If you were a broke newbie, where would you start

OK the headline may be a little extreme but if you had to start your internet marketing career again from scratch what would be the very first thing you do??

For me personally I would start of with some small affiliate marketing campaigns, setup a free blog at Blogger.com and use Squidoo to start sending some traffic over. If I had a little bit of money I might outsource a few articles and post them at the popular article directories.

So if you had to start again (on little or no budget) where would you begin?

I'd probably write a few content articles for people on IM forums to build up some bank. Then go buy a domain, build a landing page and hit some facebook traffic.

        Hi AragornStrider,

I know what you are talking about having no one at the beginning to listen to or available to have to talk to.

        A little how I started...

I began with being an affiliate member to a free program and was trained to look up to my up line... I have access to 12 levels upwards, all their e-mail address and started to get someone to talk to me... But you probably can imagine no reply EVER. The conclusion out of that was that they were no leaders if they don't follow up and listen to their down line. So I had to go my own way the first 5-6 months and listened to people via newsletters and what they taught. Then with the Social Media Storm everything went very quick and I was accumulating 100's of friends to my accounts and was able to find real jewels under them to whom I built great relationships with. Even to people where our businesses currently not touch each others but the exchange of information and future planning is what brings you further. If it happens that your up line in a business opportunity turns out to be leaders then you are starting in a safe harbour. But if this is not the case you have to look somewhere else... Here and right now I offer you to connect with me and discover which mentoring is availble... In conclusion what I want to mention is that you need to get active and find people... If you make that your goal then people will cross your path and these relationships can lead to great achievements and friendships. So here we go, offer is made...

Excellent advice Blase. Big point there on Focussing on ONE thing. Too often product launches come and go and people jump on board and forget the last startegy they learnt.

Pick one strategy. Master it and then move on.

I like this advise and most definitely need it, one of the things I'm most guilty of is focusing on TOO many things which just makes everything harder. I have been consistent with Article Marketing but not disciplined enough.

      I especially like Step 6

"6. Unsubscribe from all other email lists."

I get so many messages from so many gurus it's overtaking my email box, as of tomorrow a.m. when I check my check my messages I'm going to start unsubscribing and start concentrating on ONE thing.
      Thanks for the advice!

        Pup,

I'm glad you got some value from this post. Good to hear that you can realise the importance of focussing on just ONE thing. It is a great piece of advice that will serve you well as a develop online.

Lots of great advice here. The only thing that I would add and this will help you to focus and not bounce for one great product to the next...

It doesn't matter if you're a newbie or have knowledge....

Create a business plan for yourself.

That's the one thing I see with many marketers, they have great intentions and start with lots of energy and find that they get side-tracked along the way and end up starting again from the beginning.

The other thing I notice and maybe it's just me but...

No matter how long I think something will take, it always takes longer. Something will invariability come up to set you back, prepare for that happening. Plan for that happening, and you'll pull out less of your hair.

Ok, I've lost it all. But I have the knowledge I have.

I need a niche, and I need to be an expert in it.

I need to find something people are looking for because otherwise I may as well be selling sand in the desert.

So, I will write down my interests. Then I will google and see who else is interested in my interests.

I want to sell something that will not bore me to tears. I want to also sell something that people want to buy.

I need a niche I am willing to marry and follow for the long haul. I want to see some early income from it, and I want to have some long term income as well. I am going to live and breathe this niche and be the expert of all experts on the topic.

So, I have no money, right? Or do I? No, I spent it all on crack and whores, so, I am broke.

I need to create a web presence for my niche. I will do that by creating a free website.

I can do blogger, or weebly, or I can get a free domain and free hosting. Hmm.

I like wordpress - but I know that wordpress (the free one) will not allow me to host a blog on them and sell stuff, so I am going to get a free hosted wordpress site, and I am going to pm Alexa Smith to remind me where the free hosting site she recommended is because right now it escapes me. Or, I am going to go through her posts to find it again if she is not responsive. I can't wait all day, so I will dig for answers if I have to.

Ok, so I have a blog and I will get a free domain as well - Free URL Redirection, No Ads! Short Free Domain Name (you.co.nr) just found this, not sure if it is any good but I will spend some time looking for a freebie.

