It doesn't solve a problem... The problem is completely fake in the first place, its just making money off of a hoax.

Hmmm, I wonder if I can market a "2013.. the jokes on you!" ebook?? (I'm joking!!)

The topic makes for a great movie, but that's about it.. people will believe what they want.

And that's right its sad, gives IM another black eye.. but there must be a niche in it thou to have someone trying to market it..

There are many shady things out there which pray on the weakness of others, there are some religious products, talking to the dead, getting rid of stuff which isn't a problem It's a shame, stuff like that makes IM look bad.

Yeah, the world will end 4 days from now. That statement I just made has just as much facts behind it as the 2012 statement.

I'm a little disappointed in you, Michael. Look at all the words I typed in my post above yours trying to inject a little humor. The you come along and post a measly 18 words and your post is funnier than mine by far.

I should correct myself, it really doesn't reflect on IM as a whole.. Fear Mongering (what I call it) has been in Marketing it seems since day one...

The latest fear(s) were of the H1N1 flu, its really not that different than the regular flu only this one was geared towards pigs.. H1N5 is the bird flu which made its grand appearance a few years ago..

I see aerosol disinfectant product is capitalizing on this too, saying it can help reduce the spread of H1N1..

So what really is the difference...

It reminds me of the old 'duck and cover' drills we did back in the Cold War days in elementary school...

When the alarm sounded, we were to crawl under our desks, cover our heads with our hands, and put our heads between our legs. Somehow, this was supposed to protect us in the event Lowell Elementary got nuked. I later learned that they left out the last step:

"If this had been a real nuclear attack, the next step is to kiss your ass goodbye..."

On a side note, that style is distinctive enough, I'll bet I know who the copywriter is. Or at least who the copywriter learned from...

If you are going to claim anything, you should be able to back it up with facts, otherwise, its a pointless claim and holds no merit. The only reason why this came about is because of the film.

Wasn't the year 2000 'also' suppose to be the end of the world, But did it?

^ As Nostradamus + others predicted.

The film 2012 was made to propagandise + scare everybody more.

Actually, Nostradamus predicted the end of the world to be in the year 3797. We've got a ways to go to see if he's right.

Isn't this the same kind of conspiracy-theorist mentality that most of the people who believe the whole 2012 scare have?

The movie wasn't made to scare anybody. They were just in it for the cash.

At some point, we have to allow stupid, gullible people to "buy" some experience. I remember all too well how exasperated I got when my own mother called me in 1999 wanting my advice on time-share survival bunkers. (Yes, *REALLY*).

Fortunately, I talked her off the cliff of hysteria. She has since learned to take "expert" opinions with a fist full of salt.

But some folks will NEVER learn, thus ensuring the long-term continuity of the FUD market (Fear Uncertainty Doubt).

For the Darwinists out there, you'll appreciate this description of unevolved suckers...

A biologist friend of mine calls them "Eddies in the Gene Pool". As in slow, backwater currents.

This is where the creators of the 2012 movie got some of their info... There are now about 20 or so 2012 books in Barns & Nobles. There is one on 2013 as well... Movie goers could have watched this and saved their $8

It's because that's when the Mayan calender ends. The Mayan calender is the most accurate calender in human history (it's more than just days and months). It has supposedly predicted many things that have already come to pass. I've never researched it though, that's just what people say. I figured the Mayans just got tired of making a calender that was already hundreds of years into the future.

It's actually been a hot topic for years, not in mainstream media, but in alternative media.

2012 is going to happen. Immediately after that 2013 will happen, closely followed by 2014. If my sources are correct, several years will follow that in succession.

People have been predicting the end of the world for thousands of years. For $10 I'll send you PROOF that everyone one of them have been wrong. For another $10 I'll guarantee you 2012 isn't the end of the world. If I'm wrong I'll refund every penny you paid!

Hurry, hurry, hurry step right up! See the prognosticators skin the gullible LIVE, right before your very eyes! Bring your family! Bring your friends! Bring a dummy and watch his eyes grow BIG!

LOL - I wonder how the person selling this has managed to determine which predictions are confirmed FACTS. Seems to me a confirmed fact has to have happened already. How can a future event be a confirmed fact?

And yet, people will fall for it. I'm thinking of writing my own 2012 book. It will be one page in length and say, "Stop wasting your money on stupid things."

Think I'd have a high refund rate?

