Will Somebody Please Spread the Word That Twitter Is Not For This

Will somebody please spread the word that twitter is not for total strangers to just post link after link after link of products that you hope I will, for some reason, click on?

It was meant for micro blogging...not micro spamming.

And, those automatic direct messages that are automatically sent to me when I follow you...Do you really think you are fooling anyone into thinking you wrote me a personal message?

I agree 100%. Twitter has become a spammers paradise. A lot of marketers are having great success, buth you do get some who just send out message after message. Comes with the territory...

would somebody tell people to stop clicking those spam links and buying the products being spammed?

    otherwise it will never stop

It is usually not the marketers that just do spammy stuff, it is because people respond to spammy stuff that the marketers do it.

The funny thing is some very big names are doing what you say is wrong. I don't use twitter, I just signed up to see what it was all about and everyone on my email list I suddenly "followed" and many of them followed me. I still don't understand what twitter is all about, but I do know I get tons of the kind of messages you are calling "spam."

Thanks for the heads up on this.

Can't you unfollow the person? That's what I did with someone like that. Then you don't see their tweets in your list anymore.

Let Twitter police itself. If TPTB at Twitter don't like it, they canstart shutting down accounts. If they don't then whatever happens serves them right.

You don't base your biz model on USER generated content and not expect marketers to go wild. You have to keep an eye on that stuff.

BTW- it ain't spam. You CHOSE to follow those people. Unfollow if YOU made a bad choice.

    I certainly don't.

Yes you get spam on twitter - WOW!!

Twitter is the kingdom of spam, and if their true figures minus the bots was actually shown, you would find it is pretty deserted.

You cannot communicate anything meaningful, in any way in a sentence or less.

If they expanded the tweet character count to 500 characters it would be a whole new game. As it is, its for link dropping.

I spam the hell out of twitter because I don't expect anyone to read it, but rather because I get lots of back links.

Before anyone says twitter is "nofollow" don't forget there are thousands of sites that display tweets mentioning certain keywords and they aren't "nofollow"

I have seen tweets in other niches I am in that have ranked on the first page of Google for their keyword.

So twitter does have some clout with the search engines. (well at least with Google)

      Was an obscure niche.

My twitter account is #2 for my offline biz. It pushed my main site, which has been around for 6 years, to #4.

So yeah, I think there's potential benefit, but definitely not the way most people are using it.

No. I know people who use it as it was intended.

I also know of famous people using it correctly to promote themselves. Look at UKs Coach for an example.

Or how Selena Gomez used it to have a meet and greet w/ fans by giving clues to the location.

You cannot communicate anything meaningful, in any way in a sentence or less.
      Really? You just did.

It could also be used to tell a group of friends that dinner is at 8 instead of 7 or what movie to meet at.

See, if used correctly it is great. You know if you have FRIENDS and forward it to your cell.

I spam the hell out of twitter because I don't expect anyone to read it, but rather because I get lots of back links.
No. You do because you're a worthless spammer that tries to call himself a marketer.

I'd agree with you that Twitter has become more valuable as a source of backlinks than for product promotion, especially if you're in the IM field...LOL.

It's devolved into spam central, especially if you're in the IM space, as everyone and his brother is using some kind of Twitter tool to follow others and send out automated spam, and I truly think the majority of people in this niche don't bother to read their Twitter streams and DMs anymore!

You'd be surprised once you get rid of the Twitter spammers you're following and just follow people who interest you or blogs that interest you that the spam disappears magically.

Internet Marketers spam Twitter. I never use automation to follow people anymore after all the work of unfollowing them manually. I never thought that I would enjoy Twitter because all I saw was the spam.

Now I read Twitter for a bit every night. There's quite a few blogs that covers news that isn't in the mainstream media that is very interesting for a news junkie like myself.

True, for news and networking purposes especially, Twitter can be a fun and productive tool.

As long as you stay away from the IM niche, Twitter can be quite entertaining and informative. I feel that who you follow is the real key to determining how good an experience you have on there.

While you are at it you could tell all those that have that twitter software to help you spam and all those that have those ebooks and video junk products that tell you to spam, to stop selling their stuff ....

Twitter is a spam fest, yep ... it is because that is what most wannabe marketers understand to be marketing. When something hot comes out marketers go running to see how much they can do SpaMarketing on the site and then create ebooks and software to sell to tell everyone else how to do SpaMarketing...

To some it is useful while others it is useless... If you do not like the spam then start un-following people and block them, its that simple...

