How do you track what people are talking about in your niche?

Just curious?

I'm trying to stay on top of latest trends in my niche but having a hard time figuring out a system to do such. Google alerts seems to be to broad.

My niche is music, and I'm trying to keep up on the latest and upcoming artists / tracks to create content about.

Is there such a 'formula?'

Thanks

Try putting quotes around your Google alerts - it will make them more specific. Sign up for Google feed reader and start monitoring RSS feeds from sites related to your niche.

Also, check out music forums - there are dozens of them - look at the most popular posts for ideas.

iTunes, Rhapsody, etc. all have blogs - keep track of them via RSS.

Google trends will give you an idea of what people are searching for in any given niche.. and if people are searching for it, they are most likely talking about it too.
