Do people on this forum ever make you madder than a cat falling into a swimming pool?

Someone says or does something here on the forum, on a blog or elsewhere. Instantly you get that seething flash of anger. Cheeks hot. Seeing red. All ready to play "keyboard cowboy" and type off the nastiest, snarkiest reply you can think of.

Wait, hold up there cowboy or cowgirl. Take a deep breath. Again. And back away from the keyboard.

Let's look at the emotions that cause these kind of knee-jerk reactions. Usually it's some form of anger and/or jealousy.

Did the person that made you mad jump out of your screen and bloody your nose?

Nah, I didn't think so. And I bet if you look really close, you'll realize that the person didn't personally attack you. In a lot of cases, the post that got you riled up probably didn't even have anything to do with you!

Am I right?

So, what got you so hopping mad then?

Just this: Your brain is sending you a big ol' signal that you're NOT currently doing what you're supposed to do or what you really want to do. And you're going to keep being a heart attack waiting to happen until you start doing it.

Consider these examples:

1. Newbie Joe Blow posts on the forum that he made $100 this month. Instead of congratulating him and feeling good for his achievements (or just ignoring him), you snark about how he's a small thinker who's getting way too excited about a small achievement.

Hmmm -- maybe you're just upset that you haven't yet made YOUR first $100? Sounds like you're really mad at yourself, but Joe Blow sure makes a nice target.

2. Suzy Awesomewriter puts out a WSO product on the same topic you've been thinking about doing. You get pissed off. You start hating Suzy. You tell yourself your book would be MUCH better. And you find yourself sniping and making little "digs" at Suzy every chance you get.

Hmm -- maybe you're just upset because you've thought of doing this same book for MONTHS... but you haven't taken action? Sounds like you're really mad at yourself, but Suzy sure makes a nice target.

3. News spreads around that Marketer Mitch just had a $250,000 product launch. You get pissed because you have a similar product that is much better than Marketer Mitch's product. How come HE made so much money? So you join the current "hate the guru" thread that rips on Mitch. Feels good to be snarky and mean.

Hmmmm -- maybe you're just upset that you didn't take the massive action and preparation required to have your own big six-figure product launch. Sounds like you're really mad at yourself, but being mean to Mitch just feels so good.

***

Bottom line: Next time you feel that flash of anger or twinge of jealousy, figure out why. It has nothing to do with the other person. It's all about YOU.

Use your anger as a signal to guide you to a better, more productive path. Use it to become a better marketer... and a better person.

Cheers,
Becky

Paul, it's true that people say things on forums that they wouldn't say to someone's face -- especially when emotions run high. If you (general you, not Paul) are about to post something in anger, it's time to walk away and cool down. First, figure out why something on a forum is making you angry. And second, don't come back to post until you've cooled down.

          Which reminds me...

Craig, BIG Mike would have never dared say that to my face. He knows I'd wrestle him to the ground and take his beer away. With one hand tied behind my back.

    Hi guys

yes i think we all have this feeling from time to time.

I posted a thread last year (well around christmas time) talking about how someone had started a dispute on paypal with me less than 12 hours after purchase and paid during my night time.

I then got a private message from a wf member telling me 20 different ways how i could get revenge and made me more mad with them than the person i was complaining about in the first place!!!

    kind regards

Thanks all for the replies. I appreciate them and you.

This thread reminds me of when John Reese put out his Blog Rush widget thingy. Lots of folks jumped on him and said it would never work. And plenty of those folks who said that were snarky and mean about it.

As it turns out, they were right. It didn't quite work out the way JR planned.

      HOWEVER...

John Reese is rich exactly because he takes risks. They don't always pan out. But he's out there playing the game every day. And he went on to make oodles and oodles of cash after the BR project.

On the flip side, what are all those snarky armchair marketers doing? That's right, they are still sitting on the sidelines, still being snarky, still broke because they can't get anything off the ground. Meanwhile, they take great delight in watching others fall on their nose.

Just something to think about (especially if any of you reading this likes to snark and guru bash... but you find your own bank account a bit thin).

      Cheers,
      Becky

It's amazing how many times I've wanted to send an email, write a letter and so forth defending myself, getting angry - whatever.

But to do it right away? BIG mistake. I usually take a mandatory 2 or 3 day break before approaching the "angry reply" when writing a long letter. Why? Because it's exactly like you said Becky. In fact, it's downright embarrasing how true it is (or at least how true it's been for me).

What's funny, and provides a lot more chagrin and humility is when I used to write my scathing reply and then sit on it. (Oh boy, I think I left a door open)

Now I skip the first draft before waiting, but when I used to feel I had to write in response to someone (family, email to a friend) I'd write and then try to cool down for that day or two.

Woah, those letters were funny. I said so much junk that didn't even make sense. Mostly because it was written as I was thinking it.

    Very embarrassing.

And man did I sound like an idiot. You ramble, you curse (actually, I don't curse, but I come close "darn you!" I know it doesn't have the same effect, but I can't bring myself to swearing) and you do way more harm than good.

Not to wander too far off topic, but people are way to quick to send off a letter to stores or companies that "screwed" them and want them to know it - but very slow to reward a place with a glowing letter when service demands it.

But they do a LOT of good - for you and the provider. But that's another story. (I love to let people know how much I appreciated their product or service.)

Anyway, if you do reply (on a forum like this) and you just have to make that point, wait a while. Think about it.

Think about it. Because you'll do much more good by letting yourself cool down (like Becky said) and come back with a much more consice reply making your points with far less of the kinds of emotion that could embarrass you.

Note - I did write this in one go, so it may not be that consice. Sorry.

...but people are way to quick to send off a letter to stores or companies that "screwed" them and want them to know it - but very slow to reward a place with a glowing letter when service demands it.

In most cases, it's a pure emotional response. You get "screwed," you get mad, you have a knee-jerk reaction. This reaction might involve yelling at the clerk, calling customer service with angry words or putting your nastiness down in writing via email.

      Now think about this...

The positive emotion reaction often happens right before the point of sale. If the vendor does a good job of selling, they evoke a positive emotional response that leads directly to the sale.

For example, someone contemplating buying a treadmill starts imagining just how good they'll feel when they lose all the weight, fit into their skinny jeans and get a date every Saturday night. (And you can bet they're NOT thinking about sweating and huffing and puffing on that equipment every night.)

Bam -- the "knee jerk" response is to push the "buy" button in response to their emotional high.

Indeed, that moment is often the peak of those happy "buying" emotions. From there they start to go down. And so a person doesn't think to write a glowing letter of review, because their highest emotion was evoked just prior to them hitting the buy button.

That's not true in every case, of course, as sometimes sellers can evoke a negative emotion like fear to get the sale. But you see what I'm saying.

      cheers,
      Becky

It's always so nice and classy to personally attack a competitor. That says a lot about the product creator if they have to jump on the bash train to sell their product. Funny thing is, that person is probably just jealous cause he's not looked at as a "guru" in the forum.
