Is a contest the right way to get this done?

I have recently bought a domain and hosting and had it set up with a Wordpress blog by a member of this forum ( Thanks go to Srikanth for this one; you are doing a great job man). I want to fill it up with great quality content and I wonder if doing a contest for the best content would be a better alternative than having it comissioned bit by bit.

The way I see it, if I commission, say 50 articles at 20$ a piece chances are I will get some decent content written, although I will have to do it in tranches to accomodate the cost.

If instead I run a contest in which i give higher prices for the top ones what I get is a number of people working really hard at getting the best article/post/tutorial they can for the chance of a higher price.

What are your thought on this? Is it acceptable? How would you structure such a contest?

You can get pretty good articles for $8 - $10. Even less if you find a good deal in the WSO forum.

To be honest, I don't think any good writers are going to write for free, for a chance to possibly earn some money... even if it could be more.

Good writers should be busy because there's a market for them and busy people don't usually work for free.

My real questions are whether this format would improve the quality of the content written and if this way of doing it would also build more momentum into the site with the thrill of the competition and all that.

Also, because of the nature of the content that needs to be written ( tutorials, mini tutorials, tips and tricks) I guess I would be looking at users than professinal writers that might have a harder time researching form scratch rather than writing from experience.

Considering Video tutorials are also accepted I guess I was hoping this formula would incentivize creating great quality content, but then again I could be wrong.

Can anyone else elaborate on the topic please?
