I Don't Understand This Ping Thing

by Lainie 18 replies
Hi everyone

I've seen a lot of threads about the benefits of pinging blogs.

I don't have a blog, I have a static site and was wondering, can you ping a static site? Does it have the same benefits as pinging a blog?

If so, how do I do it and how often should I do it?

Thanks

Lainie

Just go to pingomatic.com, input your domain name and hit ping.

Basically it just informs search engine spiders, that you have new content and they should go and index it...
If you have a static page that is already indexed by search engines, there is no need for pinging

      Thanks Chris

I have over 120 pages of my site indexed, I was wondering about the new pages I upload, should I ping these as I do them to get them indexed quicker? Can you ping deep pages or is it just your home page?

Sorry for all the questions, I did say I didn't understand didn't I!

      Thanks

I really wanted to know this too...thanks for asking...and thanks for ansering...

but i got a more detailed question...

    1) what if you ping and ping and ping....do they give you a warning
for pingining too much? DO you get PENALIZED for pinging too much?

    2) If you have a blog, do you ping your main DOMAIN NAME or specific link
    for ex:
    A) blog.com
    OR
    B) blog.com/specificarticle02.htm

    Thanks

self-hosted wordpress blogs have built-in pinging service, so it automatically pings some directories/engines -- so you could ping a page, or the root of the domain name.

It's not wise to do it more than once -- you might get banned by these ping directories. They might consider you're spamming them.

There's a cool plugin that helps you avoid that. maxbloger or something like that - do a Google search

I have all the same questions. Could you send me info as well? Or possibly post here for everyone to benefit? Thanks!

I have been researching the same question, thanks for posting...seems like I may have the same concerns of getting penalized for over 'pinging'...

      Thanks all...enjoy your morning!

I so many words you can do to a static site like you do to a blog for pinging, but you have to do it manually

just make sure to ping your internal pages

what ever you do, do not use pingomatic for a ping service this is the most spammed ping service out there

you want to succeed in this intermaketing game go to where the crowd is not

you can Google many ping services and have much better success

If you need all the details check my sig for all WSO's and find a link that takes you back to my I come clean page this goes into great details and why.

Thank you Ed, can you explain what you mean by "Pingomatic being the most spammed ping service"? Spam in what way? How does that affect someone using it? I'm confused.

Here is my cut on what I said about pingomatic

every blog every person who pings uses pingomatic including spammers

I have tested the response and the indexing with the different ping services so I know when I see the bots coming to my sites how each service is responding

I just had a client who had many many pages not indexed, and some of the pages would not index period

So I started using the different ping services over time and the other ping services were able to completely index a site the Google had refused to index certain pages in the past

and I have withnessed that different ping services will get pages indexed at different rates

I am not saying that pingomatic is not working, but I get my best results not using them

I am speaking from testing this over a long time

      I had to add this

      the spamming part

you will spam a ping service if you ping them to much for one page you need to spread out the timing

you can ping a site several times per day but make sure it is not the same page in the same day

Ping-o-Matic is the default ping service for every Wordpress install, if you consider how many thousands of WP blogs ping every second...

Yes, better to use a variety of services.

      Best!

Ed (sparrow) knows his stuff ... get what he is offering.

With that said, I'll respectively disagree with the comment about not using pingomatic.

Pingomatic is "good enough". Using it will get the job done.

How To Get Indexed In Google

And by using it, I mean go to pingomatic, type in a title and the url of the specific page you want indexed (you definitely don't have to type in your home address only), and submit.

With regards to overpinging - think of it this way: I make a point of drinking 4 liters (or litres for the people on the other side of the pond) of water a day. I can handle a gallon of water over the course of a day - I can't drink it all in one swig.

I *think* Google is the same - it can't drink from the firehose. Instead, only ping once you know that Google has swallowed the previous ping. You could check your server logs or trust me when I tell you that typically Google visits quickly after you send out a ping ... come to think of it, I am surprised no one was come out with a script that does just that

Isn't there a way to submit new web pages / blog posts to your site map and then manually inform Google that you have updated?
