It could do speaker phone and webcam.. but that's not what it was intended to do and future versions might.

I think it looks cool. There will always be those who don't want/need one and to me the device is not a necessity, only a cool device to have. In this economy it's amazing if they can sell it. they'll have to price it down.. but Apple can sell anything now..

Let me start by saying I don't use Apple products, so this scathing pre-review is likely biased.

Here's what I see as its biggest problem...

It's too dang shiny! Yep, with how much I'd use it, it would take a lot of time just to keep it clean. And, no, I'm not going to stop eating Cheetos.

So, Apple can keep their sleek, shiny, ultra-cool looking, groundbreaking, new-fangled gizmo; and I'll be content to vacuum orange-colored crumbs out of my laptop keyboard from time to time.

Here's what gets me. Apple loves to cripple its devices intentionally, and here's solid evidence of this - the hacker community has developed a hacked "jailbreak" version of the iPod Touch and iPhone that has been able to multitask for a while now, and my guess is that it won't be long before they come out with a "jailbreak" version for the latest iPhone OS 3.2 (which is what the iPad will run when it comes out). Just google "iphone jailbreak video", poke around, and you will be able to catch some GLORIOUS videos of the iPhone multitasking...to me that is absolutely damning evidence of Apple intentionally limiting its hardware from doing things that people want it to do! It is quite obvious that the functionality is there, and the hacked "jailbreak" version just unlocks this functionality that was there all along.

Apple's a major contributor to the HTML 5 effort, which is supposed to provide a new industry-standard way to run video inside web pages.

My guess is that Apple hopes by the time the iPad is shipped, they'll have an official HTML 5 spec finished. Then the iPad will be the ultimate place to run browser-based video that doesn't require anything from Adobe. Next stop, HTML 5 in Safari, even on Windows.

This would give Apple a great story for developers and users alike about how iPad apps and content can be used on Macs and PC's... but of course if you want to carry it around in the ultimate mobile multitouch device, guess who's got the only game in town? (Same thing as iTunes and iPod.)

My next guess is that inside Apple's labs, Flash runs perfectly on the iPad. That's plan B in case HTML 5 can't get far enough along by release date. Just before release to manufacturing, someone will flip a switch for which video tech gets compiled into the first Pads for sale. Same thought process as their having had MacOS on Intel for years before the official changeover.

You were probably their ideal target customer. If they can get Allen to buy it, he'll be happy and 100,000 Warriors will have to get one too and make content for it.

phone are b/c (from what I know about it) it's a
watered down version of everything.

If all it does is as far as applications and software
is run apps similar to the iPod/iPhone apps, then it's
not as useful as a laptop.

If it doesn't make calls, then it's not as useful as the iPhone...

All valid points Allen, but nothing will stop me from getting one myself. I kind of love the design and think it will lend itself really well to working on the fly.

The one thing I don't appreciate is the lack of any USB connection port. How the heck can I run my 3G USB modem without having to buy a connector thingy which then lets me connect the iPad to my USB Internet device (or so I hope), and while I know the iPad supports WiFi I think WiFi sucks half of the time because it keeps losing its signal. I seriously think this missing attention to detail will be a huge negative - but what do I know - I simply speak from a consumer use point-of-view.

Honestly I agree with this post 100% I will definitely be getting an Ipad. I have been wanting a laptop to be able to get work down while in bed or on the road, however the problem is how hot lap tops can sometimes get. The ipad seems like the perfect answer and I actually really excited about it once I have the money.

iPAD... hmm... this is new to me... making a note of it in my notepad. Darn it, my pen's out of ink again. Ugh...

Wires? It's a laptop. They're wireless. Maybe you've been putting your desktop on your lap, which is why you're chapping.

No battery capacity? Yeah, because it can run more than one application at a time. It's an actual computer, not an overgrown iPod.

I wouldn't trade my laptop for that overpriced thing ever. If you want battery life, get a Netbook. At least a Netbook has a decent OS. I rarely ever use my laptop away from an outlet anyway.

And I hate not having flash on my iPhone; I'd hate it even more if my computer didn't have it. Thank god websites are starting to do mobile versions because so many of them are largely made up of Flash applications.

And you wont be able to video confrrence. Since its for the net, thats a biggie.
It may be used less like JAVA is now BUT flash will still be needed for sites that don't update.

I'd say that if Flash was gone today, people will still install it because of the sites that dont update. Game sites especially.

