AHHHHHH!! Shut Up! IPAD....

Wow...I think I'm going to get off the net for the next two months. A lot of people seem slightly nuts.

I will be glad to eat my words if that day comes, but in my opinion the Ipad is going to sell like gangbusters.

I find this all funny and strangely familiar. Remember the Kindle? :-) It sucks, it blows, it's stupid. Uh, yea ok. But those same people wouldn't mind having the money from the sales that thing has brought in.

Here's what kills me most of all. The people who say it doesn't have a phone.

Are you kidding me?

Are you seriously thinking about not being able to put this big thing upside your frickin head and talking to someone?

I suppose some people would actually do that and feel ok with it :-) Wow

It doesn't have a camera?

Oh darn...you mean I won't be able to stick this large object in peoples faces and take a pic? Oh man...bummer.

Flash? Well, flash may go away. Things evolve and some things die. That's the way it is. It may not die. But if you think the lack of flash is going to stop the sales of this thing I would urge you to rethink that.

They say something in this video that is very true:

Something like "I don't have to conform to it, it conforms to me"...A tower computer? You're stuck to that thing like glue. You can't move, you can do anything except be there with it.

A laptop? I'm sick of those also. Leg chapping junk with wires and no battery capacity.

LOL!

The first thing I thought not long after getting an Itouch was I wish this thing was bigger...if only. Well, now it is...

Well that's my take on the Ipad. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Allen

Very rarely can see a product launch that dominates the global media.

    Classic and inspiring.

I'm still not sure if it can handle multi-tasking, anyone know?

I've always thought to myself, if only the iphone was a bit bigger and had more power, it would be perfect. Looks like I got my wish

It could do speaker phone and webcam.. but that's not what it was intended to do and future versions might.

I think it looks cool. There will always be those who don't want/need one and to me the device is not a necessity, only a cool device to have. In this economy it's amazing if they can sell it. they'll have to price it down.. but Apple can sell anything now..

Let me start by saying I don't use Apple products, so this scathing pre-review is likely biased.

Here's what I see as its biggest problem...

It's too dang shiny! Yep, with how much I'd use it, it would take a lot of time just to keep it clean. And, no, I'm not going to stop eating Cheetos.

So, Apple can keep their sleek, shiny, ultra-cool looking, groundbreaking, new-fangled gizmo; and I'll be content to vacuum orange-colored crumbs out of my laptop keyboard from time to time.

    All the best,

Here's what gets me. Apple loves to cripple its devices intentionally, and here's solid evidence of this - the hacker community has developed a hacked "jailbreak" version of the iPod Touch and iPhone that has been able to multitask for a while now, and my guess is that it won't be long before they come out with a "jailbreak" version for the latest iPhone OS 3.2 (which is what the iPad will run when it comes out). Just google "iphone jailbreak video", poke around, and you will be able to catch some GLORIOUS videos of the iPhone multitasking...to me that is absolutely damning evidence of Apple intentionally limiting its hardware from doing things that people want it to do! It is quite obvious that the functionality is there, and the hacked "jailbreak" version just unlocks this functionality that was there all along.

Apple's a major contributor to the HTML 5 effort, which is supposed to provide a new industry-standard way to run video inside web pages.

My guess is that Apple hopes by the time the iPad is shipped, they'll have an official HTML 5 spec finished. Then the iPad will be the ultimate place to run browser-based video that doesn't require anything from Adobe. Next stop, HTML 5 in Safari, even on Windows.

This would give Apple a great story for developers and users alike about how iPad apps and content can be used on Macs and PC's... but of course if you want to carry it around in the ultimate mobile multitouch device, guess who's got the only game in town? (Same thing as iTunes and iPod.)

My next guess is that inside Apple's labs, Flash runs perfectly on the iPad. That's plan B in case HTML 5 can't get far enough along by release date. Just before release to manufacturing, someone will flip a switch for which video tech gets compiled into the first Pads for sale. Same thought process as their having had MacOS on Intel for years before the official changeover.

The first thing I thought not long after getting an Itouch was I wish this thing was bigger...if only. Well, now it is.... Can't wait for it to arrive!
You were probably their ideal target customer. If they can get Allen to buy it, he'll be happy and 100,000 Warriors will have to get one too and make content for it.

In my opinion, the comments about it not being a
phone are b/c (from what I know about it) it's a
    watered down version of everything.

If all it does is as far as applications and software
is run apps similar to the iPod/iPhone apps, then it's
not as useful as a laptop.

If it doesn't make calls, then it's not as useful as the iPhone...
but good point about holding up a 10 inch or whatever
device to your head to talk on

So, now it's basically just a larger version of the iPod (with less
    storage) that can read ebooks...

I see no purpose for it.

    BUT...

I do see it selling well. People that like Macs become
fanatics about it and would buy Steve Jobs's fecal matter
if he made it all shiny and stuck the Apple logo on there

I guess it's just personal preferences because this thing can do everything I need or even want to do.

