Are you doing it? Is it worth it? I don't really bother with privately registering most of my domains since it seems like a huge waste of money, are you doing it and if so is it worth it?

    Andrew,

I am with 1&1 and do it. Doesn't cost any extra.

I know both sides of the for or against, but chose to go this way. And it is a privacy thing.

    Thanks,

    John

I don't do it, mostly because I sell sites and I don't mind having an easy way for people to contact me about a site they might want to buy.

    Andrew,

I haven't paid any extra since I have been with them, a few years now. They did just raise the yearly rate for registration, but is still cheaper than say, Go Daddy.

    Been very happy with them.

    Thanks,

    John

Andrew, I use namecheap, which also gives you free private domain registration (included with standard domain purchase).

Plan to sell a site = no private reg
Plan to work a competitive niche = yes private reg

    That's my formula.

If you don't want spam, it's worth it.

There are many, many sites that will SCRAPE the info from WHOIS
and POST IT on their site ( DomainTools.com being one ) and when
bots crawl these other sites, they get your email.

You only need to get on ONE spam list before you're sold to another 10
then before you know it you get 5 - 500 spam emails a day
and likely to an important business email account.

Don't do this unless you want your domain taken away from you. You are required by law to have accurate information in your Whois.

This way you will get free private registration. Is there any flaw in this method>?

Also keep in mind that using "privacy" on your domain is not effective in keeping people from learning who owns the domain. Think of it like locking your front door. That only serves to keep the general population out. It does not keep out anyone determined to get in. There are many "windows" they can get in through.

The COI factor comes in under a part of CAN-SPAM and related rules that discuss the concept of affirmative consent, for those who might notice that it's not discussed in the article...
