Why The World Didn't End On Tuesday at 1.475pm!

On Tuesday at 1.45pm I thought the world had ended.

This story really starts about a year ago when my main laptop, on which all my work was stored, (I know, I know) suddenly decided to have it's screen go black, never to reappear.

"It's ok", says my computer repair guy, "we can clone your laptop and put it on a new pc".

Great, I thought. So the guy does his stuff and I then have a new pc with the cloned hardrive (or something).

So, all is well except for the fact that I can't backup this pc to an external hardrive, nor can I back it up to external backup services. Why, because my pc is cloned, every time I try to back it up to anywhere, it crashes my pc.

So I save some files on disc etc but cannot save any of my software that I've paid thousands for. Anyway, I carry on mymerry way with the 'it's ok. It'll never happen to me' type mindset.

Then, on Tuesday last week at 1.47pm precisely. My computer crashed.

I rebooted and got just a black screen that said 'Invalid boot.INI file - Booting from C:/windows/

Does that mean anything to you? Cos it sure didn't mean jack to me. So I rebooted again. Same thing. Now I'm panicking. I call my pc repair guy. "Bring it in and we'll take a look", says he. So, full of fear and trepidation I take it along to him.

Upshot is that he calls me today and tells me that his hard drive forensic guy cannot do a damn thing and ALL my stuff is lost and gone forever. All my thousands of dollars worth of software, all my work for the last few weeks (I know, I flippin' know!!!)

I'm now sitting here with a new pc and because it's not cloned, it CAN be backed up. And boy will it be backed up (probably every 5 minutes)! The fact is, that this is a bare pc now, with hardly anything on it and I now have to set to and start rewriting tutorials that I lost, re-recording a ton of video tutorials again that are intended for my mentoring clients. And it's only when you come to do stuff that you realise you no longer have the software any more to do the job with.

Oh, yes, all my passwords were stored on Roboform, so they are all gone as well. So now when I go to login to any sites where I have a membership (lots of them) I don't know the *###%%*** password. Even my Youtube, Clickbank, (thankfully not my Paypal) passwords are gone.

This is going to be painful (and expensive). And it's all my own fault for thinking it would never happen to me. So this is my admission, right here, of me being a true and utter clutz!

But you know what?

Yes, you know I'm a clutz, I know that. But you know what else?

Here's what else... The world did NOT, in fact, end at 1.47pm on Tuesday.

Before too long, I will be working back at full strength again, with everything replaced. And because I know how to make a very decent income online, the software will be replaced and so will everything else (with a little work and effort).

For a time, I thought the world HAD ended. It sure felt like it. I felt like crying if I'm honest.

But then, that evening, I watched the news and what was going on in Haiti and elsewhere in the world. Now THAT is something to cry about.

Makes you get things in perspective really, doesn't it?

Anyway, I suppose the message I wanted to pass on is to not be a clutz like I was and for the sake of your sanity, make sure you don't think the same thing can't happen to you, because sooner or later, it will.

Can't hang around any longer. I need to go BACK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Roy,

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Frustrating to say the least.

You make two very good points, the first one being always back everything up. Redundancy, in this case, is your friend. Having a backup of your backup is your best bet. As far as your PC, having separate copies of your software is your best bet. Especially a copy of your operating system. That way if something happens, it's easy enough to get your PC fixed or even buy a new one, and then just reload all your software and you're back in business. I have had to do it numerous times over the years.

For all your files, backing up to an external hard drive, or two,is the best way to keep everything readily available when you make the move.

But more important, is the point you make about the world not ending. I know the feeling, as I experienced the same thing when I first started with my first PC. When it crashed, I thought the world had ended. But like you said, life goes on and before you know it you're up and running again.while it's no fun to have to go through it, there's always light at the end of the tunnel.

I guess it's a lot like falling off a bicycle. After the first time, it's not as big a deal and you know what not to do the next time.

    Things will get better.

    Thanks,

    John

I don't understand why your old "cloned" computer could not be backed up. Why can't you just re-download software you already purchased?

The Boot.ini file is one added with WIN NT systems, and gives drive information. Here is what THIS one looks like:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional"
    /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

It COULD mean that file is somehow bad, was deleted, or your disk is bad.

You CAN'T simply backup windows software. Most depends on the registry, etc...

And if you do anything worthwhile, some stuff CAN'T be recovered. BACKUP!

all my PCs have 2 hard drives. One for prgrams and one for docs. if the program hard drive crashes, it is no big deal. Reload programs from disc and the docs drive is good. In the rare case the docs drive crashes, it is backed up automatically to 4 different paces.

    Just a quick note Roy.

The average so called "hard drive forensic guy" in your local computer store is about as much of an expert on data recovery you are on nuclear fissionable isotopic reactors.

He'll be running the normal pretty much off the shelf utility tools on it and that's about it.