Not to mention the fact that you simply slide the unlock button and you're live and ready to go, instantly.

I'm not sure if you literally mean that or just have a figure of speech. If it's true, I know a cancer patient who could very much benefit from an up to date Mac. I think Apple may finally launch a product I will use.

I know many friends who use computers - but don't work online - who are just waiting to buy ipads...they are all excited about the ipad.

I don't understand the point of trying to argue what's wrong with the ipad - it's not like apple is going to change the design because someone posts a critical review on a forum. It's a product - buy....or don't buy.

I'll look at qualified reviews AFTER people have tried it out - and then decide when to buy it.

All valid points Allen, but nothing will stop me from getting one myself. I kind of love the design and think it will lend itself really well to working on the fly.

The one thing I don't appreciate is the lack of any USB connection port. How the heck can I run my 3G USB modem without having to buy a connector thingy which then lets me connect the iPad to my USB Internet device (or so I hope), and while I know the iPad supports WiFi I think WiFi sucks half of the time because it keeps losing its signal. I seriously think this missing attention to detail will be a huge negative - but what do I know - I simply speak from a consumer use point-of-view.

Monika, unfortunately I think your hopes will be dashed with regards to running a third party 3G USB modem on your iPad. Apple will most definitely not allow that, seeing that they also have a 3G (GSM) version of the iPad coming out in about 90 days that they want to charge $130 more for than the regular non-3G version. So if you're holding out hope for 3G on your iPad, you had better wait to buy the 3G version from Apple!

Hopefully they'll find enough people with a need or want for it, as I really don't see it fulfilling any essential duties for most people. Here's more clarification on the 3G versions and pricing -

Apple - iPad - Price starting at $499

            Hi Paulie,

I'll still buy one, even if I have to choke up more money to run my 3G. Perhaps it will run with my local 3G SIM (I don't see why not because they don't sell phone plans for the iPhoen either).

So what I'm thinking is even so my USB modem might not work on the device certainly my 3G SIM will - or do I have this wrong?

Either way, the iPad has got my name on it simply for the fact that it fits into the smallest rucksack for mobile work.

Leave it to Apple to confound even the most diehard fan, as it has been confirmed that the iPad will use the brand-new Micro SIM standard which not many carriers use at the moment. So while it's practically a given that your USB modem won't work on the iPad, you also have to consider the possibility that your local 3G SIM may not work either (unless your carrier is already using the new Micro SIM card).

This new Micro SIM card is approximately half the size of the regular SIM card, so there's no way you'll be able to use a conventional SIM card in the iPad. The SIM issue is explained in further detail here -

So what I'm thinking is even so my USB modem might not work on the device certainly my 3G SIM will - or do I have this wrong?

Either way, the iPad has got my name on it simply for the fact that it fits into the smallest rucksack for mobile work.

I got another take on that.

                Leave it to Apple to:

                • Create an entire new market segment.
                • Make an eBook feel like a REAL book, (unlike my Kindle).
                • Make eMail ACTUALLY look fun to go through
                • Possibly save MANY newspaper subscription services
                • Have 1,000s of programmers eager to create APPs for the iPad
                • Design a product that will bring "new" seniors to the internet
                • Have iPad displace several digital gadgets in the home
                • Have the planet abuzz with one introduction
                • Sell 10 MILLION units in year one
                • Expand their client base through the iPad

It's interesting to see how many people are making fun of this product, when at the very least you gotta admit these dudes that wear jeans at work, kinda know a thing or two about running a multi billion dollar company > which is about to change the industry, yet again.

Indeed, has anybody actually seen how the Ipad handles ebooks , turning pages alone is just pure WOW, apps allowing integration into the books, full colour video within books , I could go on.

Makes the Kindle look like a piece of second rate trash frankly.

It WAS obvious! I wanted something like the ipad is for quite a while. Of course, I would have added an SDHC connector and maybe a standard java library and install.

It's like an oversized iPod touch. Never the less, I will be getting one. I already own the iPhone and use it for reading eBooks sometimes. Even as an eBook reader people would pay the $500 because some of the high end readers are more than that. So you can look at it as an eBook reader with web browser and wifi. The could have marketed it in so many ways.

Forget marketing it though. It's already over saturated.

I see a lot of people comparing it to a notebook. It's not that. The iPad is more like a tablet PC. It's not designed to be used for word processing, marketing, or anything like that.

As for apps, it will be based on the same framework as the iPhone and iPod touch. Development will be exactly the same, except the developer gets a larger canvas to work on. Developers will jump on this because people will use the App store, so you can expect ALOT of apps for it.

                Hi Paulie,

Thank you for the insight into the SIM compatibility issue. I'm afraid my carrier certainly hasn't got these mini SIMs and if they did it would probably cost an arm and a leg to us end-consumers. I'm afraid Apple might have shot themselves in the foot because there is no good in having a 3G compatible device when there are no carriers supporting the hardware - unless they know something we don't.

