If it will be great for info consumers, it will be great for the right content producers...

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Well, I'm sure that many IM'ers will make a ton of money off of the iPad but I don't really see it changing IM.

I think it will change IM because more people will be online everywhere. Not just at home. More than now with laptops.

Try the search feature, we've already had a batch of threads about it.

    Here's the consensus:

It's a miserable little toy that's pointless, because it doesn't have enough of the right technical features.
It's also the greatest thing since sliced bread and the people to get in early will make a fortune.
It's an awesome tool that millions of schools and businesses will adopt eagerly.
But it's lousy because it sucks compared to a netbook, let alone a real laptop.
It sucks because it lacks a camera.
It's just an overgrown iPhone without the phone. Who cares?
Of course, it's another example of how everything Steve Jobs touches turns to gold.
There's really nothing more to say.
You watch, this is only the beginning of something great.

You'll find all the details in the existing threads.

MAN, even your "CONSENSUS" doesn't agree with itself!

Consensus is defined in English as, firstly, general agreement and, secondly, group solidarity of belief or sentiment. It has its origin in a Latin word meaning literally to feel together.[1]
      Here is what *I* believe:

Like sliced bread, some may view it as pointless, and not see the real potential. They are like a myopic neophyte that may look at a horse in the face and figure "what good is it?"! It isn't that great to pet, won't wait until you get home, and you DON'T want to let it jump on you. Meanwhile, they miss the point that it can be loyal in its own way, you can ride it, AND it can be used to power other things. To this VERY day, THOUSANDS of years later, the term HORSEPOWER is STILL used as a measurement!

That pretty much covers EVERYTHING "Mr. Enthusiastic"(MAN what a sarcastic and ironic name), said.

In short, I think camforbes is right. And frankly, I didn't see any hype. They COULD have hyped it up, but they DIDN'T! The REAL "hype" came from people that chose to look at it for what it is NOT!

EVEN Wozniak said it was NOT made for people like him, but that schools he has been to, students, teachers, and likeminded people may consider it PERFECT! What good is a camera, if you never use it? My last phone had a camera. You know what *I* saw it as? A vehicle to RIP ME OFF! I did NOT want one! I NEVER used it! But I had to pay DEARLY for it, and it was a CHEAP(LOW RES even for the time!) camera. My NEW phone has MORE functionality(It has apps, a full keyboard, email, etc....), NO camera, and costs LESS!!!!!!!!!!! And WHY have a phone? It is AWFULLY large for a phone. and most netbooks are not TRULY portable. Just get bumped at the wrong time, or drop it, or have the screen smashed by a careless person in the seat in front of you.

BTW Steve Jobs had PLENTY of flops! Lisa, next, etc....

      Steve

I was trying to humorously point out that there is no consensus. There are many different points of view, and few people willing to switch to someone else's point of view. Any attempt to believe what everyone says about the iPad only winds up in contradictions. At least some of the people are missing the point. The only thing we can all agree on is that time will tell who's right and who missed the mark. If my attempt at a joke fell flat and caused confusion, I apologize.

"Mr. Enthusiastic"(MAN what a sarcastic and ironic name)
It's actually neither sarcastic nor ironic. If you're curious about why I chose it, you're welcome to send me a private message. I'd prefer to not have other people guess and proclaim what my motivations are, rather than asking. In any event, my choice of user name doesn't shed any light on the future of the iPad. So let's get back to the topic.

As I mentioned, if you use the search function, you'll find several threads where people bring out all the different points of view I mentioned. The thread with "shut up" in the title (posted by the forum's owner, by the way) may be the longest running, most diverse thread. In that one, you can see my own opinion about the iPad. You'll also see many other points of view.

I swear, I am STILL laughing about THAT one.

Who knows though? I thought iPOD sounded like a STUPID name until I saw all the things planned for it. It really IS a POD and, hooking to the internet, I guess the i makes sense.

Still, it DID buy them some extra advertising.

The popularity of iphone, ipod, and ipad, and apple tv brings up some problems that need to be considered by IM folk...

None of them support flash content at this point. And there is no indication that they ever will.

This means that if you want to target that user market and you are relying heavily on flashplayer delivered video or audio content in your publishing you may need to provide prominent links or buttons for "ipod, iphone, ipad, and apple tv" compatible content pages where media content is delivered in quicktime format.

Additionally if you want to target these markets then you had better put itunes compatible content delivery options into your publishing.

That means that you should start publishing premium membership based and free multimedia publications with itunes compatible podcast feed subscription processes.

This does NOT mean submitting your podcasts to the itunes store but that should be at least part of your marketing model...

Podcasts in the itunes store are traditional one feed for all free public models.

If you are publishing premium paid content or wish to force capture individual subscriber details for free subscriptions and personalize the feeds with name etc then you need to use third party platforms.

Premium, individually identifiable and personalizeable subcriber feeds can not be published through the itunes store but can still be delivered with one click subscription buttons into the itunes desktop application which then syncs with these popular portable devices.

Since 2005 we have been developing and honing what we believe to be the best premium podcasting platform available today for both data capture, personalization, and premium content delivery and security at www.Nanacast.com and since 2006 companies have been using our solution to deliver premium content and manage their subscribers and billing.

You can hear our partner Paul Colligan discuss our technology which he markets under the Premiumcast.com label at Google Tech Talk in this video published by Google on Youtube in June 2008:

His talk is pre iPad but the concepts and principles are very important for many who are trying to wrap their mind around the parallels of mobile media, rss publishing, etc.

The main thing that people need to consider is that you need to deliver your content in multiple formats to boost consumption... deliver it in the way your client wants to consume it...

Then of course you have the app store... which is far more revolutionary than the hardware and which essentially drives the demand for the hardware.

Its not about the iPad, iPod, iPhone, or apple tv...

    Its about iTunes.

iTunes is the greatest portal for desktop marketing, content delivery, and application syndication that the world has ever known.

Heck we have even developed a system that can be used for two way communication between individuals delivering audio, video, and pdf based individual messaging back and forth delivered through iTunes.

I can manage hundreds of thousands or even millions of subscribers and search for and look up a single personally identifiable subscriber and send then a video or audio message direct to only that individual in iTunes which can then be synced with their iPad, iPhone, iPod, and apple tv automatically. This we facilitate with our publishing system at Nanacast.

Then you have the app store and you can create apps preloaded with subscriber feeds to push content direct to an app which can happen without even syncing with iTunes. Anyone can get an app developed these days.

The iPad is designed to appeal to those who want a big iphone or a big ipod... one of its primary purposes is to continue to drive the popularity of iTunes and increase demand for content delivered through the iTunes software, iTunes store, and app store.

Billions of applications, songs, videos, tv shows, movies, internet radio, podcasts etc all being funnelled through itunes.

Think of iTunes like the google of premium digital content delivery.

Again... its all about iTunes... the hardware is only designed to make consuming content from itunes easier, more popular, and more enjoyable.

iTunes is bundled with quicktime and its easily one of the most popular applications in the world on both PC and MAC machines.

    iPod = iTunes + apps + wifi - flash
    iPhone = iTunes + apps + At&t + 3g web + wifi - flash
Mac = iTunes + everything a computer offers.
PC = iTunes + everything a computer offers
    iPad = iTunes + apps + 3g + wifi - flash

Focus on iTunes and not just the individual device...

iTunes is the Portal that gives you access to those 5 device user markets.

Then focus on delivering content to those markets in the way that they want to consume it.
