What about the self-improvement niche?

by Dayne Dylan 14 replies
Do you think creating a content site on self-improvement that would involve subjects like...positive thinking, self-realization, meditation, etc. would be hard to actually be successful in? The reason I ask is because there seems to be so many of them.

I was thinking of doing this simply because I have interest in the area, I read all the books, and it speaks to me.

I was thinking of monetizing with...

*Affiliate links/products
*E-Reports on certain subjects within the niche (say $19.95)
*Possibly Adsense but I'm not sure on this yet. Not sure about losing viewers just to make a few cents a click.

I know it is a strong market with plenty of things to promote. I'm just wondering if it will be really hard to get into to have any kind of success.

Thoughts? Ideas?

It's one of my favourite niches... I stumbled into it on my own personal journey and suddenly realised I had enough knowledge to gatecrash the positivity party and make some fat commissh..

Don't think ANY niche is beyond you dude... maybe a little Anthony Robbins will get you feeling ten feet tall, eh?..

Honestly.. go for it, physical sales and seminars (which happen to pay well on high ticket) do really well

    Peace

Thanks Jay, if you have some ideas of high converting, high ticket items for this niche please email me. I'm in the planning stages at this point and I want to have a solid list of at least 10 things I can promote with a proven track record.

Join the Nightingale-Conant affiliate program. Lots
      of top-notch products.

For seminars look at Peak Potentials and the Christopher
Howard Companies. Robbins probably has an affiliate
      program too.

Yes, I believe it's through either CJ or Pepperjam Network. Not sure if he has one directly through his websites. Brian Tracy has one also.

And to Dayne, just look at Steve Pavlina. He gets some ridiculous amount of traffic every month writing about wierd self-improvement topics and he came out of nowhere just a few years ago. It might be easier to get your foot in the door by focusing on a specific niche within your niche, like goal-setting and motivation, or visualization, etc.

        Good luck!

Thanks for that Loren! I've been in this niche for some time and have been scratching my head as to why there weren't more high quality products out there. I was just looking in the wrong place.

You may have just completely changed my business in a good way.

        Thanks!

    Hey Dayne,

A word of advice. The self-improvement niche is HUGE. I have bought many of these products over the years. But there has been a new twist to this genre over the past few years. It is the "Airy-Fairy", Occultish type of products that I find just too out there for me.

Sure, there are some rabid crazies that really go for this kind of material, and you could target them, but I think I fall into the majority of consumers who want something based in real world actionable instruction.

You lose me when the instruction is para-normal type mumbo jumbo, like "turn in a circle 3 times and chant to the goddess of the green light..."

PO-LEEEASE!!! I shut down when the approach is this other-worldly style.
If this is the type of info you want to include in your offerings, then do yourself a favor and "tone down" that kind of presentation and try to tie it to some real world experience.

    Example:

I read a lot. And when I come across a book that is "Fantacy" of Sci-Fi based, sometimes the "believability alarm" goes off in my head and I question if I really want to continue reading. The incongruientcies that can only be explained by "It's fantacy or Sci-Fi" tend to cause me to lose interest. (This goes for movies, as well). But, if that book or movie can tie it into real life examples, where I can see that it "could" be plausable, then I'm hooked, and will give myself fully to the premise. Stephen King comes to mind for this. He is a master of being able to get the plausability factor high. I think that is why he is so popular.

I'm not sure I stating this clearly, but bottom line. There is a majority of people that will need something grounded in reality. Then again the "Airy-Fairy" approach could be a very strong Sub-Niche.

    Just my thoughts,

    Adam

DO WHAT YOU THINK AND THINK WHAT YOU DO!

just Lead with your heart, ofcourse their will be problems and tough times but you have to cross all the hurdles to attain your goals and get success.

I've never heard of Steve Pavlina. I will have to check him out.

As far as your idea of a niche within a niche, I think you are correct. The more focused the better. What I may have to do is break the site down into 3 core areas. My personal interests and passion are in: mindfulness/zen, freedom from anxiety/fear, and self actualization.

Out of those 3, I think the anxiety/fear angle would be easier to build around from a financial angle, for the simple fact that it's addressing a specific need (and an urgent one for some people). Obviously that's just my opinion.

    Dayne,

Have you take the plunge? If so, how is it working? I have been selling in the self improvement area for a little over a year mostly affiliate products with some up and down results but not much consistency. PM if you want to share ideas.

I've got a niche blog on a subset of this niche and yes, it's new-age-ish. It's monetized with Adsense and is a solid $1 a day earner. If I threw more time into it I could probably make more with an eBook and list but it's not a niche that I have a lot of personal interest in so I just let it plug away essentially on auto-pilot.

Only if you can create some of your own products that you'll sell, and a popular blog. Think Steve Pavlina and ZenHabits.

Also, give some practical advice that people can put into action, most of self-improvement sites are too fluff and too philosophical.