We don't have AT&T here in Oz and I don't see Telstra (the biggest carrier) offering these new SIM cards because Apple chooses to launch a new device.

Makes you wonder what in the world is going on? While astronauts are able to tweet from the international space station in real time we have these mix-and-match combinations for consumers in the 21st century for getting online - not to mention the fact that we could theoretically go online in every corner of the world since technology seems to be capable of handling this.

                Ah shucks...

                  Hi Monika,

This looks pretty much like a deliberate move from Apple together with its de facto 3G provider (AT&T here in the US) to prevent iPad users from going to any other network providers for their 3G services. By that same token, I'd believe that they are in the process of securing agreements with specific 3G providers worldwide so that they can control exactly who dispenses 3G services to the iPad, and also have their finger in the pie as a result.

This does puzzle me, because they're essentially cutting off any sales of the 3G iPad from occurring until they secure agreements with the 3G providers worldwide who will be able to provide this micro SIM card. I do agree with you that they're shooting themselves in the foot, because if they had just made a simple change in the engineering of the iPad and perhaps came out with an 'universal' SIM slot that would accommodate both old and new SIM cards they'd have presented themselves with a much greater opportunity to sell the iPad 3G to the masses.

I'm device agnostic, and I don't like to think of myself as being in either the Apple or Windows camp. I think Apple makes fine Macbook laptops that perform really well and with the advent of virtualization software like Fusion and Parallels, has become viable for people even with lots of Windows software to use efficiently. However, I think the iPad is a half-baked piece of engineering that could have been refined much further than its present state.

Monika, you're absolutely right. It appears that they're looking for risk-inclined, early first adopters to test out the device as guinea pigs and help them figure out what the market really wants. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they released an iPad 2.0 within a few months sometime later this year...lol.

No doubt it'll be another Apple product that will sell, people just want 'em. Apple posted the highest earnings quarter on record which hits home that people can't get enough of their products.

I find the whole argument funny.

In reading the discussion on this by some techno-wizards I know, there was a ton of funny stuff being said. One guy even complained because it wasn't optimal for coding.

No camera? Cool. The thing I dislike most about my Mac, so far, is the presence of a built-in webcam. When I want to take pictures, I'll grab a camera. I don't need my laptop deciding that it wants to fire up a webcam without me making it happen.

No phone? So what? That's not what it's for. Anyone who's got the money for one of these ought to have a phone already.

This thing is built for the mass market, and it does what they'll want from it. When the geeks figure out how to jailbreak it, it'll do what they want it to, which is probably something Apple is counting on. They get those sales without having to provide the support.

Do you not see the advantage of being the provider to rebels? People can hate Apple, and buy their products just so they can spite them by doing things with them the products aren't supposed to do.

      THAT is smart marketing.

Apple has made their money by providing things people already want, and marketing them brilliantly. Neither they nor anyone else is going to have the perfect machine for any large group, but Apple comes close.

If it does what you want, buy it. If not, wait until someone figures out how to jailbreak it, or do without.

I have a friend who's absolutely fascinated by his Droid. I don't even know how to send a text message or use the camera in my phone. Everyone wants different things. Be happy about that, since that's what makes markets.

I have been wanting a laptop to be able to get work down while in bed or on the road, however the problem is how hot lap tops can sometimes get. A laptop? I'm sick of those also. Leg chapping junk with wires and no battery capacity.
Leg chapping? Are you trying to shave your thighs with it or something? I've never had those problems with my computer.

Wires? It's a laptop. They're wireless. Maybe you've been putting your desktop on your lap, which is why you're chapping.

No battery capacity? Yeah, because it can run more than one application at a time. It's an actual computer, not an overgrown iPod.

I wouldn't trade my laptop for that overpriced thing ever. If you want battery life, get a Netbook. At least a Netbook has a decent OS. I rarely ever use my laptop away from an outlet anyway.

And I hate not having flash on my iPhone; I'd hate it even more if my computer didn't have it. Thank god websites are starting to do mobile versions because so many of them are largely made up of Flash applications.

Flash? Well, flash may go away.
It may be used less like JAVA is now BUT flash will still be needed for sites that don't update.

I'd say that if Flash was gone today, people will still install it because of the sites that dont update. Game sites especially.

But if you think the lack of flash is going to stop the sales of this thing I would urge you to rethink that.

I'm amused by people saying it's just a crappy laptop.

    Really ?

Your laptop have the universally accepted premire touch sensative screen and min/max / scrolling controls to die for?

Your laptop have access in addition to general PC stuff to tens of thousands of uber cool custom made applications?

Your laptop look cool as hell - nah, don't kid yourself.

As for Flash, well the Ipod didn't have flash and somehow it seems to have just limped along. I'm sure like the Ipod key sites using flash such as Youtube.com etc will be fine.

