Cross-selling between eBay and Scribd

I am stunned by the generosity I have seen here on WF.

In the interests of paying it forward, here's a system I am developing which may be of use to someone.

To sell downloadable information products (PDF e-books, whatever), first implement a system to host and digitally deliver your products - e.g. clickbank.

Create a "catalog" of these products in MS Word with a "buy now" button linked to the clickbank URL of each product.

Also create a button linked to the URL of your ebay "products for sale" page.

Upload this word doc to Scribd. The hyperlinks will remain live and clickable from within the Scribd iPaper. It is your choice whether or not to allow the catalog to be downloaded as a PDF. I have had good results from folks downloading the catalog for offline reading. The hyperlinks in the downloaded PDF remain live.

Create a standalone document containing an excerpt (two or three pages) of your actual product which you will be selling on CD via ebay. At the bottom of the page, write the words "for more information, click here" and create a hyperlink to your scribd profile page. Upload this document to scribd.

To generate interest in the product and to drive traffic to your scribd account, build some ebay listings for a physical sale of a CD or DVD with your product on it. Embed the scribd excerpt into the ebay listing using code from a basic WYSIWYG HTML editor like MS Frontpage. Set the auction to 7 days and create one or two per week.

When they see your listing, the customer gets value (reads a sample chapter of the e-book) and a desire to read more. They click through to your Scribd profile where you can direct them to the catalog and they will purchase the same or similar products via direct download.

Some will buy a CD directly from the ebay listing, while others will do a direct download. Turn those ebay browsers into customers!

You do not need a website or blog to have a direct download e-store. Use both ebay's and scribd's ranking in the search engine stakes to sell more.

Depending on the product, your sales copy and the niche, you should begin immediately making money for the cost of a couple of low-cost ebay listings per week.

Combine this method with a blog or website and you should see results.

Can anyone see any problems with this system?

  • Seems like a whole lot of clicking and hope. Very long way around. I'd bet the conversions would be very low. People have little time. If you want them to buy something why send them all over the place?