The point is that it doesn't have to happen. It will only happen if we allow it to happen. If we work together, we can petition the governments of the world to skip 2012. We'll simply go from December 31, 2011 to January 1, 2013 at the stroke of midnight. Then we can rest assured with a 100% guarantee that the world will not end in 2012.

Problem solved. We just need the collective will to do it.

LOL-this suggestion reminds me of an equally effective strategy that people employed pretty widely for a while-skipping the 13th floor when constructing tall buildings to avoid the bad luck the dreaded #13 might bring. There are still plenty of buildings standing that go straight from 12 to 14-when I first learned that, it cracked me up-are we silly or what?

If you see all your money evapoarte out of your accounts then you'll know you're not compliant for 2012.

George, not that I condone this sort of crap, but open up a National
Enquirer or a Weekly World News or any of those other rag papers any day
of the week, and you'll see the exact same thing.

This sort of "journalism" and "sales tactic" has been going on since before
the Internet. Maybe you recall some of the old books that got sold back
in the 60s through these rags. They covered everything from how to find
gold in your backyard to how to defend yourself against an attack from Mars.

There's nothing new here my friend.

It's the same old thing in a different package.

    George:

Thanks for sharing this. people have been led astray at so many times I know the JW's have been predicting the end of the world for over 1 hundred years it always amazes me they even exist now but that goes to show what the mentality of folks is. The world is going to begin to undergo some huge problems and indeed is already beginning but the end is not yet.

so when I see things like this it just goes to show me that people will do anything to make a buck. y2k was the biggest hoax there was I never went and bought anything but I marvelled at the effect it had on people. I would however like to make on statement being as this is turning into a what if" what if the bible which is being fulfilled every single day as we live and breath is correct? what if Jesus exists and what the bible says will happen really is and does happen?

Who are the "JW's"-the "Jeans Wearers"?

I'm going to get serious for a moment. If we're honest, part of the reason we like to laugh at these ridiculous predictors of doom, is that we're trying to feel better about the fact that we really are living on a knife's edge, and the unthinkable annihilation of humanity becomes more likely all the time, as we keep on finding more clever ways to engineer it.

Instead of trying to predict the future, whether to scare or reassure ourselves, we ought to take measures to increase our chances of survival, by working hard to reduce threats we have some influence on, like global hostilities, threats to clean water, disappearing farmland, attacks on the gene pool by the insane engineering of new life forms, the continued proliferation of nuclear weapons, greenhouse gases, etc. Most of us don't think about it on a daily basis, but nuclear catastrophe looms bigger than it ever did when everyone was worried about it, during the Reagan escalation of the cold war. Every day we're at risk for either an accidental nuclear exchange that could easily prove fatal, or just as deadly, one that starts as a result of hostilities.

I hope you're right that the end is "not yet", but for the sake of kids if not ourselves, we better act as if our survival is under multiple, serious threats, because that's reality.

Imagine...tens of thousands of people probably are in fear of this. The counting is drawing near. There is only a few weeks left. These people begin selling off their belongings to raise money for one last wild spree...to live a few precious weeks like a king.

I'm seeing a huge market opening up for someone with capital to buy cheap property and luxury items. I'm seeing another huge market opening up for products that prepare people for the end, such as games to play in the last hours, what to say to your loved ones as the end draws near, how to prepare for heaven, and so on.

Man, I'm licking my chops already.

I dont understand why everyone is so bent out of shape about this?

Is it any different to bomb shelters? The big tubs of dehydrated food you get? "apocalypse" ready water filters? They sell this stuff to people who are worried about a nuclear war.

Is there any scientific evidence that we will be bombed with a nuke? No. But it could happen. That is why people buy this stuff.

Plus, anyone that finds this site is probably looking for it in the first place. Except for the op, who might of been doing niche research or something.

So who cares, if someone wants to learn about how to survive a post apocalyptic world, let em.

Its no different than books that show you how to protect against vampires, zombies or how to ward of demons. Again no scientific evidence of any of them, but people still like it.

They use the same tactic: protect yourself. That is what these kind of people like.

Well, I'd have to say the threat of nuclear war is a whole lot greater than the threat of a vampire, or zombie attacks-since nuclear weapons actually do exist, and destroyed 2 cities during wartime. Science can't predict the future, so obviously there's no "scientific" evidence that we "will be" bombed, or that any other specific future will take place.