As for the Kindle, personally I think it's so medicore, if they integrate the Ipad with an Intunes equivalent for books nicely so I can just download stuff via my LAN , sat on my sofa, it will do very nicely

Michael, if your primary purpose for the Kindle is to read, the e-ink screen on it beats any LCD screen on clarity (especially if you have lots of ambient light around you) and battery life, so there is no need to feel bad at all about getting it. I have handled the Kindle several times, and for reading actual full-length books, it has no equal. You could read the whole day on one and not experience any eyestrain issues.

I have handled the Kindle several times, and for reading actual full-length books, it has no equal. You could read the whole day on one and not experience any eyestrain issues.
Well I own the Kindle and will probably keep both. However, after seeing the video of eBook reader on the iPad, I can instantly recognize it as something I would appreciate more. It really LOOKS like a book. The Kindle reader is more like an etch-a-sketch, and the screen is all the Kindle will have going for it (even though it is only in B&W) once the iPad is released.

Furthermore, you cannot read typical PDF files on the Kindle. I tried downloading some already and was shocked to learn the "Kindle does not handle this type of software". Man, one of the reasons my wife got it for me was to read the slew of PDFs I have on my computer. Not only will the iPad be able to download and read PDFs but it will open up an entirely new market for eBook producers (us) to directly submit and sell via the iBook Store. Think about that, a mere 10 MILLION new units to market YOUR eBook to!

Add that to the (seemingly dated) square button toggle navigation, the real buttons (that wear) next-page navigation, and the convoluted home page and setting navigation you can see why Amazon is in panic mode right now about the iPad.

Keep in mind Apple will be making deals with any kind of book publisher, so there will be no limitations as to what gets sold through the iBook store. If you have shopped Amazon through the Kindle store, you know already that there are nowhere near the amount of books sold there as in the general Amazon website.

Don't let Paulie's slamming of Apple delude you. The iPad will be big, and if you have never created an eBook before, this is the time to start producing in full colour, because there will be an entire new market for such products coming soon.

Download the MobiPocket Creator and you can convert PDF's for use on the Kindle.

Quite frankly, I don't see why having an iPad is better than having an iPhone? I can carry an iPhone in my pocket and it does just as much, if not more, than an iPad does.

I see the potential with the technology, but I think this version falls short.

No multi-tasking, no video camera, no USB port, no wireless syncing...really?

          So what is it exactly?

Notebooks and Netbooks can run apps, it's called software...an "app" is just a fancy name for that.

At $499 I can see the value, but not at any higher...not with those features.

Marty, while the iPad may be more colorful, I think you're missing the point of an ebook reader. When you read outdoors or anywhere there is a significant amount of ambient light, the iPad is going to turn into a glossy mirror with its reflective screen, making that gorgeous color screen you're talking about very hard to read. The same phenomenon occurs with Macbooks - they have very nice screens to behold, BUT when you step outdoors or you have a fairly strong light source behind the screen you end up with distracting reflections and glare that are a perfect recipe for eyestrain! This is where an e-ink display like the Kindle excels, and this is the typical usage scenario for one - after all, you don't just read a regular book in only controlled lighting conditions, do you?

Also, it sounds like you have Kindle 1 (the original). Kindle 2 has built in native PDF support, without having to do any conversion or anything of the sort. More information can be found here -
          Amazon.com Help: Kindle Software Updates

I myself am waiting for the Barnes&Noble Nook, which is sold out until sometime in February. The PDF support on the Kindle 2 was in response to the Nook's advanced features (built-in PDF support was one of them), though I still think the Nook wins out because it runs the Android operating system and has intuitive capacitive multitouch screen control, in addition to expandable memory support via SD cards.

Not sure how I could be missing the point of an eBook reader when I own one. However the Kindle screen is great for outdoors, no question. That, however is now falling to a VERY slim and select advantage to the features of the iPad and AMAZON knows it. It will be interesting to see how they play catch up.

BTW, mine is brand new having rec'd as a gift at Xmas, and no it does not support the PDF's I tried to install on it - mine is Canadian version though. The message I get on my Kindle is this:

This PDF cannot be supported due to features not yet available on the Kindle.

When I contacted AMAZON about it, they referred to my PDF having a password protecting it's access. Can you imagine they haven't yet designed software for the Kindle that lets you put in a password to read a PDF that you bought?

Actually, it is not NEARLY as simple as you might think. If they did that, they COULD land in jail like dmitry! Dmitry Sklyarov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So Apple probably needs a special license or maybe even a special version from adobe!

On July 16, 2001, due to a complaint from Adobe Systems, a US company, that copy protection arrangements in its e-book file format were being violated by ElcomSoft's product, Sklyarov was arrested after giving a presentation called "eBook's Security - Theory and Practice" at the DEF CON convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was charged with distributing a product designed to circumvent copyright protection measures, under the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and arrested by the FBI as he was about to return to Moscow.

