I am currently using a basic free method to find my keywords, it goes like this:

1. use google adwords keyword tool to plug in the broad keyword.
2. look at searches and competition for that keyword.
3. go to google search and plug in keyword i chose.
4. go to last page of that search and see the true number of results I am competing with on the top google bar. Seems the true number of results only shows up when you get to the last page.
5. my formula is if a lot of searches (5000 or more a month) and fewer than 500 results/pages on google (looking at last google search page) then it seems like a good one to go for?

on a budget so only using free tools right now. any suggestions on drilling down using these tools. quick easy formula.

would like to buy a more automated program, so any suggestions on that would be appreciated.

Market Samurai has a fantastic keyword research tool! I'm not sure if they're still offering the trial version, but it will save you HOURS if you use it properly - it basically does what you've listed but makes it so much easier.

If you don't want to spend any money but want to save some time, I recommend getting the SEO tool for Firefox. It is free and the page I've linked to also gives you a quick tutorial on how to use it.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to contact me!

seo for Firefox is good. i am using the KW research tool under the search box in google. this brings me to seo book keyword research tool which provides lots of links to other keywords tools including all of google's tools.

The way i see it is that the ratio of searches to competing pages quickly gives you the keywords you want or don't want.

Looks like the only way to figure out competing page count is to go to google search for the keyword, go to the last page of the search and then look at the top figure of results.

Is the competing page count anywhere else that is quicker to get to from the seo keyword page that consolidates all this info?

Market Samurai is probably the best. I also use keyword elite but if you are serious about keyword research, get a free trial of market samurai and you will be amazed at how much it can do for you. The only problem with it that i dont really like is that it is a little slow at times.

You can use Firefox seoquake plugin to see the amount of backlinks that a particular site has. That will be useful in analysing the competition. You can get an idea about how strong the sites that are appearing on first few pages of the search results for your keyword. Then you can decide whether to go with it or not.

    Hello,

I'm kinda confused on tip #4...
...Go to last page of that search and see the true number of results I am competing with on the top google bar?

    Can someone explain it.

    Thanks for your time.

I would have to agree with Market Samurai on this one. Been using it over one year now and it has got me so many top rankings within Google.

You can download a free 12 day trial from their website.

PS - I analyse my keywords through Keyword Blueprint first of all before progressing onto Market Samurai

I am finding the last page (item #4) results theory is maybe flawed? I am testing it now but I am seeing the results on page 1 of google showing 2,000,000 results for a keyword and then going to the last page and seeing 450. that cannot be right. anyone else have experience with this?

I started using trial of market samurai last night, also tried traffic travis. Market Samurai is very good. I will try keyword blueprint now.
