What Is The Best Way To Protect WordPress Membership Post Content?

Hi Warriors,

This might be a really dumb question, but I can't in the life of me get my head around how to best create a membership site with WordPress that has trickled content (delivered via individual posts) to members over the space of weeks or even months?

Is this at all possible and if so, how?

I'm only wanting to offer one level of access (same price for all).

What I'm thinking is to offer a course that allows members to receive daily content trickled to their subscription. So if member A joins on Monday he or she will be on day 4 by Thursday whereas member B who joined on Wednesday will be on day 2.

Any suggestions, tips, tools will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Monika

few ways you can do it. You can use wordpress plugin called wishlist . Cost is 97 for 1 site or 297 if you want to use it on more than 1 site.

Free option is to do what I did. use aweber to deliver content and free wp plugin privateurl to protect the posts from other finding them that didnt pay etc. Hope that helps.

But how well does that really work for the user? Seems it'd be a PITA for the user if you published various posts and they wanted to go back to one? They'd have to go dig out the private URL instead of just navigating around a membership site? Or you just set up a slew of links on a private post that links out to all the other private posts?

it really depends on what your goal is? to have a membership site, or a continuity program sent via auto-responder. You can just include the last sessions link at the end of each new lesson. So on the private post you make for week 6 lesson you would have the link "go back to week 5 or last lesson" each lesson. Works great.

    Hi Monika,

I reckon you're looking for DigitalAccessPass.

    ---------------------------------------------

I think areaK makes a really valid point here re: usability. In fact, I'm trying to solve the same problem as you, for exactly the reason she's pointed out.

If we are trying to do the same thing, then this is the way I plan to overcome the delivery/access problem using DAP, and not cripple navigation around the site for paid, logged-in members who will want to access previous content without rummaging through their email box:

    - create a single level membership (DAP will add buyers to your Aweber list... or it will just send out an email without any need for a 3rd party autoresponder)

    - create a "release date" for every piece of content (i.e. post) to coincide with when the autoresponder messages get sent out (actually, staggered 1-day in advance to accommodate time-zone differences, i.e. autoresponder goes out on Days 1, 3, 5, 7... then... content gets released on Days 1, 2, 4, 6...)

    - as their membership "matures" -- and not before -- more and more links will start to accumulate in the sidebar (or wherever you put them), solving the accessibility problem and not giving access (or even protected links to your content) until the "days-since-joined" you've set has been reached.

    -------------------------

I actually put in a support ticket just this afternoon to ask Ravi something along these lines (plus some other stuff) so I'll post back when I hear from him -- unless he sees this thread first and responds himself.

    All the best with it!

      Hello TheNightOwl,

I really like this product from what I have seen so far. What I will want to do however is to release content on a daily basis to paid members so I will need to look into DAP to see whether I can do this too. So far I've seen they offer staggered delivery options so I have a feeling I'm onto a winner.

Thanks for pointing this out to me, I never knew this little beauty existed.

    Hi Monika

I just get a response from Ravi and I'm very happy! You can do this! Yay!

Of course, check with him directly. I'm not a staffmember or a programmer and i have no connection with DAP other than being a happy customer -- and an affiliate, naturally! (Why wouldn't you be an affiliate for such an awesome product!)

You'll notice that's not my affiliate link, above. (See, below, however)

    --------------------------

Anyway, for what it's worth, here's what I wasn't sure if I could do and emailed Ravi about (perhaps some other folks are also wondering if this is possible):

    - I have an existing site with plenty of existing content

    - I have an autoresponder that sends out messages saying something like "There's a new article for you. Click here to read it" (with a couple of more copywriting chops applied, though ,eh! )

    - All of the content is open to the search engines (and I get plenty of visitors who find the site from articles ranking well in the SERPs)

    - But... none of the content is linked to in the sidebar of the site (because that would defeat the purpose of the email list! )

    - I really don't like this model for all sorts of reasons (and it's just a little hobby site that has grown) so...

    - I want to convert the site to a paid annual membership and "drip" access to the content over that time (organising the content into a more logical progression, where content builds on and refers back to previous content... not exactly a "course;" but something similar, although a bit more free-form)

    - Thing is, I also want the first half of each article to be still be available to the search engines using a "Sneak Peek" [++more++] type tag

    - The "Read more..." link on the "Sneak Peek" posts should be a "smart" link which does the following:

    - if someone is not a member (or is not signed in), it gives them a message saying "Join or Sign In")

    - if someone is a member and they have access to that content, they simply get access to it

    - if someone is a member but they don't yet have access to that content, they get a message saying "Hold on... access to this is coming soon!" (this is especially what I meant by "smart")

    - This way, I can have (protected) links to all the content/categories in the sidebar so that prospects can see what's on the site and what they'll gain access to (over a year) once they sign up. At the moment, it's just an empty sidebar and they have to take my word for it that there's tons of amazing content. There is, but that's an extremely weak marketing position. Especially when people finding me through the SERPs don't know me from Adam.

