Help??? Getting hosting for a UK domain

I am in the US but want to get a UK domain (the .co.uk variety) for a site I want to setup over there. My goal for doing this is I want it to rank well over in UK results and believe this would do better than a standard .com domain.

Now, I know I can order this domain from Godaddy; however, it seems to get a little tricky when trying to find hosting for it as when I just went into BlueHost and Hostgator, it only has the .com, .net, .org, and other similar domain extensions available to choose from. For those who have these UK domains, how do I go about getting hosting for them? Can I get them from a company like Bluehost or does it have to be one that specifically hosts out of the UK? Also, once I find thee hosting, will I be able to add on domain names that aren't UK domains like the .coms and .nets?

Also, for those who are not in the UK but have a UK domain, are there any other things I should be made aware of that would make it different from a more standard domain?

    Hey there!

It is deceptively simple what you have to do to get hosting working for any kind of domain.

All ANY domain does.. i.e. co.uk, .com.au, .co.za, .de, .fr, whatever is essentially end up pointing to your web server somewhere.

Basically you have to login to godaddy.com and point the 'name servers' to your host. Think of it like an index at your web hosting companies for all their web servers. This is information available at your hosting company, generally by searching for name servers.

And yes, I'm fully aware that any l337 sys admins out there will probably cringe at my explanation, but I'm trying to keep it non-techy and basic.

Don't get ripped off by folks telling you you need a special account, etc. As an Australian, I hear this all the time.

If you get stuck, add me to Yahoo or AIM and I can point you in the right direction for free. No problems at all.

You can hosts sites anywhere, but if you are targeting specific countries then you will get better ranking if you host the sites in that country.

    For UK I recommend:

    UnitedHosting.co.uk

    fasthosts.co.uk

      Hi Sam,

So if these hosts have add on domains available where I can add a .com or .org, are you also saying that those will not rank as well in the SERPS as they would from a host in the US? This would seem to be the case I would think.

Exactly. The difference is not that big, but with SEO every bit counts.

Yes, it would seem that way.

For our predominantly UK sites we host in the UK. For the USA and Worldwide sites we host in the USA.

Good stuff. The fog appears to be clearing a little for me.

Does this also carry over to link building? When building links to these sites, does Google discount links that are not from that country. For example, if you have the .co.uk domain, do links from the US count less on the Google search engine in the UK and the reverse as well if you have a US domain and have UK web address links?

If your target market is the UK, then your main domain should be domain.co.uk and your hosting should be UK based. You should also try to acquire the .COM and redirect it to your UK domain or use it to target the US market.

This is what I am trying to do. Get a separate site that is similar to my one in the US but this one directly targeted to the UK market.

Also G announced that they will give some extra boost to the sites with lower response time, and hosting your site locally definitely helps with that. One more reason why you should do it.
