Google adwords question

I posted this question int he PPC forum but it's really slow in there and I need a few opinions so forgive me for the double post.

I did some keyword research and found a phrase that is searched 280 times a day and when I searched that phrase on google I saw there is no PPC ads for the keyword phrase.

So I went and created an adwords campaign targeting that phrase and now adwords is showing that my ad isnt showing because the quality score was poor, What does that mean?

Also it said the suggested cpc for that keyword to be on page 1 is $6, how can it be $6 if there is no competition?

I am lost..

Regards

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Google goes thru some internal gyrations and generates that quality score you're talking about. They base it on how relevant your landing page is to the text in your adword ad. This is a biggee. Make your page more relevant and they charge you less.

I suspect they also score your page based on the size of the site it is in, too, and on a variety of other super-secret criteria.

BTW, Jan, I just looked at your blog and have a question. I'm not much of a blogger, but keep seeing this reference to "pinging". I'm guessing this is some kind of submission to directories or something, but not sure. Can you explain what it is all about and does it only apply to blogs?

In the settings on every page of my blog I can set my page to be pinged, I am no expert in this but I know that pinging is a way to let the search engines know about your page's existence and therefore the Search engine spiders will visit your blog more often.

As far as if you can only use it with blogs I can't answer that question. Maybe someone else here can clarify that?

      Cheers,

      Jan

My ads are live but still not showing because of loq quality score. It says my keyword aren't triggering the ads to show. I don't understand it.
Has this happened to anybody before?

I would really call Google and ask them why this is happening.

If the keyword phrase does not reflect the content of your blog, then you'd have a low quality score; which might explain the $6 a click. Try using Google Keyword Generator to generate what it thinks are good keywords for your site, and see if they match the keywords/keyphrase you're aiming for.

I know for a fact my landing page is very relevant to my keyword phrase, almost too relevant. I'll probably open a support ticket or something.

      Thanks for the help everyone.

This has everything to do with quality score...

Google does not generate minimum bids base on your competition. So, the only reason this is happening to you is because your quality score is weak.

It's all about the relevance of your:
    -keyword phrase
    -landing page
    -ad.

Once you improve the quality of each of these... you will notice a change.

I'm working on series of Adwords videos that may be of assistance to you when I finish them all.

I planned on doing one video initially... later decided to do more. Let me know if you want the link...

I also must add that you may have a low search volume keyword.

      Make sure that you try

      broad matching
      exact matching
      phrase matching

Each will have different search volume result...

If low keyword volume is your issue... you will have to wait for your keyword to accrue more traffic...

If you need a little more help... PM me and we can hop on the Yahoo Messenger

      Peace

p.s. good luck with opening that support ticket with Google... they tend to give very ambiguous responses.

I am not sure why this would happen if your landing page is relavent.

Have you used that landing page to advertise another product?

This might be due to the history of the landing page content, however i would send them a quick support email and see what they say.

        Good Luck!

Here's the message I get from them

          Ad showing?
          No
This keyword isn't triggering ads to appear on Google or the search network.

For details on specific criteria for this test, click the following link.
          Details and recommendations »

To match specific targeting conditions (like geographic region), use the
          Ads Diagnostic Tool.

          Quality Score:
          Poor (2/10)
          Details and recommendations »

The funny thing is that my ads are showing on the content network but not the search.I know my site is relevant to the keyword phrase and I get a good quality score if I use a different keyword phrase that my site isn't even optimized for. Weird
Also the daily searches for my keyword phrase is almost 300 according to wordtracker so its not a low volume keyword.

Use Google to search for articles on how you can improve your quality score.

Like people have already said: improve ad, kw and your landing page, find Google guideliness about the landing page. Do you have a link to your privacy policy and other pages. Do you have outgoing links at all (you should), is your opt-in too high at the page... is your content on the page original. do you even have content on the page... May sound funny but all those things affect your QS. Do everything like you would for SEO: keywords in the meta tags, on topic content etc.