You're welcome, Michael. I was about to buy the Kindle until I heard rumblings about the B&N Nook, which possesses several compelling features I'd want (can you say Android?), so I'm waiting until it becomes available sometime in February. My purpose for my Nook will be the same as yours - reading lots and lots of PDFs stockpiled on my computer when I'm away from it, and also another GREAT fringe benefit is that you get to borrow all the Adobe books you want (in regular PDF and EPUB format) from your friendly local public library.

    Allen(AKA Admin),

I LOVE it! Your take on this is IDENTICAL to mine! I think most just look at it from the wrong side. It is like looking at a netbook and saying IT'S NO GOOD, it doesn't have 4 bays for disk drives, and can't be worn like a watch.

All VALID complaints, except it would destroy the beauty of it, and limit it's function.

Want a SMALL ebook reader that has a phone? Use an iphone, BB, or almost any other smart phone. The fact is that they are limited because they are SMALL!

I don't really think it matters if it's good or bad...It's apple and Steve Jobs is the master of launching a new product.

I have the Phone, I have the touch, so I'll be getting the Pad just to complete the collection.

I agree with the op in that the Pad shouldn't have a phone. But I think the question is not about actually CALLING people with it. I think the question is internet access. Without a 'phone' inside of the product, how will we be able to have access to the internet? I guess it will be WiFi only which means it's basically a Touch just a little bigger.

    Allen,

Cool read - so easy to read and to the point. Personally, I used to buy just about everything and then some, but these days I wait until things like this are available for a lease contract with a upgrade policy. When the newer models come out I upgrade - until I am completely satisfied with all-that-it-can-be and.. buy it.

......And I'll eat my words if it's not a flop. I think it will initially sell well and it's first production run might even sell out, but I don't see it selling like gangbusters, especially in the long haul. I think the excitement will last a few months and then the market is going to realize there really isn't any viable need for such a device, at least not yet in it's current form.

We do a lot of different things here at the office and virtually as well, and none of us see any compelling reasons to buy an iPad. Our smart phones and laptops are doing just fine without it. Though I agree, it doesn't need a camera or a phone, it doesn't need that functionality. Only time will tell. I'll be keeping a close eye on this puppy.

When you read a novel, is it in color? nope. iPad will be good for some that need a "tweener": not quite a laptop but not a desktop either. It's will not kill e-readers as some of us like a dedicated device to do one specific thing. Multitasking is counterproductive in most cases. "focus on your one purpose" is correct and as we get more and more interconnected, ADD will become a way of life. But that is a rant for another thread.

    Ok, back to my Kindle.

When you read a newspaper, magazine, eBook, or instructional/technical books with graphics would you prefer color? Of course.

Also, I think the newspaper industry may have actually found themselves a savior in this product because of the ease of subscribing and delivering full featured, full color, interactive publications reliably and in an environmentally friendly and more cost effective manner.

These iPad threads never cease to be entertaining. Apparently, the iPad is no good because it can't do more than one thing at a time and it's also no good because it can do more than one thing.

As an aside on this: Apple's publicity department has some serious clout - and this product is dominating the media because of them. A worthwhile study for serious marketers might be to examine this campaign as far as possible and learn how Apple manages to create such a media storm. Try googling ipad "press release". 264,000 results already - amazing - and tons of scope for resources you can use to promote your own products.
Also, https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com is showing me that apple.com/ipad has 23,657 inbound links already, including some major homepages. You ever see a mobile device get this much traction?

Check out software called Sigil and Calibre. You can convert your pdf (with Sigil you can edit the file) and in most cases it will be much easier to read as you can then resize the text. If you put the pdf straight to the Kindle it actually turns it into an image, and thus no text scaling. But with Calibre and Sigil, anything you want on there, you can get on there. And both are free.

NOTE: Apologies, I had forgotten that iPad doesn't do multitasking, however in general if we would focus more on one task at a time and "git r done" rather than doing bits here and there, we'd find ourselves much happier.

      Why do I want one?

      * 10 Hour Battery Life
      * Keyboard not there unless I need it
      * No Mouse
      * No wires
      * No little box they call a 'touchpad'
      * I LIKE the apps that are available and the two touch buy and install
      * It does every single thing I need or want
      * It's kind of like a book and I love books
      * I like the case/holder that comes with it
      * I can attach a real keyboard if I want to
      * I can move anywhere without thinking about a mouse and wires and low battery

      * I just sent Paul Myers a text using the Itouch, will be able to do the same with the Ipad..unlimited free ones (not a huge plus but still cool)

      * I wanted the itouch to be much bigger - now it is

      * Netbooks require you to sit it somewhere. Not nearly as "hands" friendly as the ipad will be. Netbooks fold and half the space or more is a keyboard.

      Hmm..I could keep going :-)

The ipad is inline with old prices, and what many are willing to pay. The tablet you showed would be so expensive that it may not even sell to 30% of the potential buyers of the ipad.

Sometimes $1 can make a BIG difference. $400+ even MORE so.

