My first offline client - from an unlikely source!

For the past few months, I've been working with a legitimate credit-repair agency because I've had some past credit issues. We've gotten pretty chatty and banter back and forth about my credit, and other stuff, including what I'm planning on doing for a living when I'm finally able to get a mortgage and move to the country.

Well yesterday he tells me he's been doing some snooping around and he's Googled my name.... because he wants to hire me to do his company's website SEO and he also wants me to create a larger online presence for them! How awesome is that?

Just goes to show ya that clients are everywhere!

ETA: Oh jeez, I almost forgot the most exciting part! He heads up a weekly small-business meeting in his area and has already talked about promoting my services at these meetings!

Ah Ha! Good job! You never know where your next client will come from. As a marketer, you always have to keep your eyes open for the next opportunity that comes up and it might be fro the most unlikely places.

    Congratulations on your client!

Also even better that he is going to promote you
at his meetings. My dad isn't what you would
consider a business man but he did give me good
advice once(sorta) and that was " If you shake someones
hand and leave a good impression then it's just like
shaking hands with everyone they've ever shook
    hands with"

You should have heard his birds and the bees talk. Haha

Congrats Lisa! It's always nice to gain unexpected business, but it sounds like he has a lot of contacts that could be even more lucrative in the long run. Good job, kiddo.

Congrats! I was introduced to this video and I think it gives incredible advice to use a circle of influence to help bolster your lead. It's an hour something long and if you don't have time to watch it all just go to the 1 hr mark and then watch about the next 20 mins of the video. Your situation is perfect for implementing this strategy.

Congrats! This just goes to show that when you are involved in offline marketing you always have to realize the potential of this particular business model. A lot of times I just gradually mention to business owners that I am an online marketing consultant, and they are immediately interested.

I then go on to tell them that I help offline businesses establish a greater online presence, etc. and often times I come out of a casual meeting with a formal appointment. I have gotten several clients this way.

Trust me, just be personable with each and every business that you visit on a routine basis, and you will always be able to get new clients!

Congratulations Lisa - a good first client can lead to an influx of new clients with no promotion on your part.

    Best of luck.

Hey thanks everyone! I didn't even realize this thread had so many responses!

He says he wants to wait until his website is redone before I start promoting it, but I told him it's not an overnight process. I told him I'll do some promo on it now to slowly build it up and then when he has the site redone, he can start paying me. I've researched some of his competition and it's WEAK. YAY!

Be very careful with this one. Hopefully it's a completely genuine promise but it's something I've seen people caught out with over and over again.

"If you do this one for me then you'll get lots more business"

And then they try to negotiate a low, completely unreasonable or non-existent fee for the service.

There is nothing wrong with charging lower fees to start with to build up some nice social proof but if he has come to you then he recognises the skills and should be willing to pay appropriately. If he's not then he'll be an absolute pain to work with almost guaranteed.

Don't mean to be a nay-sayer, that's absolutely great news for you. Just a pattern I've seen repeat many times and wanted to give you a heads up.

    Andy

Gotcha, Andy. Actually, since we've been working closely for a few months, he knows me well enough to know it would be very bad for him to try to low-ball me. He knows I'm a no BS kinda gal. LOL
