If your product is so good, give it to me ...

Did you ever get something like this?

If your product is so good, give it to me free, if it works I'll pay you.

What? You won't?

Ah ha!! Got you!

That means your product doesn't work. Didn't think so.

In younger days I used to think the same way. Why should I pay for an information product first and then find out if it works? If they would just let me have it, then pay them IF it works, that would be fair wouldn't it?

The thing I didn't know then was that most information on "How to" does work especially coming from a successful person. The thing that might not work is "me". Back then I wanted to put the burden of proof on the product. Those selling the information were a bit wiser and could see that the weak link in the chain was not the product, but me!

If any of them would have let me take the product for free with the condition that "if it works" or "when I make money" they would get paid, they would have never gotten paid. Heck most people never follow through with all the information they pay for. I didn't know that back then.

Scott, I used to get that a lot back in my mlm days. People wanted to join, but they didn't want to pony up the fees. But if I just paid their way in, they'd make me rich...

I handled it by giving them a copy of "my" system, and told them that if they worked the system and brought in two new members, I would pay their fees and place the new members under them.

You're right, I never did have to write that check...

    That's why I'm a little worry with offering a $1 dollar trial.

99% of the people actually never do during the 30 days what they should, so they think that the membership didn't deliver and quit.

You keep the few which actually are interested into your product and the others which forgot to cancel.

AGREED whole -heartedly. What you said rings a bell with me

Many people have said the same thing with me..

Let me test- if its good- I will pay..

Truth is- the product is not the weakest link like how Scott nicely puts it- but the person who gets it.

If those who gets it actually out in the effort- IT will work. Question is- will they?

    awesome post, scott!

so he asked me to write the letter, so I did.

My friend goes to meet with the client and he
decides he wants to turn the piece into a flier
      and hand deliver them

He then says "I want to pay you based upon
      sales"
. Boy, if only life worked that way

The test mailing and our services were only going to
cost $2500 and he thought that was too much

This was for a builder/remodeling business

      oh well, life goes on
Paul, one thing you need to know is that builders and other contractors are accustomed to working on credit.

A builder will sell a house, for example.

      > He goes to the land prep subcontractor and hires him to grade the lot.
      > He hires a company to build the foundation.
      > He contracts for the lumber, etc. to build the house.
      > And so on, until the house is completed.

The closing is scheduled. Not until then does the builder start paying bills. And he'll only pay those he can't convince to wait until after closing. The rest don't see a penny until the builder gets paid.

So hearing that a builder proposed paying for a job after it was completed is not a surprise. It's second nature. Even scrupulously honest builders (if there is such a thing) tend to be masters of the slow pay.

Here's another approach that I've received several times.

"Why don't you just give away your program if you really want to help people?"

Apparently, they think that you shouldn't be making money on something you've produced to help others. If you're charging for it, you're scamming them. Or you are greedy, are just after their money and really don't care about them at all.

You have to shake your head in dismay at such thinking.

That's so true! If they went to a doctor would they expect to pay? Many doctors simply want to help people. That's what motivated them to become a doctor. They still charge however even if they do give away a lot of free services periodically.

Yep I get PM's like this the whole time.. I just ignore them but they are annoying.

It's a tell tale sign that people don't want to invest in themselves, and will probably never put the information into action anyway.

It is a sad commentary, as others have mentioned. ..but it goes even deeper.

These same people would actually stand to benefit more if they had to pay a GREATER price than others were charged - let alone getting it for 'free' or on spec.

If they were compelled to pay much more than normal, their chances of at least implementing it would go up considerably. ...and of course the chances of success go up in direct proportion to how much 'implementing' goes on.

In my experience, to succeed people need to have ALOT of skin in the game, not the least amount.

But these folks would probably not understand the concept of "bigger investment equals bigger commitment equal bigger results" ....oh well.

    Yep!

I've gottenplenty of these emails as well

"Jason, please coach me for free and I will pay you a % of money I earn from what you show me"

As if my time is worthless, UNLESS they make money of course.

I do freely point people in the right direction quite often without asking them for money, but that's about as far as I will go.

My time is limited and precious.

Balancing a wife, 3 kids 3 yrs of age or less, and running 2 companies eats up
    a lot of my time.

Add to that activities to help me get away from it all and then my time is almost
    completely spoken for.

People think we just sit around all day and do nothing I guess.

I'm going to start doing this same thing in other areas of my life. Examples:

-- Tell the doctor I'll pay only IF s/he "cures" me. (Of course why do doctors charge anything? Don't they want to help people?)

-- I'll write to Slim Quick and tell them I'll pay for their shakes IF I actually lose weight. Otherwise, they're outta luck, Chuck.

-- I'm not going to pay for any restaurant meals from now on. I mean come on... it's food. A necessity. They shouldn't charge for that.

-- I'll demand that the theater manager lets me in free to the next comedy movie I go see. IF I actually laugh out loud at least once during the movie, then I'll pay.

-- I think I'll order a subscription to a travel magazine. But I'm not paying for the subscription unless I actually travel to the places they tell me about.

    ...

    cheers,
    Becky

You still have a chance with these people w/ a good money back guarantee. If your product really is that good, then a money back guarantee won't hurt it.

EXACTLY - that's what money back guarantees are for.

      That's what I tell them.

But more times than not, if they say it's bc they have no money, then I just
tell them to go to BumMarketingMethod.com

I must have told hundreds of people individually through email to get things
going with that, then to come back to me when they had some money to
      invest in their business.

      You are very welcome Travis!!!

The best chance you have with these people (regardless of product quality) is to encourage them to change their mindset.

I tried this several months ago at the Warrior Forum. 15 warriors were given my ebook on how to turn literally every off line business into a paying client.

I did not ask to be paid when they got results and nor did they offer but I did ask for some feed back. To this day I have only heard from one of them!

It seems to me that people only use what they think of as 'internet marketing' and anything that smacks of common sense can be ignored -as can any idiot daft enough to expect them to do what they said they would do if given a freebie.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!