I'm not an Apple fan... Rarely using the Mac... and The MacBook Pro is only occasionally. The iPhone was discarded as I reverted back to a trusty BlackBerry...

But the Pad looks different.. I think I'm actually gonna enjoy the new Apple direction with this.

As for Flash, well the Ipod didn't have flash and somehow it seems to have just limped along. I'm sure like the Ipod key sites using flash such as Youtube.com etc will be fine.

As for the Kindle, personally I think it's so medicore, if they integrate the Ipad with an Intunes equivalent for books nicely so I can just download stuff via my LAN , sat on my sofa, it will do very nicely

Yea... well I'm kicking myself square in the ass for paying $500 bucks for a Kindle DX last year. It looks like I could of had an iPad for that price.

Oh well... I'm going to grasp onto "the Kindle screen is easier to read" argument and try to get me at least another 6 months of happiness out of it before I lay down another 5 big ones for another gadget.

Thanks Paulie... I was really only looking for a PDF reader when I bought it. I have a Blackberry that gets me my email just fine... I can also browse the net with it, but that feature isn't so great... So I guess I shouln't complain... thanks for restoring my faith.

I LOVE it! Your take on this is IDENTICAL to mine! I think most just look at it from the wrong side. It is like looking at a netbook and saying IT'S NO GOOD, it doesn't have 4 bays for disk drives, and can't be worn like a watch.

All VALID complaints, except it would destroy the beauty of it, and limit it's function.

Want a SMALL ebook reader that has a phone? Use an iphone, BB, or almost any other smart phone. The fact is that they are limited because they are SMALL!

I don't really think it matters if it's good or bad...It's apple and Steve Jobs is the master of launching a new product.

I have the Phone, I have the touch, so I'll be getting the Pad just to complete the collection.

I agree with the op in that the Pad shouldn't have a phone. But I think the question is not about actually CALLING people with it. I think the question is internet access. Without a 'phone' inside of the product, how will we be able to have access to the internet? I guess it will be WiFi only which means it's basically a Touch just a little bigger.

Cool read - so easy to read and to the point. Personally, I used to buy just about everything and then some, but these days I wait until things like this are available for a lease contract with a upgrade policy. When the newer models come out I upgrade - until I am completely satisfied with all-that-it-can-be and.. buy it.

......And I'll eat my words if it's not a flop. I think it will initially sell well and it's first production run might even sell out, but I don't see it selling like gangbusters, especially in the long haul. I think the excitement will last a few months and then the market is going to realize there really isn't any viable need for such a device, at least not yet in it's current form.

We do a lot of different things here at the office and virtually as well, and none of us see any compelling reasons to buy an iPad. Our smart phones and laptops are doing just fine without it. Though I agree, it doesn't need a camera or a phone, it doesn't need that functionality. Only time will tell. I'll be keeping a close eye on this puppy.

When you read a novel, is it in color? nope. iPad will be good for some that need a "tweener": not quite a laptop but not a desktop either. It's will not kill e-readers as some of us like a dedicated device to do one specific thing. Multitasking is counterproductive in most cases. "focus on your one purpose" is correct and as we get more and more interconnected, ADD will become a way of life. But that is a rant for another thread.

As an aside on this: Apple's publicity department has some serious clout - and this product is dominating the media because of them. A worthwhile study for serious marketers might be to examine this campaign as far as possible and learn how Apple manages to create such a media storm. Try googling ipad "press release". 264,000 results already - amazing - and tons of scope for resources you can use to promote your own products.
Also, https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com is showing me that apple.com/ipad has 23,657 inbound links already, including some major homepages. You ever see a mobile device get this much traction?
Oh yeah, and if you need it to do phone, install skype...

Check out software called Sigil and Calibre. You can convert your pdf (with Sigil you can edit the file) and in most cases it will be much easier to read as you can then resize the text. If you put the pdf straight to the Kindle it actually turns it into an image, and thus no text scaling. But with Calibre and Sigil, anything you want on there, you can get on there. And both are free.

NOTE: Apologies, I had forgotten that iPad doesn't do multitasking, however in general if we would focus more on one task at a time and "git r done" rather than doing bits here and there, we'd find ourselves much happier.

Apple is like that. The ipad isn't out yet, but surely Apple has blown it this time. I have a Fujitsu laptop/tablet now and it weighs over 5 lbs. Please send me any ipads you don't want.

Why you would want one I have no idea.

