Anyone See the Google Commercial from the Super Bowl?

I thought it was cool that it was all screen capture (it was done with Camtasia.)

Here it is:

You could create that in less than an hour

Yeah my family seemed to enjoy it.

Do they really need to advertise though? I thought most bing users returned.

I think it was a good idea. About 1/3 of the ads from the Super Bowl were sending people to websites. Where do you think they typed it in

It would take less than 3 minutes to create. But it might take a few hours to come up with a great concept.

    Great job Google

I was actually surprised to them advertise. They paid a lot of money for that, and I'd guess nearly all internet users already know of them. Most people already have their favorite search sites, and the majority already use Google, so I'm curious as to what they expected to gain by that spend. According to Wikipedia, a 30-second ad was $3.01 million, so the 52-second ad would have been close to $6 million.

Well, Google also SPENDS $500 Million a year to have YouTube... $6 Mil. is a joke for Google

Scott, I'm not questioning their resources, just curious about their reasoning. Wouldn't you like to know the reasoning behind some of their decisions?

I was disappointed with the amount of non-funny ads this year. I only got 2 belly laughs, it was the lil kid with doritos (slapping that guy) and and the other ninja doritos ad. I saw a lot of internet related ads that surprised me, the google ad was one of them. It was fairly simple to create. It was to the point and made you follow along reading everything that was typed. The ad cost to run was through the roof as was said, but the creation probably did not cost as much.

Google understands that if you can't remember the company name after seeing an ad, then it was a failure. Think about their website. You can see it in your mind, right?

I think the Super Bowl commercial was brilliant. Thanks for sharing.

    Dennis,

I remember an ad for the Electric Company. It featured "Little Bill". I wondered why the monopolistic company would advertise at all. Now I understand it was about good will.

I think Google had this in mind with this commercial. It is a gentle reminder that Google loves us. Maybe they do. Maybe they don't. But that's not the issue. It is the feeling that they are a useful, service rather than an overpowering giant.

Why does McDonald's advertise so much?

This is EXACTLY why they ran the ad. As they start to take over the world, they need to keep happy associations of their brand in people's minds. Especially as things like that controversy about digitizing all the books in the world, or capitulating to China's censorship demands awhile back, neither of which are horrible things, but tend toward the appearance of a faceless leviathan. These issues will only increase in frequency as they get bigger.

I can't believe that was done with Camtasia! Are you sure? It just seems like a little higher quality.

I think the "searcher" was moving a little too fast and should have taken things a bit slower. LOL

However, it was a very cool commercial.

Great commercial for offline marketers as most of it was based on local searches and how you can get a site to the first page of google and in the top 1o box!

I agree, that's a great example to show clients the benefits of targeting long tail and local keywords. I've already bookmarked the video for use in presentations .

It's also a great proposition for doing a video like that for your clients. "Google spent $6 Million running that ad. I can do the exact same for $2,500."

Cool commercial. Believe it or not, there are still people who may have heard of "Google" but aren't sure what Google is. Then there are those that don't know even the simple things we take for granted. I still run into people who don't know what a blog is.

Take my roommate as an example, she still searches the internet using her AOL browser. When I asked her to "Google" something she gave me a blank stare. I had to not only show her how to find Google.com but how to use it. It blew me away.

There are still people out there that needed to see that commerical. And others were simply reminded that Google is still around and look at all the neat searches you can do with it.

Well-done and well-placed. But did they get a decent ROI from it? They'll never really know since there's no way to definitively track it. But I enjoyed it nonetheless.

It was a nice counterpoint to all the Bing ads where "searchers" spin off into riffs of free-association gibberish, presumably from using Google. In 52 seconds, they showed someone using Google as part of their everyday life and getting the results they wanted quickly and easily.

The "awww" factor just cements the ending in people's minds.

      Brilliant...

The other ad that stuck out for me was the Miller ad where the grinning delivery guy announced that Miller was giving up its time to promote some of their customers. That was followed by four "regular guy" local businesses, by name and location. Definitely reinforced Miller's brand image of premium beer for the common person.

I agree with your first point!

However, for me personally, I thought the Miller Beer one was stupid!

I agree that, as a standalone, this ad made little sense. In the context of their advertising over a variety of sporting events (college and pro football, basketball and even baseball), it fit.

Many of their ads for their "High Life" brand feature the same delivery guy showing up at a tailgate party, private box, etc. and finding stereotypical hoity-toity types doing things that don't fit the image. The delivery guy not only doesn't deliver the beer, he confiscates what's already there and distributes it to people who do fit the brand image. Kind of a beer version of Robin Hood.

The Super Bowl ad, in effect, did the same thing to the company itself. Instead of using the time for one of the bigger corporations in the country, they gave it to a handful of average Joes pursuing the "high life".

At least that's how I saw it...

      Awwww, that was soooo cute!!

And regarding whether Google needs to advertise, well, maybe not right now, but Bing is really bringing out the big guns trying to shoot Google down, so I see this as a defensive move to keep Google on people's minds and counter some of the garbage that Bing's putting out in its ads.

I saw the ad live ... and while I thought it conveyed how near ingrained the site is into the fabric of our everyday lives - or most folks who work with a computer regularly anyhow ... that google can help you with a great many things. It left me a bit disappointed.

I thought ... that was a prime spot by one of the globes most influential information and marketing and tech co's on the planet, and thats all they could come up with?

They have the resources, the brain power and the reasons to have created an ad that was awe inspiring.

Perhaps they could have done somehting a little more creative that would have helped their customers ... all the people sending them Millions of Dollars in PPC!!! $$$$

That was a brilliant ad, very cheap to produce, and the cost of running it was a drop in the bucket for them.

Look at all of us talking about them today! This is all about mindshare. Yes, even your grandma has heard of Google, but a lot of people are talking about Bing and if Google starts to appear like a has-been or 2nd place it would be disastrous for them. This is just a small step to prevent that avalanche from starting.

I thought that the ad did a good job of teaching people more about what you can use google for. I have people in my family are still "afraid of the internet" and I think watching that commercial, and seeing so many examples of Google in action is neat. "Wow, I can use google to find a local business? check on a flight? translate from another language? All from Google?"

So many people watch the superbowl. There had to be some potential people there.

I actually thought the google advert was a poor effort.

It lacked impact and was too subtle.

It was trying to be clever and could have been much more direct.

I think they had to make an advert! Probably because they want to reduce the tax what they are pay to the government! So they had to spend on advertising a little! Everyone knows they don't need to advertise them self! Even a complete Alien knows what is Google for sure.

Anyway the ad is great! I like it.