Here is why - I need to have some where to set up an AR of some kind with a squeeze page and something to give away. This may be all temporary until I get some money to recover from everything I spent on the crack and whores.

I'm going to do a few sites - but need that wacky domain with the free hosting to have somewhere that my new followers can download my free ebook or guide that I'm going to give out to collect their names.

OMG, I have no money for aweber. This is going to be some work. I need to set up a freebie email addy - a good gmail account.

I am going to manually collect names.

        Yes, I am.

        Ok.

Because of my past experiences, I no longer can do adsense sites - so this is good because it narrows down what I can do.

I have spent some time researching on amazon, news channels, and some other places and looking for what people want info on and what is selling.

You know what they want? They want to know about the new Wii fit! Hey, I've been doing some workouts on it at my friends house. They all want to buy Wii and they will need to know about all the accessories on it and everything Wii.

I need to be careful on how I choose a domain because I don't want to infringe on a trademark. But I can do something with "fitness games" or something in my title and I can then discuss Wii on the site.

I'm going to give myself a challenge to use the Wii to lose weight and get in shape, and I'm going to blog about my journey. While I'm at it, I'll create a free guide or giveaway that will give the method and exercises I am using to get in shape. There are a lot of different ways to do this on the Wii.

I can sell some stuff via amazon, and honestly I don't think nintendo is going anywhere soon. I think the long term goal will be to sell ultimate workouts with the Wii based on what body type you are trying to achieve.

I'll need to consult with some of the pros in fitness. Hmm.

Ok, time to find some forums. Exercise, weightloss, etc. I need to show these people how I am using Wii to get to my goals.

I need a list of monetizing. I can do this through amazon initially, but need to create my guide which I can sell. I can do the ebook first, I can submit that book and sell it as well on kindle, and I'll be able to publish it too.

I have established my free domain/hosted site. It is backed up with some other web 2.0 sites pointing to it - which I can edit at a later date to point to a site which I have paid for.

I'm going to do something wacky and set up a facebook fan page. Going to start a group of others who want to work out on Wii with me.

Going to have some regular meetings on Mondays - Free Conference Call, Phone Conferencing, Teleconferences - FreeConferenceCall.com

Yep, need to build a following - while I'm at it, I need to get some Twitter love and give out some Wii tips and advertise my free calls to talk about Wii fit experiences.

Ok, day one is over. :p

Honestly though, I would decide on something I enjoy and there is a following for. I would build up something that had a few good years in it at least.

And as someone else above said -

Now all the newbies that read this have a few plans, all successful I presume from the authors, and now they can just research each step of the plan here on WF and slowly and confidently start to build a nice income and business.

Great post that needs to be bookmarked by the noobs!

There have been so many threads started with basically this same theme over and over and over again.

Basically, every few days (if not more often) there will be several threads that turn up "How to get started" "Best way for a newbie to get started" "Where to begin" and "How can I make X dollars fast?"

A lot of people will suggest writing articles as their first advice, but it's been said a number of times that unless we know what skills (or other resources) you bring to the table, it's very difficult to give advice, and there is no ONE answer.

AvenueGirl, Blase, and Dr. O have all offered good and useful information. But again, it really is going to be different for each person.
First, I'm going to scratch that cynical itch that keeps bugging me from time to time...

I'm guessing that about half of these "best way for a newbie to get started" threads are aimed at landing the results in an "expert" report on the best way for a newbie to get started. I'm not making any assumptions about this particular thread, I'm just saying...

Second, either way, I'm going to play along...

            > First, while going the total freebie way seems like the way to go, I'm thinking it might be better to figure out how to generate enough to get some kind of hosting account. Preferably with a free domain name.

So I'm going to get an author account at someplace like text-brokers.com and write a handful of cheap articles every month to cover my nut until I'm making enough to cover it on my own. The side benefit is that in choosing assignments, I get to see what topics people are willing to pay for content creation on, and even get a feel for the products offered. I won't steal these, but I will use them as ideas for researching my own product.

