New Scam Very Clever To Look Out For - Domain Related

So here it is, if im wrong feel free to tell me but heres how its working.

I got an email from someone intrested in buying a domain from me the domain is irrelavant, so i emailed them back with a price i was looking for and then they hit me with this.

Have you had your domain names evaluated in the past? I mean domain appraisals. Without valuation we cannot be sure in the sale price. It's very important for me in terms of reselling too. But we must engage a valuation company with REAL manual service. So I will only accept valuations from independent sources I and my partners trust.

To avoid mistakes I asked domain experts about reputable appraisal companies.

Please check this blog with suggestions from other sellers and buyers:

So why is this a scam.

First sign: They say check this blog for suggestions now that webpage is not a blog and it actually says at the bottom of the page this

Powered by vBulletin Copyright ©2000 - 2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Limited
Now since when does a blog run on vbullitin so anyway i looked a bit more
and went to the root of the domain

If you are the owner of this web site you have not uploaded (or incorrectly uploaded) your web site. For information on uploading your web site using FTP client software or web design software, click here for FTP Upload Information.
So there isnt even a website there, so the so called reputable list above is just a static html page, no post dates no times nothing.

So why is this a scam?

Well there getting you intrested becuase you think they want to buy your domain so there telling you to go and get a valuation done which you of course will have to fork out of your own pocket for.

And these guys own these so called reputable domain name aprasial companies so there not even intrested in getting your domain they just want 75$ for ever person they sucker this way into getting an apprasial done

So anyway be cautious and always look for signs :p

Hope this helps
Mikey

In my opinion this kind of scam should never be an issue.

Negotiation 101 - let them quote the first number, after all they're soliciting you.

If someone is serious about buying your domain or website, they would have had the valuation done B4 contacting you.

They also said how about xxxx$ but we want a valuation and if its more we will pay more but we would expect a discount if its more.

If you plug the first paragraph of the letter you received into Google you'll get over 38,000 matches!

I used to get letters like this when I had some domains up for sale on Sedo, of course the scam is (as you said) that the "domain name appraiser" was their own and thats's where they make the money.

Some of the letters did quote a price offer - usually something interesting like $5000 or more - but of course they would need it appraised by their "independent appraiser" before they could pay this amount of money.

Sad to see that this scam is still in existence, good thing you didn't fall for it.

    All the best...

I've received similar inquiries before. Usually I just delete them. Once I wrote back and said I'd sell for $100,000 and a pack of Juicy Fruit gum. Told them my price was firm and if they tried to negotiate the price doubles with each attempt.

    Never heard from them again.

Never hurts to sound the alarm. There are still people falling for hoaxes that have been around 10 years or more. As long as new people are coming online there will be a need for these types of warnings.

Of course, I'm only posting this because Bill Gates is going to give me $100 for posting this on 5 different forums.

PS - The part about Bill Gates is a joke! I figured I'd better make that clear otherwise someone will run out and start posting it in different forums.
