Email marketing guru's alert!

Hi all,

I have always used plain text to send my emails out to get them through spam filters etc.

I would like to switch to a more professional look (html) as it really suites my industry and present a better company image to my clients.

I have the following template currently. http://purdonenterprises.com/dealalert.htm

Problem is that it when i test it and send it to myself (gmail address) it gets caught in my junk mail folder in MS Outlook. It makes it through fine to yahoo and gmail boxes directly just fine (if you check your inbox on gmail.com that is). This template also passes the spam test in Aweber and has a spam score of zero. I understand that the content need to be carefully chosen and contain no words like free, bonus, discount etc. once again aweber says my content is fine.

1. Why is it being caught in my junk mail folder in Outlook if it makes it to other inboxes like yahoo etc which are extremely strict.

2. is there a tool (or even service) that I can use to make my template even more NON-spammy?

The core of my business is email marketing so i really need to get this handled asap.

Thanks so much

Dale

    Hi,

Your best bet is to send it as text and HTML. Not sure how you can avoid the spam filters catching your template, but at least your email should get through.

    Thanks,

    John

I do send at text/html. All this does is ensure that your readers will be able to view the email IF there email client does not support html.

It does not however prevent it being caught by spam filters. Aweber uses spamassassin for its analysis and mine passes with flying colours....however it still gets caught in my junk mail (outlook). the thing that worries me is that spam assassin is meant to be the top in the industry.

      any suggestions most welcome

I also have the same problem. Actually I send it through text/html and it is 0 level spam on my aweber, however when it gets on my gmail - my test copy is on my spam folder.

Have you tried asking aweber for help? If you're a paying customer, I don't see why they wouldn't. This is more of a tech support question at this point.

Aweber claims that my email is perfect (anti-spam wise).

When i run the html source through here Are Your Email Newsletters and Campaigns Being Blocked by Spam Filters? its alot more detailed and scores me 3.3. (aweber clearly does a very basic spam assessment)

I trust the gravitymail website this rather than aweber for obvious reason above. Now its jsut down to understanding what these spamassassin scores mean, i can then alter my source email.

Have you tried Google? After about a minute or so of research, I determined that it would appear that you've previously sent email from this send address which had a spamassassin score. This is what AWS is:

              AutoWhitelist - Spamassassin Wiki

If you send mail in the future with lower scores, you will get a lower AWS. Note that Gmail doesn't use Spamassassin (as far as I can tell), so that AWS is irrelevant to why you go in the spam box there.

As for the HTML/Text thing, are you sure you're including the separate HTML and text versions of your email in aweber? It's possible that the spamassassin scorer where you've sent the email is configured wrong. I'd see if you can try scoring it somewhere else.

On that front, if aweber says it's multipart, it's got to be. That's not something they would flub. They've been around a long time. They send a lot of email and do tend to know what they're doing.

If you're unhappy with your delivery rates, try iContact. I've been using them with a client, and it works really well. Accordingly, it's also pretty expensive when you have bigger lists.

Or, you can stick with text only emails and use "what works" instead of what "looks professional". I don't mean that as a dig, I just mean what I said. If your concern is primarily getting into the inbox, tailor your efforts to meet that goal, rather than trying to focus on getting a pretty design.

EDIT: I misread your initial post when replying again - I see you get through to Gmail but not via Outlook. That means you're hitting the spamfilter at your ISP. Find out how they score spam and see what might be the cause. It could have nothing to do with what Spamassassin says at all. Still though, if text works, and HTML doesn't - stick with text.

No amount of fancy looks will be as valuable to you as actually getting the email delivered.

You mean my internet service provider ISP? (i am downloading my gmail to outlook through POP)

Yeah i have been using text based for the past 2 years,id really like to jack it up though. For my industry my text emails look like Nigerian scams!

                Thanks for the help.

Yeah, it does depend on the industry, but consider that text emails are also the kind that friends and family write, rather than a business.

To me, one of the strengths of email marketing is the intimacy of the context. Email remains what the postal mailbox was 100 years ago. It's not just junkmail and bills. People really use it for personal stuff too.

That being said, it can be an advantage in both readership and response to appear more on the "friend" side than the "business" side, and part of that can be looking informal.

And again, it will depend on the industry. If you at all have the liberty of being personal and one-on-one in your writing, consider making the newsletter more like a news LETTER from you to the one recipient, rather than an impersonal newsPAPER type of thing.

Just my $0.02. Hope it helps.

Colin, how can I test whether aweber is including a text MIME part and HTML MIME part?

I thought that if is sent a test email to my gmail account, i could simply view source and would be able to see the separate MIME parts but i only see the html part. unless thats because outlook dicthes the plain text MIME part as it comes in as it (as an email client) knows that it supports html.

                    any ideas?

              A couple of things...
              1. Outlook - Depending on the version, it's installed with really high spam filters. You can change this, but keep in mind that most of your customers won't know how (most likely).
              2. HTML vs. Plain Text - HTML emails will also impact deliverability in addition to getting your messages put in the spam folder. Given this, make sure that it's really necessary for your business.

Here are a few pointers if you are set on using HTML:

              - Code email by hand to avoid unintentional coding problems that are inherent with HTML editing programs
              - Keep the size of your HTML to a minimum and account for headers
              - Make sure it's self-contained
              - If you're using css, it needs to be inline
              - Use HTML tables and avoid nested tables (no div tags)

And with regard to spam assassin, you can actually download from their site a list of all their triggers.

If your ISP is flagging the email as spam, you might want to check with the postmaster. They should have published guidelines.

For example, here is the link for gmail:
Bulk Senders Guidelines - Gmail Help

    Good luck.