            > I'm going to follow Jill's advice and survey the topics I know something about and have an interest in already. If I can match one of them up with a hungry crowd, great.

I'll test these by setting up blogs and starting to build a list. I can't afford an autoresponder yet, unless I want to write some more cheap articles for cash. So I'll go old school and use a combination of mailing list programs and email addresses with vacation replies provided by my hosting account to simulate an autoresponder.

I'll create a variety of content and affiliate offers based on my chosen topic, and monitor the response. It shouldn't take long to find one or two hot subtopics that I can tap into, where the content I offer resonates with my audience. Hopefully, I also pick up enough affiliate money to devote my paid-article-writing time to creating my first product.

            > Since we're still talking minimal investment, I'll grab a copy of the $7 script to sell my product. I'll alternate my focus between generating traffic and optimizing conversion. Once I have an OTO that converts well, I'll start offering affiliates 100% commission on the front end product to continue building my buyer list. By this point, I have enough for a "real" autoresponder, so I start building email sequences to both offer additional products and services and further refine my understanding of my market.

And because I didn't have cash to go hog-wild buying info products, I've leaned heavily on this forum and my now-finely-tuned research skills.

Stick to your strengths and interests, to start off with.

Trying to do everything yourself all at once is overwhelming and the best way to induce procrastination and inertia.

If you're a great writer (ahem ), stick with writing. Offer your services in a WSO, start up your own blog detailing your services and add to it frequently. Write articles for article marketing, write Squidoo lenses, write on forums and start networking with others.

If you're a web designer, stick with that. Offer your services in a WSO, frequent appropriate forums and start creating networks with others. Buy some PLR material, re-brand it and sell it.

If you're a great organiser, look into VA services, or write (or have written) an eBook on how to get organised and sell it.

                You get the idea.

The trick is, as has been said already, to stick with ONE thing until you master it. Starting with your own strengths and abilities is the best way to ensure you maintain your interest and work at it.

                Cheers,

Ok, so this is officially my first post on this forum.
...And what a thread to get started!

I think your suggestions are spot on,
and concisely delivered. I like that.
Ha - I especially like the advice given by Blase:
#4: Focus on that ONE thing.

Truer words were never spoken, my friend.

After years of toiling, I'd have to say that this has been
my biggest downfall - Lack of Focus.
    Can anyone relate?

Now, even though I may be considered to be somewhat of a "Noob" by a lot
of your standards, I'd still like to contribute my $.02.

Even if I'm just talking to myself here, I think it's best to remember that it all really boils down to TWO things:

    1. Traffic
    2. Conversion.

Focus on those two core skills (and all the lovely details that go in to them, lol),
and take Consistent ACTION on what brings in the revenue, and
I don't see how you can go wrong.

Yeah, there's a lot more to it, but I believe simplicity is best.

    Especially in my first post.

Now, if you're broke & just starting out, the best way of bringing in the traffic
is with content-filled, keyword-rich articles & Press Releases, no doubt.
    So:
    1. Pick your market.
    2. Find a high-converting product on Clickbank. Don't worry about the competition
    3. Do some research (what pain does the market have? How can this product solve it?)
    4. Put up a Blog for free on Blogger.com, or Wordpress.com w/ some content/keywords & your affiliate link sprinkled in there a few times.
    5. Write your first couple of articles. Proofread to make sure they make sense, etc.
    6. Submit them to a few article directories (e.g. ezinearticles.com)
    7. Make sure you have your 'Bio Box' in there that points back to your Blog/Landing Page.
    8. Keep writing more articles that have the keywords you're going after.
    9. Repeat 5-8. Stay focused!!!
    10. Check your results as you go.
    11. Reinvest some of your profits (that you're hopefully making) back in to your education.
    12. Consider doing some PPC.
    13. Always test your results.

I guess the biggest thing would be really to just GET STARTED & Keep at it.

"And that's all I got ta say about that."

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to contributing a lot more
as I get to know you guys.

    Peace,

    BigDaddy1

It really all depends on the variables that are included like time, knowledge, and resources.