A netbook is smaller, has similar batter life (a bit less I'll admit) and can do so much more.

The missing camera isn't an issue if they are just used for taking photos.

But what about for webcam?

If I was getting a tablet, it would be this one . Beter than iPAD.

I agree with the thought that iPad is going to sell like gangbusters. I registered 20 highly targeted SEO domains and have put them on Flippa for sale. I have gotten several PM about my reserve so I know people are interested.

@seasoned - you might want to wait for this upcoming Viliv S10. It has a 10" screen with extremely high resolution (1366X768), AND it only uses SSD drives (no spinning hard drives here!) It will apparently start at $570, which I think makes it a really great deal!

Steve, just something to keep in mind for your next computer. I feel like it has the best of both worlds by combining tablet functionality with a keyboard when you need it, and with a full array of USB and other ports connectivity is not going to be an issue either.

After watching the vid on Allen's link, my jaw dropped. They said they will be pricing it at $500 price range..That's great, with 10 hours of battery life, you could literally work where ever. Perfect for those who already do IM full time. Now you can get out more, work on the beach or anywhere.

I know laptops can do that, but with the 10 hours battery life, it definitely will be attractive.

Hope I can get one by the end of the month, I haven't checked yet if it will be available
here in my country, and if the price will not stray too far from the original price in the
states.

All-in-all, I can say that the product is indeed great.

I've been a Mac user for 10 years now...

I like the operating system above anything else because it's
stable, no crashes, almost no viruses etc...

But I have lots of apps that will probably not run on this iPad thing...

How about:

- Firefox?
- Skype calls + video?
- Pages/OpenOffice/Word...?

Know what I mean?

All of the above are things I would
love to be able to use when NOT sitting at my desk working.

These would be perfect for the iPad... same as
having a webcam and a mic like you do on your laptop...
...I don't use my laptop to make phone calls, BUT
I often use it for video chats with friends etc and it bothers me
that I always have to sit on my desk to do that.

Then I have a lot of handy plugins on my Firefox,
but am not sure this thing will run Firefox... So, it will be a hassle
when I browse and find something interesting to then have to transfer it
over to my Mac and then over to Firefox again.

Things like that...

Just seems not ready yet. But it will sell like hotcake.

And... I am sure it will work great for
watching films in bed and reading...

I know I might be the only one, and probably I am missing the point altogether, but I just dont see the point in this device: leaving the "cool factor" outside, why is this better than the standard netbooks? I mean, netbooks are productivity devices while on the move (you can do some mild Dreamweaver+Photoshop web building, you do FTP'ing, you can use the software you use at home while away, etc). This iPad seems like a mobility multimedia device but I see no productivity being done on it other than email... and, if all we want is to read emails, surf the net, watch videos and share photos, what's wrong with the existing netbooks?

I am personally looking at this UMID M2 for my mobile productivity needs: Intel Athom processor, Windows XP enviroment, thumb keyboard, touch screen and it's the size of an iPhone (fits on your jacket pocket).

The ipad is more hype and why shouldn't it be. Every product launch of theirs is huge and they sure do know how to market their product. People will buy this product just to have it even though it is not that great. The next few months will be key as more and more reviews start to come out.

Seems there is too many people who focus on what things don't do or don't have instead of on what they do. (hopefully not a common theme in their life)

The ipad isn't going to be a "netbook". Wasn't supposed to be and never will be. (one would hope)

And a "netbook" should not try to be an ipad. Take the piece of junk called Asus T91MT as a prime example. I bought it to test it out and this thing can't even remotely compare to the little Ipod Touch. It's complete junk that should have been left as a netbook and nothing more. It's slow, jerky and it takes forever to do virtually anything.

Surf, post, check email, transfer money..etc, all with absolute touch precision and almost zero delays. And all on a thin slate that lasts for 10 hours. That's what I see in the ipad. There's other things but those are all I care about.

It's would be perfectly fine with me if they kept the ipad exactly like a Touch, just bigger. I already like everything the touch can do but because of its size it remains little more than an amusement.

It's this simple and nothing more, if an ipad doesn't do what you need or want then don't bother with it. Some people sound like Apple came to their home and pissed in their cereal. :-)

Something that a lot of people seem to overlook is that this is probably the beginning, not the end, of the product line.

Macs started with 128k RAM and a dinky little black & white screen. Adobe and Aldus made apps that surprised Apple, invented the industry of desktop publishing, and saved the company. Today's entry level models start with 4,000 times the memory. Too bad for Adobe to have got in on the ground floor, right?

