How can I verify my wordpress site in Google webmaster tools? I need to place a meta tag in the head section of my home page. Any ideas?

Thanks

There are two ways to verify a site in Google. You can:

    1. change meta tags
    2. upload a file to the root directory

If you want to change the meta tags you need to click on editor under the appearance / theme header and make the changes to html between the head tags of the header.php file. If you don't know how to do that, proceed with caution.

The easier method is to create a file as instructed by Google and upload using ftp. That is much less dangerous and the much simpler method.

Well, in order to do that you will need to change the permissions on that file to 666, which means world writable = open invitation for hackers... because 99.5% of the users never change it back to 644!

It is always safer to download the file (in this case the header.php file of your active theme) via FTP, edit it in a simple text editor (Notepad?) and put it back on the server.

A simple method I found in the past was:

Create a new page in your blog (not a post)
In the title/subject area paste the code given to you by Google
Publish it then tell google to verify.

Or - use a plugin. There are a couple, but Robots Meta will do it.
