Noob, introduction etc..

Hi everyone.

I've been thinking about trying my hand at online business for quite a while, but have only recently decided to finally get my hands dirty. I'm already wondering why it took me so long to actually commit to it.

I came across this forum a few days ago and have been reading and learning a lot.

I wanted to discuss some of my ideas and was hoping someone might have time to offer any advice or tips.

Firstly, my background is in graphic design, though I originally studied media production. I'm also passionate about all things audio - music, sound design, etc.

I've been out of work for some time because of health reasons, but things are on the up and up now, and I'm planning on making up for lost time!

I am something of a jack of all creative trades, but always considered myself a master of none. It was only recently that I stopped being so hard on myself and realized that my varied skill set has a certain amount of potential.

I'm planning on creating and selling original material for download, starting with royalty free recordings for the music/tv industry, and perhaps later moving on to things like video training. I've also been considering selling my skills as a Flash banner designer, but that's down the line.

Also, with video training, I've been playing with the idea of selling the rights to resell products, but that is something much further down the line. Right now, I'm focusing on creating and recording the most original, usable audio content for DJs, producers, radio guys, TV/Film guys, etc.

I'm not very business savvy, and right now my plan is something along these lines:
Create company name, logo, brand identity etc (done)
Look at my target market and successful competitors.
Create my original, high quality content, based on what is popular, what is lacking in the market, and what I foresee to be potentially popular.
Offer content of different sizes and prices, which will later be refined to focus on the most successful method.
Upload and sell via main website, integrated with tradebit/paypal.
Build up a catalog of products over time.
Develop a promo/marketing strategy that doesn't insult the intelligence of potential clients, and build an email list.
Build an affiliate program which integrates into the main website without sacrificing its integrity.

If anyone has any tips, (which don't involve buying software, ebooks or sending money to Western Union!) I would be very grateful for the help.

Thanks, and love from Ireland.

Wow! I think that you are going to do very well at this as long as you keep at it. For the last 1 1/2 years I myself have been out of work due to some health issues and have been reading and studying what people are doing in order to be successful in this completely new world that I have located.

It's a lot of fun and I enjoy what I am learning. So much so, that I am wanting to make a career change to this new found dream. Its a lot of work, but not when you LOVE what you do. I am in the process of learning how to do video as it is one of my passions and trying to figure out how to turn that into some profits.

You sound like you have some great ideas and a lot of ground work laid out already. If you have any direct questions, please send me a private message directly.

    Good luck to you!

Well...you're building a business and that takes time, money, and the drive to see it through.

I'd be sure to have $750-1000 available for the domain, website, logo, aweber, and a variety of scripts and incidentals along the way.

Do plenty of research, learn that market, lay out a clear plan, associate a time and cost to each item, and then get started. Once everything is in place you'll need to start marketing it either with free or paid methods.

That is an excellent rough outline. Of course you are going to want to fine tune some things, and I agree with Rob that you are going to need a little startup capital. It sounds like you have all of the necessary skills to make this work, but no matter how good you are at what you do it has to be properly marketed!

Remember that you need to put together a complete marketing plan or have someone create one for you if you wish to see true success with this business model. No matter how good your business is it WILL NOT MAKE MONEY if no one can find it!

    Welcome Condra

Great outline of a business plan. Heres marketing success in a few words that you may also want to keep in mind:

Find a hungry crowd, find out what they want to eat, then go get it and offer it to them at a price they can afford and deliver it to them...simple huh!

All the best for the future.

    Hi,

You've got a pretty well thought out plan so that puts you ahead of a lot of people who kind of drift in and out with the current.

You'll be flooded with advice here which is both a blessing and a curse so the trick is really to keep focused on your plan. Develop a good marketing system and then stick with it - just like an offline business there's no magic to it.

  • If you are selling your own thing. Do this first. Create a simple landing page and use Adwords to test the interest of your idea.

Don't go full on. Keep a budget. But see if what you have to offer can really sell. If it can then you can build out from there. Adwords is great for this.

Wow thanks for the replies and all the advice and encouragement. It is exactly what I was hoping for.

I've already read and re-read the comments and I'll take everything on board.

I especially respect the fact that the responses here have been so practical and down to earth.
I'm very much a realist and I don't expect to make "easy money from the internet". On the contrary, I'm hoping to be able to generate some revenue from doing what I love.

      Thanks again.

If you ever decide to offer up some PLR music and audio loops in the WSO's do give me a pm.

How's that for some mini market research?

Thanks for your reply but this is where my lack of business savvy becomes very obvious!

Can you expand on your post please?

Were you asking if I was to produce some content that I would sell as "Private Label Right" products, to PM you in case you might be interested in purchasing it? WSO = Web Search Optimisation?
If thats what you were saying, then I will most definitely be in touch as soon as my catalog develops.

Please excuse my lack of business/pseudonym knowledge!

Take your plan and implement the suggestions you get here and run with it. You'll do just fine as long as you take action, implement what you know (or even just think you know) and magic things will happen. Good luck!

Thanks for the cheery response krharper. I must say, everyone is very nice around here. I hope I can be of help to some others here at some point.
