What are your pet hates in IM...

Mine is buying a tool and the instructions presuppose I'm not a gibbering idiot.

I need clear concise step by step instructions folks. If you don't give them out with your product, then expect your refunds to be higher.

Assume I don't know what I'm doing (cos I usually don't), and give me video instructions on how to do something rather than just a ratty text file

This for instance Modify the html code parameter "v_flvbase" to reference the final website location of your video means absolutely nothing to me (grrr)

YES! I freaking HATE that too! Idiots of the world, UNITE! We can start a movement, Kim.

My other peeve is forced opt-ins. Don't sell me something, take my money, then hold the product or service hostage by forcing me to opt-in before you'll give me access to it. That's unethical at worst and sloppy, lazy marketing at best. At the very least, tell me on your sales page that payment includes BOTH money AND my subscription to your list. GRRR!

I have a few, but here's a couple that immediately spring to mind

Captcha codes that are unreadable, e.g it's not clear if it is a number 0 or a letter o. Then when you get it wrong, you have to fill out the form again.

Generalizations and blanket statements - 'all spinners are useless', 'nofollow = no link juice', 'all the good .com domains are taken' etc etc.

Liam! I was just messing with a Captcha form this morning that was driving me nuts! I'm glad the ability to complete one of those forms correctly the first time is not a pre-requisite for making money online.

      cheers,

What scares me about those things is half the time I can barely manage them now, at 60 I can't imagine my eye site is going to be any better, it's going to take me 30 minutes to login to gmail.

My biggest pet hate in IM? Work!!!

I was told all I had to do was buy their program, "press the button", go to sleep, and I would wake up rich!
I wasn't too impressed at the idea of having to push the button myself either! And it was all a filthy lie! I need to actually put in some effort to make money! What a cruel concept! ;.)

In truth though, I can't cope with Captchas that are impossible to make out! Especially when mass posting to directories or rss feeds!!!

And two hours to put up a single CraigsList ad.

Dang the spammers who make captcha necessary!

      .
      1. When Google suspects that I am doing too many automated searches when I am just at my laptop doing one search through their search box. Then when I go to their help page they say that I should type in the captcha code to say I'm not a robot and if I don't see the captcha code I should check my system for spyware by downloading some software. I don't show the captcha and I don't have spyware - I use a Mac.

      2. People who hype a tool to do something and forget to mention that it only works on a PC which I don't find out until opting in to their list and downloading the zip file and unarchiving a zip file which is unuseable on my Mac. I'm going to qualify this by saying that more and more Macs are being bought (even the Guru's are switching over) so the excuse that PC's are the dominant personal computer in the market is not an excuse for not keeping us in mind when you are offering tools for IM'ers.

I was thinking of this question in terms of being the seller.

I hate when people beg, plead and cry for my help -- which I gladly give. And then as soon as I start helping, they make a million and one excuses why they can't do the things I'm advising them to do. I'm not saying they disagree with the advice. Instead, they are just excusing themselves from taking action.

Example excuse: "You don't have kids. You don't know what it's like to find time to do this stuff."

Me: "Maybe I don't have kids. But I know a woman whose business is the sole income for her, her disabled husband, her mother in law and her TEN kids. So don't tell me you can't do this because you have kids."

    Cheers,
    Becky

Yikes so far I agree with everyone's

What a miserable moo I am lol

This isn't an IM hate, but it does drive me nuts

Breaking in a new computer is a real pain in the bum.

It took me six months to finally convert over to my last one a couple of years ago.

I'm just setting up a new desktop now (I've had for 3 weeks), and I just know its gonna take me ages to get comfortable with it. (sigh)

An email list that I sign up for that sends me emails everyday or even more than once a day. That really irritates the you know what out of me and I push the unsubscribe button.

I don't care how great a marketer he or she is or how much money he or she makes,
(unless it is a 5 day ecourse) I do not need to receive an "up to the minute" email from them everyday.

If I did, I'd follow them on twitter.

    I HATE the product/WSO troll's !!!

The people that browse through the WSO section and see whats popular (nothing wrong with that, its just good research), then turn around and make a product on that topic but ......
they have never even tried that particular method/idea/technique !!!

They stick some nice new fancy graphics on it and then basically reword some other guys work and then sell it!! The same stuff is being sold as "new" week after week, it has to stop!

If you try to bring this up in the sales thread, it don't last long as they usually have tons of extra warrior accounts and just report your post!

Its not fair on the people who have released the method and have actually "worked" the system and had success.

I made a decision a long time ago never to participate in the IM niche (neeesshh, lol) untill I had a unique or different spin on something and can actually add value to someones life, even though alot of the "wso's" I could have done a better job with but I can't take people's money and sell them something I CAN'T BACK UP, its just wrong.

There are people who just do WSO's, and nothing else, they don't even bother to at least try the methods they are apparently amazing at!

Wow, sorry for the rant, never used so many exclamation marks.

    Thanks

This is great. I always wanted to be able to hit the "all the above" button on a questionnaire and I finally get to do it.

One thing that really ticks me off and has not been mentioned are the IMers who show their PayPal accounts but who fail to mention that their list is 400,000 strong.

Along the same lines as this is the people who show a screen shot of their Paypal/Clickbank as proof of how powerful the system is, what they fail to mention is the numbers shown in the screen shot are from sales for the very product they are selling and not what the product teaches.

Not all do this I must add but there are many that do.

I hate sales copy that insults my intelligence and talks to me like I'm an inept loser with the mind and self awareness of a 2 year old.

I hate being told that if I decide not to invest is some high ticket product/program that I have issues with money and that the only way to solve those issues is to invest in that product/program.

