Is Ebay Selling Dead Or Not ?

I've heard a lot of rumors that ebay selling has died, or that its to hard to make a profit.

I'm just wondering if any of you are having any success at selling items on ebay that you purchase in bulk from chinese suppliers.

The reason I ask is because a friend approached me today and said hes been wanting to try selling stuff on ebay which he will buy in bulk from china at discount price. In my opinion this would work, but to know any success stories with this would be great.

    Hi Ghetto,

Ebay is most certainly not dead. It has become a little harder due to ebays changing policies and increased competition.

However, with the right product in the right market place a ton of money can be made.

My brother took over my ebay business 2 years ago and he has built it into a substantial business.

Products are sourced from all over, including local suppliers and from Asia.

One good product can have you earning a ton of money on ebay.

A great market to get into in the ebay marketplace is the Health & Beauty niche. Stay away from branded products and instead source a supplier and have your own labels put onto the product you are selling. It's the physical product PLR.

You will have zero competition for your particular product.

Another tip is to always stick with small, easy to ship items that have a good mark up.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies guys, we are looking into buying branded products in bulk then reselling on ebay.

You suggested to source a supplier and have your own labels put onto the product you are selling. Wouldn't these be 10 times more difficult to sell? People mainly search for the brand name on ebay - atleast thats what I thought :S.

If a buyer is on ebay specifically looking for a branded product then they will search by brand name. Once they get there they will find many many sellers all competing with one another.

If you decide to enter this market you have less of a chance of success unless you are able to source your branded goods very very cheaply.

The other problem you will face as a buyer from china is to spot the 'fakes'. The majority of suppliers sell 'fake' branded products and that will not do your credibility on ebay any good.

Yes there are buyers searching for branded goods and there are many sellers on ebay to sell the goods to them. However, competition is tough and being able to source real branded material at a good price is difficult.

Now if you change your focus and concentrate on markets where branded goods do not hold much importance then you have a good chance of buying PLR products and make a very healthy profit.

Like i said in my post above the best market for this is the Health and Beauty niche or the embarrasing products niche.

      Hope that helps.

        I should also mention,

If your looking for branded products then you should buy from proper resellers in your country.

If going the non branded route, then importing from China is the way to go, you can even brand your own.

    eBay is still very profitable.

I started off on ebay just a couple years ago and built a six figure business outta it, all by importing products from China and rebranding them.

This is actaully the subject i am most passionate about when it comes to making money online because it's how i got my start and i think it could do well for others to.

It can work with patience and proper market research.

People usually start off all wrong by selling products that they think will sell, and not knowing if it actaully will.. they go off pure guess work.

If you find out what is selling first and know 100% what you can make per sale and know your conversions and see whats working for other sellers, then you will have a better chance of success.

I studied what was working for the top sellers in my market, kept a spread sheet of there daily sales for a few months and after entered the market with 100% certainty that i could sell the stock and make a profit, there was no doubt i would not succeed because i identified a profitable market beforehand and what was working for others.

    Hi Ghetto,

Ebay is not dead at all. People are still making sales every single day. I am too sure why you would think that they are dead or something along those lines.

There are many people out there who are making a decent living online with Ebay.

The key to selling some on ebay is finding your niche and although it can take a while to do some thorough market reserach it is well worth it in the end.

Remember there are many sub-niches you can break into. If you have a particular hobbie perhaps you can make a living out of it.

For example if you like football, why not look at the football memrobilia niche, source a decent supplier, plenty can be found on alibaba.com, purchase a small amount of stock to test with and away you go.

A lot of how well you do will come with practice and testing but rest assured there is plenty of money still to be made on ebay.

    Riz,

Totally aggree with your comment on unbranded product with PLR, a great way to get up a profitable business on ebay.

Steve - agree 100% - research is the key. Don't get me wrong you should always be doing some R&D and testing but I like to sell something I KNOW is going to sell...The beauty of Ebay is you CAN find that out!!! Do your research, look at what is selling, find the profitable items...it's not that hard

You gotta be VERY careful. The amount of scam buyers has gone WAY up on Ebay. It's now very easy to buy something, report it as "not as described" and get your money back. If your selling high cost items, like laptops, etc you've got a big target on your head.

There are also folks selling used, gray market or refurbished items, as new. They ask for the feedback to be left, before they ship the item. I know of one seller making a good $1000 a day selling apple products to people in the U.K doing this.

I have been an importer myself from china then selling the items on ebay but i made a BIG MISTAKE. I was selling branded hair straighteners which turned out to be fake. I went from £125 investment to £300 day in less that 4 months. I was approached by the brands lawyers who took all the money and i had to pay a massive fine.

    PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS WARNING.

Ebay was pure gold... back in the old days, now its just rules, lower profits and tons of extras that make... it not worth bothering with.

