Windows 7 blows away Vista...BUT...XP blows them both away IMHO. The only reason I'm using 7 is because Best Buy wanted $300 extra to downgrade me to XP. I figured it was time to learn something new. My desktop has XP on it though.

I love using Mac gear, but it's a personal thing. Definitely not for everybody... and Windows makes more sense for cost-conscious people (that know how to properly take care of the system).

I upgraded from XP to 7 and I really like it. Finally - a better font viewer! Only problem I had was getting my HP color LaserJet to work ... in color. Finally fixed that yesterday.

I want to upgrade my other systems at some point too.

I used XP for years, and loved it. I tried Vista on a friends computer and wasn't impressed in the least (especially considering all the bugs and security holes that were being reported). I switched to Windows 7 a few months ago, though, and I couldn't be happier. Microsoft finally got an OS right, for a change. I highly recommend it to anyone still on the fence about switching. 7 is much lighter, and therefore much faster. Navigation is also much-improved over Vista, as well.

    - Windows Server 2003

    - Red Hat

    Depends what I'm doing....

I use XP now. Have passed by Vista in silence. Haven't used it in the businesses of most of my offline IT customers either.

Windows 7 looks to be quite another creature though, so I'll probably go for that on my next computer.

My normal OS of choice is any nix base, though I typically just run Ubuntu for the simplicity of it. Before that I was using Fedora Core 11.

I was dual booting with Vista for Photoshop and photoshop only. I got it intentionally full of adware and spyware and formatted my entire hard drive to Windows 7 because all the IM programs/tools I've come across are all for Windows.

Linux beats XP. And for all the complaint about Vista, I've never had a Vista specific complaint.

What is with all the hate on Vista? I have had no problems with it bar 1 update that screwed up the registration info but that was quickly remedied a system restore.

Perhaps its just me but the impression I get from those who do not like Vista is that they purchased it without first bothering to check its hardware requirements before installing it.

You're right on the money Big Mike...

One thing for folks to watch out for!

Many machines with Windows 7 on them will be 64-bit. All that means in English is that it can take advantage of more memory (RAM).

Unfortunately, what it also means is that if you are at the local WalMart, Best Buy or whatever generic store you have in your neck of the woods, the salesperson may say "you really need this one with 64 bit" or worse, not mention it all...

MANY older devices WILL NOT WORK with 64 bit operating systems because the drivers (the programs that make them work) won't function.

So, you can end up with a new PC, then after much frustration, be making a trip back to the store to get a new printer, scanner, whatever to work with that new PC!

I'm all for 64-bit (have used it for a few years even), but folks have to be aware that some devices won't work with it.

I've voted that I'm a Mac person... But in reality my "career" background is as a backend infrastructure/server consultant - and predominantly Windows....

My main workhorse I switched to being a 13" Macbook Pro purely for the size and weight - but still giving me the power I need. I was going to put Windows straight on it, but found Snow Leopard to be very good, so stuck with that... Though I do have Windows 7 running as a virtual machine in it.

Also use XP, various flavours of Linux and have moved my other Vista PC up to Windows 7 now.

Windows 7 is fantastic. It is so much more responsive than Vista. What I love the most is how you can drag and knock a window to the left or right and the window will automatically resize verically to half of your screen.

This is a feature that attracted me to Windows 7 also, their adverts do work. It is a great tool for a writer, specially when researching or even rewriting your own articles. Invaluable.