But you're fooling yourself if you think the nuclear threat is a scam. Increasing #s of weapons scattered through a world rife with hostilities and with a long history of wars that generally took advantage of the latest, deadliest weapons make it a matter of grave concern, even in the absence of a scientific equivalent of a crystal ball. Not to mention the fact that the country which has always had the most nukes, has actually threatened others with them an a number of occasions, and the treaty every major power signed promising to reduce and work toward their elimination, has not only been ignored-we've spread them.

No, the bomb shelter scam wasn't based on spreading fear of a false threat-the threat is real enough, and bad enough. The scam was selling the shelter as a solution-they actually underplayed the horror of the hideous aftermath in order to make the shelter seem like a good hedge. The only viable solution to the threat is to do away with it-and we've been sold the idea that it isn't realistic to do that-so you better figure out how to survive. If humans can't remove a threat to themselves that's entirely human produced, what business do we have worrying about external threats?

There's been only one sane (not to mention decent) course for humanity since the nuclear age dawned-every functioning, intelligent person on earth needs to be a peace activist, and demand that all governments live up to the Non-Proliferation Treaty-and eliminate this obscenity from the planet. As long as we're pointing missiles at each other and making threats, we might as well call ourselves mass murderers of children-not just the children of the present, but all future generations as well. Actually, conventional wars make mass murderers of all of us, but the nuclear war would scale it up to the point where the adults alive now could take credit for the murder of the entire human race, along with other species as well. (Not that anyone will be left to judge, but we ought to feel pretty guilty in advance, if we accept and fail to fight such a threat)

You missed my point entirely. I wasnt saying that the threat of a nuclear attack is a scam?? C'mon, if anything that is the most worrisome of world disasters.

I am merely pointing out that none of them, whether it be zombies vampires, alien invasions, can be scientifically proven to happen in the near future. People want to be prepared for things, some are strange some are logical, like nuclear war.

Also, just like the two cities you mentioned, destroyed by nuclear war, what about the various asteroids that have changed our planet in the past? Planet effecting changes.

I am not saying that any of them are scams, just that you cant treat people who prepare for a nuclear war and differently than those that prepare for a 2012 doomsday.

That is a fair clarification, (which was lacking in the post I responded to), but I still think you're wrong on a couple points, and I don't see why the only thing you say you were "merely pointing out" needs pointing out at all-the fact that science can't predict the future with certainty is understood by everyone, but that doesn't put all attempts to prepare for it on an equal footing. And what I'd say to a person who's preparing for the 2012 doomsday would be totally different that what I'd say to someone who's preparing for nuclear war-so in that sense, I'd "treat" them differently, and rightly so.

I'd probably suggest to the 2012 doomsday fan that they ought to come back to earth and apply their brains to problems that actually exist. What I'd say to the survivalist is that, while their anxiety is understandable, the survivalist mindset couldn't be more wrong (nor antisocial), and that if we don't do our utmost to prevent it, then our second best option is just to embrace a quick death, because you'd be insane to want to live in the hell that we'd have created.

As far as asteroids are concerned, what about them? It's silly to worry about remote threats you have no control over, especially when there are lots of immediate, pressing, and deadly threats (mostly human made) you can do plenty to avert.

Also, people really are silly to be preparing for such things as zombie attacks or 2012 doomsday, and it has nothing to do with them not being "scientifically proven to happen in the near future", and everything to do with the fact that they are failing to distinguish between fantasy and reality.

Applying your "provable future" standard, one wouldn't prepare for much of anything in life, since science so far lacks the ability to predict the future. No event in human history could have been "scientifically proven to happen in the near future", yet the Jews who left Nazi Germany prior to the mass extermination were acting quite rationally in retrospect-and I'm sure there are thousands of such instances, to say nothing of millions of individual daily events such as avoiding violent people, because they'll likely repeat past behavior.

All is not what it seems and this guy isn't unethical at all. He's telling it like it is from his own perspective. If he belives all the stuff then all that he has written from what I see is correct. Although judging by what he has learned he won't have the answers to guaranteed survival. No-one will, except NASA and the idea of heading to the moon to live. There's limited spaces available up there though.

GeorgeR ... There are many sales letters that are unethical in my opinion but yet many marketers still continue to do it day in and day out ...

Look at all the myths about dup content, page ranks, domain age, use many different ip's for sites, no follow and do follow.. And the list goes on and on .... I do not see any post about all this unethical marketing.

The world may end or it may not end, nobody and I do mean nobody can say for sure either way... There are post here claiming it's a joke and it will not happen but I see no proof of that. My point is though nobody can say for 100% that it will end or not...

The huge difference is those myths that many marketers keep on spouting off about to sell junk products can be proven they are myths..