If you were broke then the free route would be out the window if you didn't already have a site on Google as SEO takes time unless you stumble across a good niche by chance, can get it indexed, and ranked high in the SERPS in a short period of time.

If I wanted some quick cash then I would offer some services in SEO, build my bank account and then launch a series of mini sites to create some passive income.

The advice of Blase is the only logical one.
If I am a total newbie then how would I know what route to take unless I have a mentor.

If there is a mistake I would have never done when I first started, then it's definitely the lack of focus. And I think this is the problem nr. 1 for newbies.

I would even say that it's difficult not to make money if you do only ONE thing and focus on it long enough.

I hate to say this, because it sounds like I'm trying to avoid being helpful. But I would say at least here. I'd start with the SEARCH function.

But again, it really is going to be different for each person.

u're going to have to do everything yourself before you can hire people. This means writing descent articles and all that. You should be able to get somewhere without having to pay anything and then just reinvest money. Make surer you have a plan made before you do stuff. Write it down on paper and the keywords your going to target. Start with low comp keywords with a descent search volume and try to find enough keywords that will bring you some descent traffic and just target them.

Just go one step at a time. I'd say start with keywords research and all that stuff. You're going to be very busy spending a lot of time at the start but you will know that later it will get easier. Just stay focused and work. You know what needs to be done.

I would offer my service to people and in the same time learn stuff. Some gurus or successful internet marketers offer free intern programs were, you do tasks for them every day and you get education from them in exchange..That is something I would do.

To raise cash for my business I would offer service, article writing, linkbuilding, etc..

I'd still find the money for hosting, domain and autoresponder. List building has completely changed my mindset and I'm a total convert.

If I couldn't afford them, I'd probably bum market using a high paying or recurring affiliate programme.

I'd build a squeeze page offering
a killer opt in bribe and drive traffic
    to it like crazy.

Then I'd set up a clickbank account

money so I can outsource the article

    1. I will stop thinking of what more to learn because learning will cost me some bucks but the good or bad news is that I'm broke.

    2. Start thinking of how to use what I had learned before I became broke to earn.

    3. Rinse and repeat.

I would write an ebook and promote it via free classifieds first this is what I did. The free ads allowed me to "test" what worked and didn't. I used paypal so all the money went right to me, no minimum to pull out the cash. I used a free gmail account as an "autoresponder" which when it received an email from paypal with certain text in it, sent an email to the buyer with a link to where I had the ebook stored for free in pdf format. I did not have a website, just used a paypal button in craigslist ads and backpages ads. It made money in about a week.

From there you can do a blog etc.

    Good luck

This is a great FREE and simple method for tackling the problem. I like the fact that you automated your follow up message via Gmail. Very clever and something I never thought of.

How are things going for you now that you are beyond the newbie stage?

I'd start with finding out what your area of interest is - very simple but often disregarded! See if you can relate it to a popular niche...for example, I love web and graphic design and once I designed some websites and squeeze pages with list building for my marketer friends - I had a product in the internet marketing niche!

Plus it's easier to stay interested if you have a passion for what you're doing and you can use your experience and skills to your advantage by helping others in the area they get stuck in and you excel.

On top of that, it's much easier helping out your competitors - although I don't like to call them competitors, but partners! Which can help you leverage your exposure!

Find out if people are interested in your skills by seeing if similar products are being sold in the market - you need a BUYERS market! Take a look at clickbank and ebay and see what results come up in google - see if the top ten sites are selling anything!

Check on related blogs and forums, see if people have problems and questions that need solving which can present a "need" for your skills.

Then I would get a domain name, some hosting and get a blog set-up. Start posting regulary with some really awesome content!

Next, get an autoresponder set-up (it's best to pay for this service - we use aweber) and add some great content in your follow up sequence.

Then I would put together some of your top secret information into a .pdf report to give away (make sure this is some really kick-a** information)

Put an opt-in form (from your autoresponder) at the top right of your blog for your newsletter and bonus free report...why?

    To build your list!!

The core of online businesses is to BUILD YOUR LIST! This will help you start building your list - a list that gives subscribers some awesome great free content and sells even more great products to - your own products and/or affiliate products without having to pay for it!