If you truly have mission critical and costly to replace work, you need to send the HD to a professional outfit who will probably charge the best part of $500 or so and will be able to extract basically any thing, you can get data of a burnt, bashed and drowned HD if you know exactly what you're doing and have the right tools.

BTW: In regards backing up, I'm quite lazy as well but what I do have is a little process I go through pretty much every day which backsup my essentials to a little external drive I have.

    This consists of:

    Roboform backup
    Favourites Backup
    Outlook.pst
    Dreamweaver profiles.
    AM notebook lite backup
    filezilla profiles.
A backup of a directory on my HD where I store ALL my data, I point all my application data paths to the same directory on my HD, it's a one stop drop off for everything that can be user configured in terms of a datapath so my machine is simple to backup.

It's a relatively small backup , takes under 9 minutes, and about 8 of those minutes is the data directory. I have it on pretty much a batch file which I click when I leave the home office in the evening.

While it does mean if I have a full system crash I still need to go and re-install all my applications, at least I have all the important stuff saved and can be back up and running with an exact replica of my email system full password functionality, and all my sites and configs ready to run and all my user data from word documents and PDF's to websites and videos all in under 10 minutes.

Then I just slap on the apps.

I tried cloning packages in the past, they always caused headaches, may be better now but this works fine for me and it's quick as hell, cloning always used to take over a damm hour or more so never kept it up, this is 10 minutes every day or every other day .

Ok. Not really, but it often feels like I need to be, when it comes to working out geeky computer stuff sometimes!

Thanks for the outline of what you do, it was very useful.

    Cheers

Roy, I feel your pain, when my computer died while in the middle of writing for a client.

However, I did have a backup, something I always do.

Now to make you feel really happy

Rob took my computer to the computer market in HK, and they said they would look at it. They did, and basically said it was dead. However, they also said they could clone it to another computer (which they would sell me).

In less than 12 hours they have cloned my old computer to a second hand computer, and they had recovered 97% of my old computer. I was able to backup from it, all my membership sites, passwords, software ran as before without me doing anything.

The cost of the second hand computer and the work was US$200

      Hi Bev

      Long time no speak.

That was the trouble with mine. I couldn't back up because of the cloning.
Glad you were able to do so though.

I'll probably need to talk to you soon re using your companies' services again.

Preparing my stuff to speak at the World Internet Summit in Perth at the moment (and yes, some of that work was lost too), so i'll give you a shout when I get back.

$200 is 1500HKD, about ten days' wages for your average HK citizen. I think you could have gotten it for less, but then again, it's hard to bargain when your data is at stake I guess

    Roy,
Someone suggested Acronis, so I'd like to suggest ShadoeProtect Desktop by Storagecraft. A long time ago we had a similar discussion on the forum and somebody told me that Acronis is based on Storagecraft. So you might want to go to the source.
One of the main factors of this is that the have what they call HIR, or Hardware Independent Restore, which means you CAN take your back from a dead pc and put it on a new one.
Now, even though I have Shadowprotect Desktop installed on 2 of my pcs, I luckily have not had to use that feature yet.

    Roy,

I am in the midst of losing everything myself. My desktop went down about 3 months ago, so I had to move everything over to my laptop which is on its way out. It's so slow and is about to explode it seems like.

I'm going to go get a backup hard drive today because of this post. I have been living in fear the past couple weeks and just haven't gone out to do this necessary step.

Just like you, if this laptop goes down, I've lost everything.

Yes, It happens to most people someday. When the task assigned has not been completed due to hidden variables like these, one has no option but to search for some alternative ways or wait patiently to get the clouds to clear. Patience pays in some ways. Alternative arrangements always comes handy. Those who face tough situations with a smile are able to surmount the barriers.

I really recommend Dropbox (Dropbox - Home - Online backup, file sync and sharing made easy.)! (I'm not affiliated, just a huge fan of it because it saved my bacon.)

It's free for 2 gigs of online-accessible storage (but I have 6.2 gigs from referring others and taking part in an "Ask for more space and we'll give it to you!" promotion ). You can easily share photos and files (yes, you can host downloadable files from it), sync stuff between two computers at once, share a special folder with the person of your choice and be updated whenever they update a file, and so on.

It actually saved my sanity when my laptop charging cable died and I had to work from school computers for a week. I could go to the Dropbox website, download the file, update it, and re-upload it very easily.

Obviously because of the storage limit, you can't backup absolutely everything (though you get 250 MB extra, I think, per referral), but I backup all my crucial stuff: business documents, school notes, etc.

Thanks Zabrina. I really need something to back up everything though and a couple of services mentioned in this thread look good.

The main purpose of this thread was to give a heads up to other warriors that this can (and most probably will, at some stage) happen to them, and to give them some ideas from other warriors posts as to how best to prepare/deal with the situation.