Dont know what you looked at but the iPAD with 3g will cost roughly $750 for the 32gb of storage model. That makes the Viliv about $150 more but it will run flash and anything else XP will (within the specs), has HDMI out, will use standard 3g sims so you arent limited to ATT (for now anyway), has a webcam, built-in GPS and more.

When you consider what it does have, the extra $150ish is nothing for people who want a tablet that isnt limited.

I saw conflicting reports. As I recall, the consensus seemed to be about $400 for the 16GB version. I agree that $150 more, IF it is at the $600+ mark, makes the viliv more attractive. As I said, I considered buying it, and that was some time ago. I felt I ***HAD*** to get a new computer, and I settled for an hdd based netbook.

The $400 is w/out 3G access. Add an extra $130 for that. The prices I used was w/ the 32gb + 3g models.

There is a 10 inch convertible netbook from Viliv (the S10) coming out soon, with 32-128GB SSD drives. It'll be priced around the same level as the iPad. Here's a preview - Viliv S10 Promises Win 7 Touch, 10 Hours of Endurance

You're forgetting that Amazon has a lot of clout. They just dropped ALL Macmillan ebooks from their Kindle store because these whiny publishers wanted to raise their ebook prices to projected iPad levels ($12.99-$14.99), and Amazon is trying to keep all their ebooks to $9.99 or less (they have done this from the very start).

@seasoned - you might want to wait for this upcoming Viliv S10. It has a 10" screen with extremely high resolution (1366X768), AND it only uses SSD drives (no spinning hard drives here!) It will apparently start at $570, which I think makes it a really great deal!

Steve, just something to keep in mind for your next computer. I feel like it has the best of both worlds by combining tablet functionality with a keyboard when you need it, and with a full array of USB and other ports connectivity is not going to be an issue either.

After watching the vid on Allen's link, my jaw dropped. They said they will be pricing it at $500 price range..That's great, with 10 hours of battery life, you could literally work where ever. Perfect for those who already do IM full time. Now you can get out more, work on the beach or anywhere.

I know laptops can do that, but with the 10 hours battery life, it definitely will be attractive.

Hope I can get one by the end of the month, I haven't checked yet if it will be available
here in my country, and if the price will not stray too far from the original price in the
    states.

All-in-all, I can say that the product is indeed great.

Not sure what to make of this

I've been a Mac user for 10 years now...

I like the operating system above anything else because it's
stable, no crashes, almost no viruses etc...

But I have lots of apps that will probably not run on this iPad thing...

    How about:

    - Firefox?
    - Skype calls + video?
    - Pages/OpenOffice/Word...?

    Know what I mean?

All of the above are things I would
love to be able to use when NOT sitting at my desk working.

These would be perfect for the iPad... same as
having a webcam and a mic like you do on your laptop...
...I don't use my laptop to make phone calls, BUT
I often use it for video chats with friends etc and it bothers me
that I always have to sit on my desk to do that.

Then I have a lot of handy plugins on my Firefox,
but am not sure this thing will run Firefox... So, it will be a hassle
when I browse and find something interesting to then have to transfer it
over to my Mac and then over to Firefox again.

    Things like that...

Just seems not ready yet. But it will sell like hotcake.

And... I am sure it will work great for
watching films in bed and reading...

        webcams add weight, size, etc.
Sadly, MOST such products don't have a removable battery
It could be argued that the average netbook has NO storage, and CERTAINLY not for the $250 price. The ipad uses SSD. SSD iss FAR better for true portables than hard disks.

  • I know I might be the only one, and probably I am missing the point altogether, but I just dont see the point in this device: leaving the "cool factor" outside, why is this better than the standard netbooks? I mean, netbooks are productivity devices while on the move (you can do some mild Dreamweaver+Photoshop web building, you do FTP'ing, you can use the software you use at home while away, etc). This iPad seems like a mobility multimedia device but I see no productivity being done on it other than email... and, if all we want is to read emails, surf the net, watch videos and share photos, what's wrong with the existing netbooks?

I am personally looking at this UMID M2 for my mobile productivity needs: Intel Athom processor, Windows XP enviroment, thumb keyboard, touch screen and it's the size of an iPhone (fits on your jacket pocket).

Honestly, I dont get it: other than the cool factor how's the iPad useful at all?

The ipad is more hype and why shouldn't it be. Every product launch of theirs is huge and they sure do know how to market their product. People will buy this product just to have it even though it is not that great. The next few months will be key as more and more reviews start to come out.

Seems there is too many people who focus on what things don't do or don't have instead of on what they do. (hopefully not a common theme in their life)

The ipad isn't going to be a "netbook". Wasn't supposed to be and never will be. (one would hope)

And a "netbook" should not try to be an ipad. Take the piece of junk called Asus T91MT as a prime example. I bought it to test it out and this thing can't even remotely compare to the little Ipod Touch. It's complete junk that should have been left as a netbook and nothing more. It's slow, jerky and it takes forever to do virtually anything.