    -------------------------

And... based on the email I just received back from Ravi, it appears that I can do this with DAP (plus a whole lot more!).

I'll let him know about this thread so he can comment on it the event that I've made any errors, above. I'm still not 100% sure, for example, if my understanding of the "smart" link is correct. I think it is.

And in case you hadn't noticed, I'm really excited about DAP because I've been looking for a solid but flexible membership solution for quite a while now (and read a LOT of threads on this forum and read a LOT of salesletters -- multiple times! -- for different membership site scripts) and I'm happy to report I've found one that does just about everything I can think of... and more!

DigitalAccessPass is totally killer in my opinion!

      @TheNightOwl ,

Thank you for recommending DAP. And for notifying me of this link, so I could come and comment here.

I'm the founder/developer of DAP, and I just wanted to say that what TheNightOwl has said is all correct. DAP very much can do all of those things.

      From TheNightOwl's email:

      (c) a member who is signed in, but doesn't YET have access gets served a DIFFERENT page (or pop-up or whatever) saying "Hold on... access to this one is coming soon!"
Yes, DAP very much allows you to do all of those things.

But just a small note: In the case of (c) above, it's not really a different page, but the same error page with a different error message compared to (a).

So, for those who are still undecided, and wish to compare DAP to the competition, here's something to whet your appetite...

    Heya, Monika

    Very kind of you.

Although this might seem as if I'm "going the hard sell and pushing for an affiliate sale!" ... actually, I'm not.

I don't know what the overall plan for your site is, obviously. "Horses for courses," naturally, and you'll obviously choose whatever is right for you.

The two major deciding factors for me (as to why I went with DAP) are the "Tru-Drip" feature and the inbuilt and integratable (is that even a word? lol) affiliate program.

Wishlist doesn't have the kind of content-drip that I wanted. It only has the "Level 1 access as of this day"-type of content-release, where members get access to all content at that level on Day 1 of that level.

This is no good for me because for a couple of sites I want to create actual courses and have people billed once a month, but only get access to the "Month 1, Week 1" content during the first 7 days, and then "Month 1, Weeks 1 & 2" during the following 7 days, etc.

Also on that note: I found that the way you have to set up the membership levels with Wishlist to achieve the same outcome is more complicated. I'm sure plenty of people do it, but it's too complicated for my liking, needing to create 24 levels for a 6-month course instead of 6 and then protecting each item of content based on days-since-joined.

[Stu, I'm sure you (or one of your users) will correct me if I'm wrong! And if I am, my deepest apologies. I'll come back and edit this post immediately. I'm not trying to misrepresent your product. I've asked questions on the Wishlist Helpdesk and always got fast, polite, informative replies.]

And, (2) as I said, I love the built-in affiliate prog., where all users immediately get signed up as affiliates making it easy for them to promote.

There's a comparison chart on the DAP site here:

Digital Access Pass comparison versus Amember, WP WishList and MemberWing

And a discussion about whether things are being accurately represented, along with various things that users and prospects don't like about DAP.

Now, it's Ravi's blog so he moderates which comments appear, of course, but at this stage it does seem like objections and competitors are being given a fair voice:

      Hey TheNightOwl,

I've totally come to the same conclusions in regards to WL and DAP. Having an affiliate program to boost inbuilt into the software is a huge bonus. In fact, so much so that this alone has sold me on this product - not to mention your comments, lol and of course the drip feature. It's exactly what I'm looking for.

So, you are in luck my friend. True to my word I will purchase using your link. After all, it's only fair - I wish all my readers were that generous, hahahaha...

      Take care and thanks again.

      Mark,

The basic idea behind a membership site, is that it's a walled garden.

      1) Pay to enter, or
      2) Free to enter, pay for premium stuff.
      3) Free everything. Make money with the list.

So, doesn't matter whether your site is powered by WordPress, Joomla, or handcoded HTML. The "membership" concept remains the same.

You need some "extra" code on your site to...

      1) Protect content - blog posts and pages
1A) Protect files - your ebook (PDF), your media (.mp3, .mp4, .flv)
      2) Allow people to sign up for free
      3) Allow people to pay for your content
      4) Allow people to pay one time, or on a monthly basis
      5) Remove access for people who cancel their subscription
      6) Allow people to "login" using an email id and password
      7) Drip content, so that they can't access it all on Day #1
      8) Allow members to promote your site to others, in return for a commission (affiliate program)
      9) Ability to email your members
      ....
      and on and on...

So if you have WordPress powering your site/blog, then you start researching: Ok, so what script should I use to make all of this happen with my existing WordPress site?

That's where the "WP" specific plugins come into the picture.

      Hope this helps.

I use different programs for different sites.

For my big mem\bership site I use WP Member. Simple and efficient script very similar to wishlist.

Secondly on smaller ones I simply use pages and password protect providing the password in emails or all at once depending on if they want to pay up front or monthly.

Lastly I use a plugin called restricted access which allows me to close things down depending on their level of access.

In membership sites I always use pages The Tree plugin making it easy to break up the content.
