What does "Thanked so many times" mean here?

What does # of Thanks and Thanked so many times mean in this forum? I want to know the purpose of that. That's all.
#thanked so many times

Guess its to see how much you contribute that is helpful, compared to just posts saying "yeah i agree" or whatnot. Its an indication of how meaningful the posts are that people have left. Hope that helps.... you can thank me now! hehe

The number of thanks is the number of times that you have pressed the "Thanks" button at the bottom right of someone else's post.

Thanked x times means the number of times that other people have pressed the thanks button on your own posts.

I often use the thanks button to support a position that another member has taken on a particular subject. I will add a thanks when someone has posted information that I find I can use, or that I thibnk I can use. I will add a thanks when someone answers a question that I have posted.

A lot of the time people are posting with something like "thanks, that helped me too" and then everyone who reads the thread has to read that post. If you just press the thanks button and don't post, you save making the threads longer and still let the poster know you agree.

There are other uses for thanks. The number of thanks given for a particular post is presented at the bottom of each post. If you open a thread and see an OP with a lot of thanks, you can get an idea of whether the thread is important or not. As you skim through, if you see a post in the middle of a thread that has received a number of thanks you know that someone has taken a position that others are either supporting or are at the very least glad to have discussed.

Thanks is both a voting system and a way marking those members who have been helpful.

    Hi,

I click the thanks button when YOU
    • Add value to... whatever
    • Make me laugh
    • Make me think
    • Agree with me
    • Disagree with me nicely
    • Disagree with me rudely (just to confuse you)
    • Perform a kindness for someone
    • Give me a great idea
    Etc.

It means a lot of things, how helpful the post was to you, how much it helped, and saying Thanks demonstrate gratitude to people who helped.

      Hi George

      [start humour]
I don't quite agree with your post, as a matter of fact, I think it's a ******* stupid idea, so stupid that I'm going to do perform a great kindness for you - I'm going to agree with it just to make you feel better.

If you are not logged in at the Warrior Forum you will not see the buttons, including the thanks button, at the bottom right of each post.

If you find a post helpful while you are browsing the forum you can click the 'Thanks' button and the poster will receive a credit as being 'Thanked.' If someone clicks the thanks button for one of your posts, you will get credit.

Basically, the thanks button shows that you are a conscientious forum member and user as the thanks are given entirely on a voluntary basis from other members.

Don't be shy about giving away thanks where thanks are due.

I think some people worry about thanking too much sometimes as they want to be seen with more thanks.

I don't judge people just on how many thanks they have. And a lot of times I will look at how many they have given.

If I see a noob who has thanked a lot of people, it can be a sign that they are eager to learn and truly grateful.

I do go back through and look at the posts they thanked and see what it is all about.

It really costs me nothing to give a thank you (except one click closer to carpal tunnel ).

Its a popularity contest thing, if a newbie offers advice, he will most likely no get a thank you button hit. If an oldie offers the same advice, lots of people will hit that thanks button. It means nothing...

I'm not going to go looking for posts, if I see one which comes up I'll show you. I have seen it a lot, old people get thanked, new people get minimal thanks.

There's an element of truth in your point, but that's life!

There's a simple solution: carry on giving good value in your posts and soon you too will be considered 'old' enough to get the thanks you reckon you deserve.

But it must be said, I've seen folk with less than 10 posts get a heap load of thanks for quality posts. Elder statesmen (and women) may have a loyal following and their posts may garner 'Thanks' by default, but don't be bitter about that, just carry on doing what you're doing and you will be rewarded accordingly.

It is true that a lot of the veterans will get more thanks. However, I wouldn't reduce it to a juvenile popularity contest: these people often do post things that are really that revolutionary or insightful and thus get their well-deserved thanks. The more successful the person is, the more likely odds are they will have MORE to contribute.