I hate being terrorized with the turbo-testosterone mindset that this program/product/service is my only way to make sure that I don't find myself living in a cardboard box under the interstate overpass by next week.

About unreadable "captcha" codes; there is a project that uses these to help convert books.
The person solving the captcha is actually doing Image character recognition that, I suppose, a digital image scanner can't convert to text as it is to smudge, faded or just plain not reading it.

Soooo, sleep easy knowing you are helping someone for free.
I forgot where I read of this but, if I recall correctly, it is through some university in the USA.

as far as annoyances, just getting hammered with emails from 15 different people with the exact same copy and pasted message.

      That sounds vaguely familiar.

      But how does it work?

Because a digital image scanner must be able to understand the text... OR it must have already been converted by someone else... otherwise the captcha software wouldn't know whether I was typing the text in correctly or not.

So I don't see how people typing that stuff in helps, since it's already been converted and/or is readable. Unless I'm totally thinking about this in the wrong way.

Not a question directed at you (John), just throwing an open question out to anyone who knows.

You can read about the project in detail here:

        reCAPTCHA: Stop Spam, Read Books

But the relevant part from the "What is reCAPHCA?" page:

But if a computer can't read such a CAPTCHA, how does the system know the correct answer to the puzzle? Here's how: Each new word that cannot be read correctly by OCR is given to a user in conjunction with another word for which the answer is already known. The user is then asked to read both words. If they solve the one for which the answer is known, the system assumes their answer is correct for the new one. The system then gives the new image to a number of other people to determine, with higher confidence, whether the original answer was correct.
        Neat, huh?

It is also where he gets his writing knowledge from. Hundreds of years of living history. Yep. He's not fooling me.
Hate to break this to you, Matt, but this statement just made Zeuss about 500% more attractive to about half (if not more) of the female audience.

Vampires are DEAD sexy! (Pardon the pun. Or not.)

See what I mean? He already had you hypnotized into thinking he was attractive

Well Matt, lots of ladies here think you're incredibly handsome. Of course, many women don't pay any attention to men with paltry three-figure post counts.

          Cheers,

              Matt,

Turn that frown upside down because it's not the size of the hammer you're using, but how you throw it at the nail that counts the most

                  Me too

My pet peeve in IM is when people blame everyone else for their lack of success when
they need to look in the mirror and be honest with themselves as to the REAL reasons
why they are still not successful.

I hate that it's so easy to learn to create and sell information online and profit from it. It allows people to succeed with so little effort that it draws the kind of people others in this thread have described - people who sell research without results. By itself, informational reports are fine, but the marketing uses results to sell.

I also hate that for some reason, bottom feeders can discover how easy it is to create and sell information online, while people with valuable information struggle to overcome self doubt and just get started already. Myself included.

Think of the worst IM product you ever bought. Can you do better? Then do it, and go try to find all the people who bought the other one and give them yours for free. Collect testimonials. Go where you bought the crappy product and start competing. You will win.

If anyone would like to try this method and give me half the money, you are welcome to.

I hate it when things are presented as an anyone can do it thing when in fact most could not. promises of riches deliverability of dirt people being taken advantage of and others purporting the next big thing which usually turns out to be as much the next big thing as a snail is a lobster.

I have another one here at the forum.

When someone, usually a newbie posts a question and then another semi-newbie has the Google link and says "You can find it here by doing a simple Google search".

The point of the forum is to have an interaction with others about the subject of the question or to allow one Warrior to have an opportunity to help another Warrior and build relationships.

Plenty of us older veteran Warriors could pull that "already been asked" crap all day long if we wanted to.

Believe me, we have seen just about every question there is and we are still here interacting and answering because this is an experience and a community and not the Wikipedia of IM answers.

      Exactly!!!

That bugs me too. Some other forums insist that you never ask the same question twice. Look it up!! Do research you lazy dork!! That only works for a knowledge base.

A forum is a conversation and during conversation people bring up the same things periodically. There is new information, there are new insights, and opinions. There are new people to bounce questions off.

What is the best autoresponder? I've seen that brought up over and over. You know... information changes over time and perhaps there is a new one that is not listed in the old thread. Perhaps the person asking knows very well all the autoresponders that exist except with the question someone says "I'm just coding a new one". That is new information that no one had and wouldn't have been discovered by looking at old threads.

I agree with that to an extent, but not fully. It depends on what's being asked I guess.

Sometimes, when it is such a simple thing, that would get you a QUICKER answer than going out of your way to post a thread on the forum, then it is kind of annoying to see it.

For example.. someone posted a thread right now asking something to the effect of "what is a subdomain, I am signing up for a hosting package and I am completely confused".

Why not do a Google search for the term SUBDOMAIN, where the first page on the results is the wikipedia page about the term, and will tell you anything and everything you wanna know about the subject. Then, when you have a clearer understanding of what it is, maybe post something here if you need further clarification. This is also beneficial as you get an answer to your extremely simple question immediately and then get on with your business, instead of waiting for someone to reply on the forum.

Again, this is not a personal attack to whoever made the above mentioned post, nor the only example around. I could sit here all day if I went and picked out such posts.

I also understand that this is an issue of different perspectives, so everyone may not agree with mine, but I just think there's something to be said about at least doing a simple, lazy search on Google or this forum before you start a brand new thread for thousands of eyeballs... to ask something as mundane as "How do I spell my name?".

Mostly my own bad habits. Like procrastinating and getting sidetracked when I'm doing research. And reading threads like this when I should be working.

        Well, that too.

For example, "BARE with me" always gives me pause. It's "BEAR with me," unless of course you're asking your readers to get naked.

When purchasing IM products online, I'd have to say very long and oblique salesletters, and THEN having to deal with One Time Offers where it seems like they intentionally left out a missing part of the puzzle to put into the OTO!
