Did you start with blogger blog and free wordpress?

As I am chugging away with free blogger blog and sometimes free wordpress (I usually screw up, delete it and move it to blogger blog) I am wondering if any of you started out going the free route.

It's by necessity and I fully plan to hire someone to do a 'proper' site for me when I have some money, but, I am just wondering if I should better find ways to make money to do that, rather than spend hours every day doing free blogs that are not bringing anything in.

Just curious and would welcome your input.

Ruth

LOL - you could switch to non free blogs, spend hours blogging and still not have any money coming in - but back to your question...

When I first started blogging I got a Wordpress.com blog and pulled my hair out trying to understand why all those Wordpress forum tip sites kept telling me to do things MY WORDPRESS couldn't do.

It took me about 3 months to learn that there was a difference between Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org.

    I've never used Blogger.

Another thing to bear in mind is. If you host your own site you have a lot more control over the site etc than free.

Are you creating lots of blogs and not putting enough effort into one?

I first started with blogger as it used to be an easy 'in' with Adsense!

I sorta wish I had started with wordpress though - it was SO much more freedom and capability! Theres a plugin for everything

Read the TOS on the free wordpress.COM blogs! Commercial use (ads, adsense, affiliate stuff) is not allowed. Just a reminder...

I started with a free blogger blog and then moved to my own domain and Wordpress.org.

Many people start with a free blog and build it up and then notice the blog has been deleted because they break the TOS.In some cases, a few years work is gone.Don´t save money in the wrong place, invest in a domain name and hosting.

Just to reiterate what Istvan said about the free version of Wordpress, can't use it for a commercial site.

There are very successful high ranking Blogger blogs so it can be done for long periods but why risk it when domains and hosting are so inexpensive now.

My first sites were on free Angelfire and Tripod. Then I moved up to Geocities.

Think I was in the SOHO section down the road from the Rainforest.

Just an obscure reference for all of the "old school" folks here

I remember when I first got into Internet marketing and was using FREE blogging platforms like wordpress.com and blogger only. I still use them today, by the way.

However, if you aren't making any money using the FREE platforms then you might not make any money with your own domain. I started making money from my landing pages I made with blogger and wordpress, then knew I could step up and get my own domain and hosting.

The thing is you'll be able to rank so much faster and easier with your own relevant domain name.

Another thing, just because you don't know how to make a website doesn't mean you can't make your own with the right tools or software.

Just Google "website software" or check this site out for easy comparisons Website Creation Software Review 2010 many of them are cheap and very easy to use. It can cost a lot to hire someone to make a design or template for you.

OR use wordpress.org and there are so many themes you can choose and edit with just a few clicks.

    Good luck!

I started out with ezine articles and squidoo.

I still make money from those articles I made.

    Now I use blogger more.

Ezine and whatever I choose as my landing page seems to work best for me.

Thanks for your feedback............Istvan reminded me of the important bit! I haven't been expecting to make money at this stage, I have 4 blogs but not many pages. I started doing them because of my frustration of learning, learning, learning and not being able to apply what I was learning because I can/'t/couldn't afford domain, hosting, and paying someone to set it up.

    Fortunately that's starting to change.

Based on what Istvan said I think I will copy my posts tonight!

Again, good feedback for me before I get too much more invested.

    Thanks.
