Drastically Increase Your Hard Disk Capacity for Free

I deal in a lot of resale rights and PLR stuff, so naturally over time I tend to end up with a lot of duplicates on my hard drive. This morning I noticed my external HD was becoming dangerously close to full.

I found a freeware program called DupKiller that I used to free up 10GB in a couple of hours.

Setting up the search parameters to find duplicate file sizes rather than file names produced much better results. I also set the parameters to sort the results by file size so that I could deal with the largest duplicates first to free up more disk space faster.

As you delete files, the duplicates disappear from your list, and when you exit the program, your list is saved so you can resume where you left off without having to scan your drives again.

There may be a better application out there, but this one is working nicely for me, and you can't beat the price.

10GB, you're so funny. I have over 2TBs worth of movies sitting on my hard drives. At less than $99 for a 500GB hard drive, you should definitely consider upgrading.

  Alan, We replaced all of our PC's and use Mac's with windows, via VMWare Fusion. We tried a number of HD programs and ended up using DupeGuru and DupeGuru ME (Media Edition) to handle the volume of software on our internal and external Hard Drives. Both programs work incredibly well, and they are quick. Hope this helps in your search for a good Mac program.

An even easier solution - get organized. Really, I don't see how removing duplicate files would increase your HDD capacity?

Yeah, I use Dupkiller, and love it. It's a great resourse.

If there is something out on the market that is better, I'd like to know too because I haven't run across it yet.

  You can clean it out the really fast way like I did early this year - just listen to the idiotic support guy who tells you that you don't have to do a backup before reformatting the disk
  
  I think maybe instead I'll just add your suggestion to my notes for next time (and, of course, I now rely on mozy for the backup part instead of cd's) Thanks!

  And Dmitry, obviously if you delete duplicates, it follows that
  by default, you will free up HDD space....You can't do anything,
  physically, to increase your HDD capacity....

Hi John.

Thanks for this info.

The scan tells me that I have 1,3 Gig of duplicate files on my computer.

My only problem is that i am uncertain if all the files witch show up in the program is duplicate or the orginal file is listed as well?

Can someone with experience guide me here.

  The results show all instances of the file. You must decide which you want to keep and delete the others. When you have only one of that file remaining it will disappear from the results, as there are no duplicates according to the parameters you set for your scan.
  
  There is much to be said for organizing the files on your computer. I generally organize my resell rights and PLR in folders by source and month (useful for keeping track of where and when you got it).
  
  I also use Incansoft's Desktop Acquisition Manager (DAM) to catalog and archive the files, but due to time constraints, I generally don't do that until later.

One additional step to make is defragment your hard drive. Accessories->system tools-> disk defragmenter
Saved me around 50GB from 800GB hard drive, but it may take more than 24 hours to complete, so you have to leave the pc on for a couple of days...

There are a number of ways you can scan which may reveal different results.

For example, searching for similar name could very well reveal duplicate files that contain or are missing a license. Or duplicate files, one of which contains a PDF license, and the other a text license.

MRR_BuyMyProduct.zip - 25.3MB
and
BuyMyProduct.zip - 25.5MB

would only show as duplicate if you scanned for similar file names.

This is going to be very useful to me. I just got a 1T drive, and I know that there are dupes all over my system, and I know that I don't know where they all are. Very scary to hit that delete button myself. Thanks!
