seriously, seems a bit desperate to manage 11 things he didn't like.

    No. Why?
    Short answer: It's crap.
Long answer: Let's see. It's not a phone, it's not a pc. I can't install custom software. No writing recognition. Must buy additional usb adapters to for connection. Need to buy software from Appstore. No webcam. No real use. It isn't really a tablet! Oh, and the backbreaker - IT CAN'T DO MULTITASKING (seriously, wtf?). I guess their plan is to release a crap version of the product now so people buy it. Then release a better version and get the same people buy it again.

The only reason why I was considering buying this is to read .pdf and .doc files easily. This could benefit for my studies, but it's just not worth the price tag and I prefer listening to audiobooks over reading them (much more efficient). And you won't be able to put this thing in your pocket!

    Basically this:

But on the flip side if you consider it:
no custom software - less security risks, every app is verified and tested before approved...this is awesome for the average consumer.

no multitasking - means that sweet ~8 hours battery life

I do agree that it doesn't really fit into a certain category, but as a content consuming device it is really good.

No multitasking means i can't listen to music and browse the web. Where is the fun in that?
Also, why would apps be risky? I mean, if you use common sense when installing something, you shouldn't have any problems.

In what way? There are numerous devices that are better at consuming content for cheaper and have more features. I'm really baffled by the device primarily because they're not just saying it is what it is.

"Did you want a big iPod touch?"

It's too expensive for what it is, and it's a failed opportunity to provide something the market really REALLY wants, namely a tablet notebook from apple.

If they made one I would buy it today. Today.

I guess it just depends on each ones lifestyle...for me, browsing the web on this device while sitting on my couch is much more appealing then any crowded netbook.

Maybe its just me, because I have always hated netbooks and I always wanted something in between a "true power" laptop and my phone...and the netbook didn't cut it for me.

I won't put my hand in fire for the iPad tho until I had the chance to use it extensively but as it stands at this point...its much better for me then a netbook.

So my lineup would me Desktop > 15" laptop > tablet > phone.

And in terms of the app security...the majority of people don't have a clue about protecting their computer...if they have a relative that knows computers or if the sellers puts it with an antivirus fine.

At CES they just unveiled these new notebooks whose screens come off to become a tablet with what is essentially a docking station/storage/keyboard base. They will cost around $1000. That is like a million times better than this thing.

But yeah, you make an interesting point and the point is that Apple generally sucks at inventing new things. They're great at inventing the best of a thing.

The Newton was a failure, because PDAs didn't even exist.

iPod succeeds not as the first, but the BEST mp3 player.
iPhone succeeds as the BEST phone.
iPad is the BEST... iPad? I guess?

It's something new that's not really making a good case for itself existing. IF it had the missing features the previous poster cited, MAYBE. Like if it could get on the web using my data plan? That COULD be cool.

As it is now, it's just meh.

If Apple would just make a tablet notebook, I'd become an apple fanboy. The Max iPad is just a big ipod touch as far as I can tell. I can get a tablet notebook for that price, and it'll actually be a REAL computer.

But then again, I don't have an iphone or any other apple products. I even ditched my iPod for a Creative Zen Stone a while back. Maybe it just doesn't fit in my lifestyle, or the way I use computers.

I really dig those notebooks they just unveiled at CES where the screen comes off and becomes a tablet essentially like the iPad. I really want someone to just make a laptop that's got a Wacom Intuos as the screen though.

You listening computer world!? I want to draw on my laptop screen dammit! With pressure sensitivity! Is that too much to ask?!

Yes I would absolutely buy one

I need something that boots FAST, I can consume VAST amounts of media and I can run certain apps (inc email). My iPhone ALMOST fits the bill, but it is just too small.

This fits my need perfectly. There are plenty of apps for what I want to do and it will make my commute MUCH more productive (and enjoyable).

On top of that I can dump my paper organiser (a nice levenger) - so there is no noticeable change in weight that I lug around.

I think it depends VERY much on your lifestyle/needs, but this seems to fit the bill....

Having said that I will wait until i see how they perform for a few thousand peeps before I jump in!

Lenovo will totally rock the world with that thing IF they can get rid of the screen lag/input lag...I watched every possible hands on video with that product when the screen was a tablet and in everyone of them the UI/OS was VERY VERY slow. If they can't fix that...its useless.

At least the iPad is blazing fast as opening apps, browsing etc...

Another one that I think people overlook is the Notion Ink. Adam...the demo looks amazing and some stuff blew me away...and they said they will improve in the final version, so we will just have to wait and see.

I think you put your finger on it Colin - iPad is the best....?

iPod - portable music was proven demand (remember the Sony Walkman) and portable video is a stroke of genius opening new doors for iPod

iPhone - obviously, mobile phone converged with other apps is a proven market

What will be the proven demand beyind iPad - I don't get it? Video makes the most sense - but for that itunes needs to get a whole lot beefier with content before I'll buy into that. eBook reader - won't come close to the experience of a Kindle. Next evolution of the laptop - what if you write (type) more than you read, then it doesn't seem like a good choice...

    Anyway...still looking for why?

I'm definitely going to buy an iPad. I'm also going to buy an iPhone, a Kindle, a 60-inch LCD T.V. & a jet-pack. I'm just going to wait a year or two to get them all at steep discounts. May have to wait a bit longer on the jet-pack. I rarely ever jump on to the hype train and buy something for 40% more when I can wait a bit, let 'em work out the kinks, and give me a solid product for a lot less money.

I wouldn't buy it. But then, I wouldn't buy an iPhone either. Or a Blackberry.

I found real, honest-to-God utility benefits in every phone advance up through the elementary cell phone. And in every computing advance up through the elementary laptop computer. Most things since are, IMO, fluff.

That's not to say I think real technological advance is dead. I just think legitimately useful breakthroughs happen at a much slower pace than the manufacturers want us to believe.

    I'd buy one.

If this has a fraction of the potential I think it's got for publishing and reading of e-books, I want one to play with so I can publish the right type of content for it.

This thing WILL sell. It will sell LOTS. People WILL read e-books on them, LOTS of e-books. I'd like a piece of that and if that's the only reason, then yes, I'd buy one.

And I might be in a minority on this forum, but I happen to like what it does too and think it looks great.
