Why Do I Have Viagra in My Aweber?

I was checking some Aweber stats today and I noticed one of my lists has many opt-ins from Viagra spammers. They are opting in with the name of "Viagra Brand Store" and "Viagra Best E Store". They are then using what appears to be randomly selected email addresses. Most of the opt-ins have not been confirmed, but a few of them have been.

I plan to call Aweber tomorrow, but was wondering if any of you may have ran into this yourself? Thanks for any help that can be provided.

      Don,

Maybe you have some stiff competition in your niche.

      Don't worry, it'll grow on you...:p

      Just kidding.

Perhaps you are a victim of malicious opt-ins where pranksters are using spam addresses to sign up for your list.

Stranger things have happened. I'd still contact Aweber.

    LMAO.

Yeah I thought maybe a buddy was pranking me or something, but there are many of them in there. I don't think anybody I know would spend their time like that.

Holy cow KJ. I took a peek at your animated video squeeze page site. That is very cool.

Scraping software, or malware on a subscriber's computer, got the list address and have been spamming it. Nothing to worry about. You may want to turn off emailed subscriptions if you don't promote that process. It's not really a big deal, but you may find that it screws up your confirmation rates otherwise.

The confirmations for those are probably confused people whose addresses got used for the spams, and who hit the link thinking they signed up. It's unusual, but it does happen.

Thanks for your response Paul. I am confused by this sentence though. Can you elaborate just a bit?

Turn off emailed subscriptions? Promote what process?

        Thanks

If you don't encourage people to subscribe via email, you may want to turn off the option to sign up that way. I believe Aweber allows that.

If this is email spam hitting your subscribe address, that would stop the things from registering as subscription requests or showing up in your stats. If it's a web form attack, just forget about it. It's not really anything to worry about.

          Hi Don,
I have been having the same problem for about 3 weeks. I called aweber and they said it was probably bots. None of the ones I have confirmed so aweber said they will automatically be deleted after 30 days. I tried to delete them myself but couldn't.

Thanks for your reply Sean. You are correct that I am using the html form. As far as I know the only downside about using the java form is that if a person doesn't have java enabled, then they won't see the form.

This is likely just "Form Bots" searching for contact forms and they thought your squeeze page matched a profile they searched for.

Just delete them and don't worry about it, it's just a pain in the ass when it occurs. One thing you can do to get around this is you have a problem is encode the form in javascript and that stops their profile matching. The form itself offers no SEO value so it is easy to do with no negative effects.

You can encode it here: Webmaster Tips: HTML Code Obfuscator: encode mailto links or arbitrary html code

    All the best