Surf, post, check email, transfer money..etc, all with absolute touch precision and almost zero delays. And all on a thin slate that lasts for 10 hours. That's what I see in the ipad. There's other things but those are all I care about.

It's would be perfectly fine with me if they kept the ipad exactly like a Touch, just bigger. I already like everything the touch can do but because of its size it remains little more than an amusement.

It's this simple and nothing more, if an ipad doesn't do what you need or want then don't bother with it. Some people sound like Apple came to their home and pissed in their cereal. :-)

      Hi Shane,

I have one but don't use it. I did decide to keep it to keep backups of the touch and ipads. Itunes always seems to have drivers or something getting deleted on my PC's and I've never figured out what is causing it. Doesn't happen on the Mac.

Something that a lot of people seem to overlook is that this is probably the beginning, not the end, of the product line.

Macs started with 128k RAM and a dinky little black & white screen. Adobe and Aldus made apps that surprised Apple, invented the industry of desktop publishing, and saved the company. Today's entry level models start with 4,000 times the memory. Too bad for Adobe to have got in on the ground floor, right?

In less than a decade, the iPod gained twelve times the storage capacity of the original model. In three years, the iPhone gained location awareness and video recording, among other features.

Apple has a pretty darn good track record of making updated models.

So the developers and content creators who get the miserably inadequate first-generation iPad will already have a huge head start, once the "got it right" upgrade finally arrives.

Meanwhile, Neilsen claims that 40% of iPhone owners make over $100,000 a year. How many of them will be wiling to browse the Internet and buy content, applications, and upgrades offered through the first informative, authoritative web site they find?

Nah, what would Allen know about how to recognize a great opportunity for Internet marketers? We'd better wait until Apple gets their act together with multitasking, a card reader, and releases any control over random open source apps on the platform. It's not like there's any money in this for anyone until that wish list checklist is all complete, is there?

      Hey, I appreciate your enthusiasm.

People are not over looking it because most people are talking about what it is now and what features it has now, not what it's going to become. That's not what people are disagreeing on. Most people are bringing up features it has, doesn't have, comparing it to other tablets / notebooks / etc. Talking about what's it's going to become would have to be a whole new thread.

I hate to admit this but I was using my iPhone a lot today and actually caught myself thinking "if only the screen was bigger..."......doh! But I'm still not buying an iPad......

Yes, I'm aware of that, but that's not the point I'm debating. You stated that "a lot of people" were over looking what the product is going to become, I was addressing that. While some people have brought up what it might become the vast majority of the posts are talking about what the iPad has now (or what it doesn't have). Some are agreeing with the OP while others are not. That's all I was getting at.

Fair enough. As someone who does remember using that original 128k Mac, I happen to think that Allen's right on target. Marketers might find iPad a delightful tool for their own use, and even if they don't, they might find iPad enthusiasts a terrific marketplace that's eager to buy online. But the winning offers will show a true understanding of the buyers' own goals and interests, rather than someone else's technical checklist.

Rod, you hit the nail on the head there. The first generation iPad is incomplete and lacks many essential features that the majority of people would not consider optional, though it'll sell well to the Apple fanboys and rabid enthusiasts with money burning a hole in their pockets. This is not aimed at the average Joe, at least not in its present incarnation.

The whole device is optional. How can any single feature be "essential?"

I could go along with 'convenient,' 'desired,' 'expected,' 'useful' and a lot of other words. But essential? Nah.

But then, I'm sort of a luddite. I chased around looking for a laptop that didn't have a webcam standard, and would cheerfully rip the built-in mic from the thing. Windows is too insecure for that sort of stuff to be available if it's going to be remotely triggerable. I'm not all that sure I want it on a Mac, either.

Well, one could argue that web browsing and email capabilities would be 'expected' and 'needed', otherwise you'd end up with an overgrown regular iPod, which would be pretty pointless in anyone's book. I think the killer capability here is something that resembles full-fledged web browsing in a portable and convenient form factor.

Your luddite views are most definitely contrary to the rest of the populace's. One of the most requested/desired capabilities of the iPad (which it doesn't have) is the ability to chat via webcam over the internet, and it really would be a simple matter to insert a tiny $10 or less camera component in there that wouldn't detract from its aesthetics or form. Conspiracy theories are raging all over the internet over that tiny little webcam, or rather the lack of it.

When the mac started, I thought it was a TOTAL JOKE! I saw a prototype for the new computer, and it was BEAUTIFUL! A bit larger, physically, than the Apple II, it looked a little like the apple II, but a LOT nicer, had a FULL numeric pad, LOTS of slots, LOTS of memory, etc... And it probably would have cost LESS than the mac they came out with. They did almost EVERYTHING wrong with the mac. It had a network, as I recall, a bit more memory, a better processor, and better software, but THAT WAS IT!!!!
Somehow, they pulled it off! In the scheme of things though, the mac really WAS a JOKE! Bear in mind that I am talking about the first 3-4 models after LISA, and LISA was WORSE! EXPENSIVE, etc....

