Anyone known "buy your domain" scams running?

by Ben Roy 2 replies
I got an email a few days ago about a domain I recently registered. Supposedly the person was interested in buying it. It is a pretty good domain (I was surprised to see it unregistered), but by the second email there was an offer of $5000 on the table.

Maybe I'm just suspicious because no one has ever tried to buy one of my domains before, but I generally adhere to the old adage that 'if it seems to good to be true, it probably is' with the additional, 'especially on the internet'.

I've seen a couple domain-related scams talked about on the forums here before, but I don't think they were ever related to someone buying them - usually related to "protect your name" or "some company might sue you if you don't engage our services".

    Ben,

One of the most prolific domain scams that has been around for years is this. Someone contacts you suggesting they want to buy your domain. Once you reply affirmatively, they will say in order for them to buy, you must have it appraised, as they only want to pay the fair market value.

They are only selling you on their appraisal service. Once you fall for it and pay for the appraisal, you'll never hear from them again.

Thanks a lot Gene, that's exactly what I thought it might be.