Next is to start driving TARGETED traffic! Visitors that regularly see your blog posts and join your list. You can also sell affiliate products and other stuff from your blog.

There are lots of methods to drive traffic, free and paid but too many to be all covered in a post. A good way to start driving targeted traffic for free is to comment on blogs and forums in your niche, leaving a link back to your site or preferably your squeeze page BUT DO NOT SPAM them, provide valuable information. The good thing about doing this is that the traffic will be targeted to your niche.

There are lots of ways to get started but personally, this way can help you establish yourself more and more over time as long as you keep building your list!...Just remember, if someone takes away your blog, your source of traffic, your adwords campaign, your sales page etc...you'll be fine because you STILL have the security of your loyal buyers in your own list! It's the core of any successful internet marketer...

This is how I would start if I had to do it again

    Nathan,

Thanks, I am not a full timer, but honestly I made some mistakes after what I look back on as an initial success.

The ebook stopped selling and I changed my focus to a blog as I was starting to read this forum. I decided to try to turn the content into a blog post and generate adsense income, which has not worked as well income wise. I can't really sell the ebook anymore since it has been available for free. If I knew then what I know now, when sales dipped, I would have started to do article marketing, more blog posting, yahoo answers, social bookmarking and giving away a "report" or something of value to build a list and to raise my profile in the time management niche.

At this point, I have learned a great deal and will change my approach to marketing, but I am convinced that writing content like ebooks is a way to generate income online. The lessons learned here have been valuable and will be put to use with my next ebook which is almost done.

Hopefully there are some lessons to be learned or new marketers.

If I was COMPLETELY BROKE, with the knowledge I have now (which no longer makes me a newbie) this is exactly what I would do.

Scrounge up money to make flyers designed from my home computer to advertise an affordable MMO digital product, probably from Clickbank, and I would put as many flyers on windshields as possible at a mall or large retail store, providing I don't get caught by security. Then I would try to get a little money to cloak the URL with my own. Rinse and repeat to different areas.

I actually may try this next weekend for the hell of it.

If you are in the US I would start with eHow. I make a nice little residual income from there each month that is way better than any other revenue sharing site. I also used xomba and infobarrel for revenue sharing and to promote affiliate products. This way if I don't sell anything maybe I'll at least get a click.

As a confessed broke newbie, I'll start right here, reading what the more experienced have to say, and taking advantage of your advices.
As an experienced super affiliate wannabe guru (that I'm not) I must say... article marketing, blogging, squidoo lenses, forum marketing, social media, all these free traffic driving to some affiliate link, until I make enough to buy a domain, a hosting and an autoresponder and start listbuilding. Sell as an affiliate, make my own product, run some webinars and seminars in las Vegas, hire a bunch of people to sell a MLM service and make a lot of money... *sight*

If I was a Newbie starting from scratch...the first five things that I would do is:

1 - Find a mentor/coach to learn from to help me with a marketing plan
2 - Get an autoresponder so I can start building my list (of course your mentor should explain this to you)
3 - Create a simple capture page with a catchy heading and an optin form
4 - Get a branded blog to help me brand myself
    5 - Pick 2 or 3 marketing strategies (2 free, 1 paid If I could afford it)

#1 is extremely important because if you do not learn from someone who has experience and can lead you to the water, things will take longer.

I would not overwhelm myself, but instead, set myself up first then keep my marketing really simple and stay consistent.

I would probably start with either 1. bum marketing, which everyone knows how to do, or 2. creating leverage - not as many people know this.

Okay, here's the strategy, assuming I'm a total noob and I have a budget of $40.

    Creating Leverage...

Step 1. What do I know a little about?
Step 2. Write a free report on it.
Step 3. Make a squeeze page (I'm not too picky, I'd just use Blogger or Weebly.)
Step 4. Find the big players in my niche --> Big-Boards.com, find niche forums, Google searches, Directories, etc.
Step 5. Offer to do whatever the hell they want, and in exchange they email their list about your free report. They now also would have a partner, and a JV/affiliate.
Step 6. Send an email out

Done. However, I'd tweak a few things in there... I tried keeping the amount of steps relatively low.
