Is anchor text really important..or a myth for backlinking

I am a bit of a newbie but i am questioning the value of anchor text in links. Why? Because I have been seeing the links from those in the top google pages and their backlinks rarely have anchor texts. Actually, can anchor text tip google off that it is more of a spammy link? Just a newbie food for thought. All the top companies have normal links never anchor from my observations

Make sure the anchor text is also appears in the content on the page that you are linking to.

Every incoming link either helps to some degree or does nothing. No incoming link can harm you (if you believe the virtual consensus on this question). But the degree of help is debatable for every incoming link you get. If a site I want to put a link on will allow it, I always use the main keyword I want to rank for as anchor text. I think it does help my page rank for that keyword vs. leaving only the URL as anchor text every time. But I will not avoid sites that will allow me to leave a link if it can only be a URL link. Some will argue that this is actually good - that Google sees a mix of anchor text and URL links as more "natural." I can see the argument's merit, but at the end of the day EVERY link, regardless of its make-up, is artificial and not natural - if you went out and set it up yourself. The only truly "natural" links in Google's idiotic system are ones that represent a real "vote" for your site. That is, where someone is so impressed by your content that they place a link from their blog or site to yours in order to share it (and lose visitors) to your site. How utterly shortsighted of Google to start down that path all those years ago. But it is what it is, so we marketers have to deal with it.

Thanks all and a special thanks to Zeus66 and I totally agree but it seems that google(from Matt Cutts interviews) is starting to really crack down on the search engine spamming and i do notice that when an authority site uses links to other sites they hardly ever use anchor texts. Actually whenever is see an anchor text i think i am going to some sales page. Some anchor texts look so spammy on a page like " cheap Viagra here" as an example
"Real sites" never seem to use anchor texts and they are on the top of google

Build yourself a "real site" then and take on the Amazons and Ebays of the world. What they don't get in terms of anchor text link juice, they more than make up for in superior on-site content and massively more incoming links than any of us could hope to accomplish without a lot of full-time 24/7 link building activities. I think your mistake is in not accounting for all those variables. Link number will overpower anchor text SEO link building by sheer numbers for sites with household names.