Usually it's more ignorant marketing than unethical. Some people read one or a few things stating the same thing and the whole social proof thing goes to work and they take it as fact. I see a lot of that in this forum.

I agree to an extent, yes many do pass on these myths and many post them on this forum as facts. Still to me the ones that market products this way and they claim to be a "marketer" (just because you claim it does not make it true) are doing unethical methods to make money.

Yep, it's not necessarily unethical - depending on what the product actually says.

If it's about disaster preparedness, then cool. People should be prepared, even if the author is using 2012 to get people to take notice. At least when they're done reading the guide they will be more prepared for real-life emergencies.

Of course, that's a big IF.

If you look around, there are tons of forums on this hot topic long before the movie came out. All he's doing is summarising the information and advice into ebook form (good to know topics generally such as survival).

To me, this is no different than the guy who discovered there was money to be made out of "how to build a chicken coop". He found a niche that had not yet been properly commercialised and he turned it into a success.

This 2012 guy is not selling false information. His book details a belief held by many. If you have a problem with this then you should also have a problem with people selling the Bible, the Koran or any religious text. Personally, I don't have a problem with it.

In a way, it's ironic that this is getting attention here on a marketing forum. Because there are also so many marketers who believe in the BS Law of Attraction which is really no different to a belief system.

btw check out the leading 2012 product on CB. The guy uses an opt-in list and converts it very well. Anyone can learn something from his techniques alone.

If the product itself is just selling basic survival techniques, which are
always good to know, I have no problem with the product either. If it's a
bunch of voodoo (cover yourself with garlic and have a gun with a silver
bullet under your bed) then I have a real problem with it.

What I do have a problem with, regardless, is taking advantage of fears
that are not based in any reality. It's not like this guy is selling a book on
how to prevent your home from being broken into, which is a real
possibility. He's selling a "survival guide" based on something that is, for
most rational people, laughable. Yes, I know there are people who believe
in this stuff and are literally scared sh*tless about it, but let's be real
    here...

If the world is going to end...NOBODY is getting out alive.

Now, if you want to sell a book on where these beliefs come from and
things like that, I have no problem with that. The entertainment industry
has made a fortune off of 2012.

But please, let's not equate this with real problems like world hunger,
pollution, collapsing economies and bad TV.

This is just nonsense that some people have decided to turn into a
    "definitely gonna happen" disaster.

And again, if it DOES happen (and nobody here knows the future) then
it's not going to matter WHAT book you get.

You are NOT getting out of Armageddon alive.

That's my 2 cents on this subject, for whatever it's worth.

If you're determined to discover the confirmed FACTS about 2012

...how can there be "confirmed facts" regarding what will happen in 2012? It's impossible. Nothing that is predicted to happen in 2012 can be confirmed until it happens in 2012.

Is cashing in on the end of the world any worse than promising instant profits through working at home?

      • A comet crashes into earth causing a debris cloud that blocks out the sun for several years, killing off crops and causing starvation and worldwide freezing.
      • Massive solar flares cause radiation damage to plants, animals, and us.
      • Nuclear war/nuclear winter.
      • Planet Niburu (also called Planet X) passes too close to Earth, disrupting the gravitational field and causing havoc.
      • Alien invasion - some say to enslave us, some say to rescue us from ourselves.
      • A race living underground in a hollow Earth will resurface to reclaim the planet.
      • World War III causes more death than any other time in human history.
      • Worldwide health pandemic destroys human life.
      • One world government takes control and enslaves most of the world population.
      • The Earth shifts on it's axis, causing massive earthquakes, volcano eruptions, etc.
      • Jesus comes back to rescue the saved while Satan takes over Earth.
It ain't all bad though, there are a couple positive predictions...
      • Earth enters into a new age, bringing enlightenment to humankind.
      • Humankind enters into a more spiritual stage of our evolution, bringing peace, cooperation, enlightenment.

Every time there's a thread like this, there are those who defend the marketing tactic simply because it was targeted at nitwits and wackos ... those lacking the intelligence to know when they are being scammed.

These are people who obviously think that anything goes in marketing as long as there is a buck to be made. Well, it simply isn't true. Ethical marketing is the responsibility of those who market goods to ANY type of market, the poor, the stupid, the dreamers alike.

Trying to justify your lack of ethics simply because someone is stupid enough to buy it, just doesn't wash. It also doesn't wash with the FTC.

The fear of dying from the world ending
    The fear of public speaking
