Google Punishes The BBC For Being Too Slow

I've noticed an interesting phenomenon with the bbc.co.uk site.

Some days it loads really slowly and my page ranker tells me it is 85.

However, on the days it loads quickly, it's ranking goes up to 63.

This has happened consistently for the last month (that I've noticed).

Google have stated that page load speed is part of its algorithm, but I was surprised that a major authority site could be penalised so drastically (if that is what is happening).

    That's an interesting one Martin, I would have thought that given the BBC's status as an authority site it would be immune to penalties, perhaps there is another reason why it alternates between loading quickly and slowly for you, though I am not sure why that could be.