In less than a decade, the iPod gained twelve times the storage capacity of the original model. In three years, the iPhone gained location awareness and video recording, among other features.

Apple has a pretty darn good track record of making updated models.

So the developers and content creators who get the miserably inadequate first-generation iPad will already have a huge head start, once the "got it right" upgrade finally arrives.

Meanwhile, Neilsen claims that 40% of iPhone owners make over $100,000 a year. How many of them will be wiling to browse the Internet and buy content, applications, and upgrades offered through the first informative, authoritative web site they find?

Nah, what would Allen know about how to recognize a great opportunity for Internet marketers? We'd better wait until Apple gets their act together with multitasking, a card reader, and releases any control over random open source apps on the platform. It's not like there's any money in this for anyone until that wish list checklist is all complete, is there?

When the mac started, I thought it was a TOTAL JOKE! I saw a prototype for the new computer, and it was BEAUTIFUL! A bit larger, physically, than the Apple II, it looked a little like the apple II, but a LOT nicer, had a FULL numeric pad, LOTS of slots, LOTS of memory, etc... And it probably would have cost LESS than the mac they came out with. They did almost EVERYTHING wrong with the mac. It had a network, as I recall, a bit more memory, a better processor, and better software, but THAT WAS IT!!!!
Somehow, they pulled it off! In the scheme of things though, the mac really WAS a JOKE! Bear in mind that I am talking about the first 3-4 models after LISA, and LISA was WORSE! EXPENSIVE, etc....

I told you how I felt/feel about Jobs. Well, I LIKE wozniak. He and I are similar in a lot of ways. And some may see my attitude as very different, but I used to be more like him in THAT respect. It turns out Steve WOZNIAK has a lot of toyotas, and was misquoted, so he was on CNN today. He had a problem with HIS prius that he thinks is a software problem. Anyway, they asked HIM about the ipad! He responded similarly to how I would. So what did he say? Paraphrased....

Well, I am a bit technical, and want it to have more functionality. But THEN I thought about all the schools I have helped, and the people that I have talked to that couldn't afford a mac, but wanted them, and could use a simi=plified interface for browinsg the internet and reading books, and I thought WOW, this would be perfect for them.

So HE realizes that there are problems, and it is limited, but it has a market.

All i got to say about the iPad is this....

The Ipad is the old man's of lady's iphone. I truly could not justify buying an iphone. In Texas my sister stood in line for hours to get hers. I did not see the logic. But the IPAD for $500 is a treasure. go to the Apple store and just touch it. It is a perfect teaching tool. Schools will eat this thing up

Again in the South the 7th graders get laptops (in this specific school) these laptops run $900+ even with a discount. The IPAD is going to sell out. People don't see the big picture. Everything Apple is elegant, simple easy to use that is why it sells.

I believe that the same was said about the iPod when it came out. While I don't see a purpose in my life for the iPad, I'm sure that some will and I'm sure Steve Jobs has a vision past what is portrayed here.

One thing you have to appreciate, especially from this group, is the marketing efforts of Apple.

I'm fed up with all my idiot friends on facebook swooning over this piece of junk. Now my Samsung netbook, that is a classy piece of technology and my new girlfriend loved it.

I do admire Apple's marketing machine though, I guess they can sell idiots anything with an "i" prefix.

Ipad will be just fine. Just give it some time and if there are any kinks, they will fix it and people will flock to it over and over.

I think people want the latest and greatest thing to hit the market these days and it almost becomes like a fad where you have to have it. Think of it like this years christmas toy - zhu zhu pets. Have you seen these things? They cost $10 at stores and they were going for $150 on ebay.

Point being, yes this is new and people want it. Will it sustain its popularity. Only time will tell but with all the products that have come out before hand, I think the ipad will do just fine...

Quite frankly, I still dont see the point of the iPad other than surfing the net off your couch. But, if that's all you want, what's wrong with a cheap 10" netbook or even the 11" Macbook Air?

Well wont be long and the new android software for tablets will be out then we will see how good the ipad is.

Ipad is a great piece of kit however just like android phones are starting to take over, in fact this month they equaled Iphone, I think you will see android tablets flooding the market.

Flash no problems, apps you can built easier and in general lot better for marketers.

Allen then you will have choice. I agree with nearly everything you say but I would go android.