I told you how I felt/feel about Jobs. Well, I LIKE wozniak. He and I are similar in a lot of ways. And some may see my attitude as very different, but I used to be more like him in THAT respect. It turns out Steve WOZNIAK has a lot of toyotas, and was misquoted, so he was on CNN today. He had a problem with HIS prius that he thinks is a software problem. Anyway, they asked HIM about the ipad! He responded similarly to how I would. So what did he say? Paraphrased....

Well, I am a bit technical, and want it to have more functionality. But THEN I thought about all the schools I have helped, and the people that I have talked to that couldn't afford a mac, but wanted them, and could use a simi=plified interface for browinsg the internet and reading books, and I thought WOW, this would be perfect for them.

So HE realizes that there are problems, and it is limited, but it has a market.

Don't suppose you have any stock market tips, do you Allen...?
Don't forget that the iPad is not the only game in town. With a whole slew of Android tablets and the Blackberry Playbook on the horizon that do more, have true multi-tasking and act just like mini-notebooks in terms of functionality, you'll see tablets start to truly replace notebooks for some people. There will be more and more people who supplant their notebooks with these sophisticated tablets for work away from the home, and use them in conjunction with home desktops.

In terms of mobility and independence from a power cord, these upcoming tablets fit the bill, and the only remaining factors in question are their performance and software that they can run, and I feel that they'll rapidly close the gap in these areas with basic laptops (which have more than enough capability for the majority of normal users).

The Ipad is the old man's of lady's iphone. I truly could not justify buying an iphone. In Texas my sister stood in line for hours to get hers. I did not see the logic. But the IPAD for $500 is a treasure. go to the Apple store and just touch it. It is a perfect teaching tool. Schools will eat this thing up

Again in the South the 7th graders get laptops (in this specific school) these laptops run $900+ even with a discount. The IPAD is going to sell out. People don't see the big picture. Everything Apple is elegant, simple easy to use that is why it sells.

If Apple don't want to include a camera in
    their latest tech, well... so?

It's their tech, and they can do what they
please with it. If someone chooses not to
buy it because they disagree... erm... fine.

But what's with the hate? Get real folks.

Apple make their own hardware, software
the lot. That gives them free reign to do
as they please, and that is kinda the point
    when you go that route...

This thread is oozing with maturity...

I believe that the same was said about the iPod when it came out. While I don't see a purpose in my life for the iPad, I'm sure that some will and I'm sure Steve Jobs has a vision past what is portrayed here.

One thing you have to appreciate, especially from this group, is the marketing efforts of Apple.

I'm fed up with all my idiot friends on facebook swooning over this piece of junk. Now my Samsung netbook, that is a classy piece of technology and my new girlfriend loved it.

I do admire Apple's marketing machine though, I guess they can sell idiots anything with an "i" prefix.

Ipad will be just fine. Just give it some time and if there are any kinks, they will fix it and people will flock to it over and over.

I think people want the latest and greatest thing to hit the market these days and it almost becomes like a fad where you have to have it. Think of it like this years christmas toy - zhu zhu pets. Have you seen these things? They cost $10 at stores and they were going for $150 on ebay.

Point being, yes this is new and people want it. Will it sustain its popularity. Only time will tell but with all the products that have come out before hand, I think the ipad will do just fine...

  • Quite frankly, I still dont see the point of the iPad other than surfing the net off your couch. But, if that's all you want, what's wrong with a cheap 10" netbook or even the 11" Macbook Air?

Well wont be long and the new android software for tablets will be out then we will see how good the ipad is.

Ipad is a great piece of kit however just like android phones are starting to take over, in fact this month they equaled Iphone, I think you will see android tablets flooding the market.

Flash no problems, apps you can built easier and in general lot better for marketers.

Allen then you will have choice. I agree with nearly everything you say but I would go android.

Hi, My comment would be that maybe the people who criticize the IPAD cant keep up with the technology!
Being a bit more in the mature years struggle to keep up with things certainly.

Do you get used to typing on a virtual keyboard? I can't imagine it, doing any serious work on something like that doesn't seem as easy as on a real keyboard. Am I not understanding something, or is it one of those things that you get used to when you do it enough?

I know a woman who has one. She says it's just a toy and she doesn't ever get anything done on it except for reading on airplanes. I suppose it also helps a lot if you have more money than you know what to do with.

I was sitting behind someone on a plane with one. He was doing a crossword puzzle. The top word on the left was mom, and he had also solved the top word on the right, dad. I've never done a crossword puzzle in my life, but maybe someday if I'm bored, lonely, and have absolutely nothing better to do... Naw, forget it, it's not going to happen.

I can type faster on my ipad than i can on my laptop.

Personally i think the Ipad is awesome. Its got a wordpress app so you can setup blogs , Jenga HD for some family time (Lol).

I got the old ipad just before the release because i have the new ipod touch so i didnt need a camera. But its a good buy none the less.
