One important tip that I'll share

There's one important thing that I've learned over the years of doing marketing both online and off: carry a small notepad and pen or pencil with you at all times. You have no idea how often I've been excited by a marketing idea I've seen, or been inspired with with my own idea, when I'm away from home or the office. Having that little book with me made it simple to write it down rather than lose it in my own memory.

Later I'll be flipping through that little book and land on something I'd written months and months before. Sometimes the idea on that page was exactly the thing I needed at that very moment.

Don't waste a great idea by letting it slip away!

I'll second that! Also keep a notepad on your nightstand -- I get my most brilliant ideas in the middle of the night, and if I don't write them down right then, they're lost forever.

I have never written down anything in the middle of the night that makes sense. It's either totally illegible or the words are so unrelated I don't have a clue what I was thinking. Makes for some good laughs in the morning though!

Spoton post. I can't tell you how many times I get really good ideas and just forget them because I don't write them down. I have been thinking for a while now to get a notepad and carry it with me but I am getting in my car right now and buying a notepad.

    Cheers

Note pads work awesome and sometimes if I don't have a notepad with me available I'll find something immediately that I can scribble on.

Also a lot of people use digital handheld recorders and just babble into them when they find something they need to babble about.

I haven't used a digital recorder in this manner I'm kind of old school and just write on paper.

I do this with keywords. I keep a little notebook by my monitor and when I see a phrase that looks interesting I'll surf over to wordtracker or use another tool like it to see if anyone is searching for it. If so, I'll dash out an article and submit that baby post haste. It's hit or miss, but even one hit can be worth the effort.

There is something magical about a pen and paper that typing into a computer doens't do
let the wind graze acoss your face, feel the sun on your knees, tap a sip of your coffee, then jot down your thoughts in a notebook
it's a far better way to work than sitting with a laptop perched on your knee doing the same thing

I've got notes with ideas spread out all over my desk! I write down everything I can think of, since you never know when it will come in handy.

totally agree. The number of times I have had a good idea with nothing to write on and I just know that I would have forgotten it by the time I get back to the PC

I do this with my phone, I actually use this application on it that let's me make awesome lists, so I make huge lists of marketing ideas or great things (at least to me ) that I think of while I'm out and about. More than half of the time I later use these spontaneous ideas to make money.

        LOL @ PotPie

I buy the Mead Fat Lil' notebooks (and other brands). They are
small spiral bound 5½ x 3½ inch size, 200 pgs and typically cost
around $2.00 at the office and discount stores. You can find this
type of notebook @ Fam Dollar for $1.00, last time I checked. I
have them in all the various colors, kind of try to color code my
different projects and they are really easy to carry around, keep
one in the car, one in the bed, another next to the computer or
wherever. I normally tuck a ballpoint pen into the spiral part so
I'm not fumbling around looking for a writing instrument.

What a lifesaver to be able to jot down all those precious tidbits
of information or bright ideas as they occur to me.

Steno pads work great also and I'm hooked on the regular school
        size spiral bound notebooks too

There are notebooks everywhere in the house... bedroom, greenhouse, office, kitchen, and the bathroom. Very important to have one there

The things I write in the middle of the night do usually make sense in the morning. Sometimes I have to get up and write several pages of notes just to get the brain to stop galloping and let me go to sleep!