This is not to say that newer folks do not have anything of that high value to contribute, and I do see newer people post valuable posts quite often. The content of their post might not even be a factor, but the number of people following (more people who follow you, more likely to get thanks)

I'm not saying that they don't post revolutionary and good things, them posts deserve to get the thanks. But it is a popularity contest in a sense, I have seen oldies drop a one line reply and get like 5 thanks when really that reply wasn't even insightful. You also talk about a following, that just says that it is a popularity contest.

There may be some of that going on, but probably not nearly as much as you seem to think. People who are popular here are popular for a reason. It's not just longevity or verbosity.

It's not always just about whether the advice offered was particularly helpful.

Some people just have a way of saying things that make you go "Oh yeah now I get it!" It can be as much the presentation as the message.

Some people draw from their extensive experience on the subject at hand and give a very detailed post to get a point across.

I've gotten thanks for making people laugh and given them for the same reason.

I do see this often also. I try to contribute to people's questions as much as I can, but rarely get thanked.

It does not bother me as I just like to focus on learning here and not worry about the little stuff.

Although it just popped into my head, it could affect someone's sales in a WSO or something of that nature...even if the product was very good and original people could see a low "thanks" count and be discouraged...I have actually looked at this before too.

      Eh, just a thought.

It is an indication of how reliable and useful your comments are to the community and also a great way of building community and networking by endorsing others. So when you post, don't SPAM, be useful and add good content because your little post just may very well be the catalyst to someones success here on the warrior forum. Also if somebody has helped you and their information has been useful then by all means thank them. It only takes a moment.

If you are in this forum just to wait for people to thank you for your posts, you are simply wasting your precious time because you may never get one.

Success here, just like in any other forum or field of human endeavor, is not determined by how many times you are thanked.

Now, this is from my limited observation.
I would say your observation is very limited. You might see things in a more positive light if you take the lampshade off your head

People spend entirely too much time worrying about what other people have, or what others do, or why others have more posts or why others are thanked more .

Usually the complaints about post count and about the number of thanks are made by those with an entitlement attitude who don't want to put in the work and time necessary to have the same result. They want instant attention, instant recognition, and instant success.

And they are the same people who complain "successful marketers don't post here any more". Think the two could be related? Have you noticed that those who diss "gurus" are the first to be suckups when the guru posts here?

Forums are a bit like websites. When your site is new you can promote like crazy and you still won't immediately jump to the top google's search list in a popular niche. Some new members have instant credibility here because we know who they are and what they've done - but most have to earn creds over time.

For my own part, I think it is more important to have given lots of thanks than to have received lots of thanks.

Often I will see advice being given by someone with a low post count. If I also see that the individual has been here for awhile and has given a lot of thanks, then I may lend more creedence to poster's message, without needing to disect the advice first.

In a sense, the number of thanks given is an indication of the number of posts the poster may have read through, whereas the number of thanks received could be an indication of the number of threads he/she started. Of course, now that I've explained that all of the newbies will start thanking everyone for everything just to push their thanks count up.

Lamp shade guy - no, I don't disagree. However, I see "trading thanks" more on newbie posts than anywhere else. If a small group routinely thank each other every time they post - it's easy to spot that and it doesn't matter.

It's not a contest for most of us. I have a lot of thanks issued and received - but if you look at my profile here's what you will find.

I VERY seldom start a thread. I don't promote my services in my posts or suggest people "pm me". I just answer questions where I have some experience, express my opinion and occasionally pointedly question the reason behind a thread or post by someone who seems to have an "agenda".

I thank people who give helpful, accurate information in reply to a question and those who express a well thought out opinion that makes sense - and sometimes just to indicate I agree with the stance or comment they made.

But, I do the same in person. I thank people who wait on me in retail stores and restaurants, in the motor vehicle office or a convenience store. I never treat sales clerks rudely because of a store's policies. It takes nothing away from "me" to appreciate someone else's effort and it might make their day a bit better. That's a win-win.