I do not follow anyone without a real name anymore and I do not read DM's at all nor do I send DM's..

    Hi guys

i remember a year ago i was crazy for twitter but with all the time i spend with blocking spammers it has totally lost its spark.

I have a higher than average following which means spammers target me a lot more than everyone else because they believe using my username will suddenly get them a lot more sales!!!

However i have found that the list feature on twitter is an amazing tool as it means that all the people you love chatting to on twitter you can put together in one place and the spammers cant get in!!!

    kind regards

I thought the idea was to make money from marketing. My mistake, I now realize the idea is to spend days slowly talking people into each sale over a period of days.

    One sentence at a time.

Seems like a slow marketing plan to me....but whatever works for you.

Its funny how I am apparently the only person spamming twitter, as last time I looked on there, there was huge amount of obvious spam....not just from me.

Hey I will admit that I gave spamming the $hit out of Twitter a try. I got a few backlinks and about 14K hops to Clickbank. ZERO sales lol. Could probably take the time to optimize and do it better, but I'd rather use other methods.

Hey, sure, jamawebinc, I'll just set up a, um, series of automated tweets about it right now. Y'know the kind that get repeated by my bot at various times throughout the day in case you missed them the first 17 times.

Then I might just get my other bot to autofollow about 500 people per day and I'll tweet them, too, just to tell them that Twitter isn't for doing the kind of thing you're talking about. Swines! Maybe I could slip in a tiny-url to, uh, Vince James' latest no-doubt-totally-above-board "How-I-made-$77million-in-a-year" promo. Ya think anyone would notice?

Then if all those folks don't follow me back, I'll, uh, come back and post here asking how to mass unfollow. And then I'll, uh, send the bot off to do it again with 500 new people the next day.

Heck, I might even write a WSO about "Twitter Crusher Cash Domination Slayer Sniping," say. Whaddayathink? I reckon it'd sell great guns.

Does this help the cause any?

      Colin,

If they followed you, then you are not spamming the hell out of them - you are marketing the hell out of them.

If you choose to use Twitter that way and Twitter lets you do it, then why not? I wouldn't do that, but I'm not in your shoes. In fact, I have pretty much abandoned my old Twitter account to start afresh just with people I know, and a few interesting-looking people with common interests.

On Facebook, I deleted all my marketer "friends" a while back and now I enjoy just using it to interact with friends and family.

For anybody considering Twitter marketing I would recommend a family-and-friends-only account and a separate account for marketing.

(Yeah, I know, some Twitxperts are thinking, "Only two accounts? You need at least 2,000 to make real money!!").

its a thin line, twitter was not put up so you can post loads of links, it was supposed to be like facebook, to keep in touch with people, etc.

wont be long though before the foot is put down on all of this and it'll be ruined for everyone.

it would not surprise me that if they have a problem with the complaints about people who have had their account suspended, that twitter will start to use a filter process based on how many tweets you do and how many of those have links in them, if the tweets with links in them surpass the amount that do not, they wont get posted at all.

Wired magazine ran a story a few months ago about a guy who wanted to see if he could just drop off the grid, or if people could use the Internet to track him down.

One of the things he did was create a Twitter account and use it to join the group using Twitter to communicate and coordinate their efforts to track the writer down. He made the account look "real" by following a few hundred marketers, so his account always had a steady stream of new links and tweets.

I check my Twitter account once in a while, but the stream is almost always the same - an automated progression of affiliate links, promos for "how to make money on Twitter" products and "inspirational" quotes to try and fool the spam police.

      Bo-ring...

      • When you receive spam tweets, note that you chose to follow them. Twitter is just like any other medium for communication and marketing with a combination of info, news, ads, spam, etc. Even online websites, emails, and all of the social networks are composed of all of these elements. The issue with Twitter right now is that it has a lot of noise compared to other media. Simply unfollow the spammers just as you would unsubscribe to someone's email subscription.

I am sure Twitter is working on this problem and will figure out ways of containing spam within their network in the same way that Google has dealt with spammy websites. If you read their TOS carefully, you will see some hints on their progress on all this.

Bingo... the one-dimensional, "in your face" promotional selling tactic simply doesn't work with social media.

People are wise to it, and can ignore it (and do).

Savvy marketers realize this and build better systems.

Most people have no clue how to use twitter or any other social media platform. They just spam, spam, spam thinking they will get a ton of traffic. All social media tools should be used to build relationships. That's how you make sales. People buy from those they know and trust.