Ebay could have made a lot more money, if they were not as greedy as they are, O-well. I was do so well from 97 till 2003 off ebay, remember getting a cd that sold for 19.95 on tv + s/h(got bulk at $4 per cd). Sold them for $13 with free s/h...Such easy profits.

As previous posters have said, it's not dead but it is super easy now to get scammed from there. If you sell any "high risk" product (as they call it) such as electronics mainly, they'll hold your funds until: you receive good feedback, three days AFTER the product has been delivered, or until 21 days have passed. Thing too, is that sellers can't leave buyer's negative feedback, only positive or neutral feedback. It's mainly a buyer's haven there and well...it's pretty sad on what ebay has become.

Ebay was ebay when it was a user environment and the corporate egos had not risen. Once that happened, it all went downhill, you can still find some good deals on ebay (as a buyer), but it's a tough road as a seller.

      Perfectly said!
I couldn't agree much more with this.
And I forgot to add too that I believe the listing fees just went up, not so sure on that though. And the reason why they hold the paypal money is because they say it's just to increase safety or whatever...

I can't speak for the US but I'll make a reasonably safe assumption that it's not any different from the one in the UK - and if that's the case I'll just say this. Stop listening to the majority. eBay has never been easier or cheaper. If however you're not prepared to research, test and put effort into figuring out how, then listen to the majority. Either way, you should still be able to make some money at it.

Ghetto..yes it is still possible to make money..and lots of it on ebay importing from china. This year on ebay i've made up to $120 day net from dropshipping a china made product. I found that selling this product at $199 free shipping gives me about $60 net profit each sold (i buy it for about $120).

The last 2 years, i've sold products..all from china..where i routinely had $300 days, $800 days, $50 days, and even $0 days...and my biggest day was about $1,200..these are all net profit figures...after all expenses.

During these past few years of importing from china, i learned that you can literally buy any major product from china, however many of them are "knock-offs" and you don't want to deal with these on ebay because they will shut your auction down and maybe cancel your account.

I didn't make all of my money from china products...I made alot of my money from 1 website called frys.com. I sold hard drives and refurbished cappuccino (i think i spelled that wrong..lol) machines.

I made between $500 and $3500 month from only using frys.com....the cappuccino (?) machines sold like crazy!!!..but i found out that the particular brand i was selling had major problems.

Those refurbished machines didn't last beyond a month, it seemed...i was making about $40-70 net per machine!!

Anyway...it is still possible....i do my research 2 ways

First......I don't sell a product unless there is a huge demand for it...what do i mean by huge?

Well, when you search completed listings..a huge market will have about 90-95% green (sold)....and there will be multiple items sold in a 24 hour period..for example....if there are 50 items listed in the completed screen and 45 are green..then you would like to see that, maybe 15 or more were sold on Feb. 12th, 2010..get it?...or 100 items were sold over a 2-day period (this is not mandatory, but is a great sign of a profitable market), especially if it's a mon, tues, wed, or thurs.

I, then, find a resource for the product.

I've left out some steps, but in general this is what i do..very simple..yet very profitable for me!

You also have to be able to analyze those "green completed markets" because you get people who don't pay..usually "0" feedback people, and some will relist that paid item and when it sells again..it's shown as 2 sells in ebay when actually it was 1

There are markets that are swarming with these types of "buyers"..i've been thru it several times...maybe i'll do a wso on this........

Second research method........ I start with a popular product and i make sure i have a resource for it and then i check ebay to see if it sells well..calculate if it can be profitable..buy low sell for profit......

Check the "green" status of the market..and take action

That's generally it..how i've been able to easily generate $50, $300, $800, and over $1000 net profit days from ebay.

Now some markets are crawling with scams on many different levels..like the cell phone market (but there is a way to get into this market selling a legitimate phone and rake in the cash..i've been doing it!) and video game consoles.

but, i will say this..agood way to make money from the video game market is not by selling the consoles themselves (per se)

I found that the xbox 360 has a particular common problem (actually built in by microsoft as many say)..not by playing it, but by my research

it's called the "3 rings of death" or "red rings of death"...on and on

well, there are people who love their 360 soooo much, that they will pay whatever to fix this or give you their "broken" xbox or at least sell it to you for cheap

Most people are lazy and don't want to go thru the trouble of fixing it (oh yes..did i mention it's very fixable?) or think that it's beyond repair

They'll pay you to do it or a guide (hint, hint)..check clickbank..there are at least 2 xbox 360 repair guides that have been selling well

Anyway, I hope you benefit from this..Ghetto..and anyone else reading.

      eric

I have noticed that many of the small sellers are gone. What we have now are the warez house guys. Yes, with cheap knock offs that almost look genuine. My favorite issue is the feebay buyer protection program. I bought a lamp $600 and it came broken...

Feebay told my to talk to preypal, and preypal told me to talk to feebay. $600 are gone! This was an expensive lesson in ecommerce.

eBay isn't dead, but its not nearly as easy or rewarding as it once was. Now its all about sourcing. You can't just go to some middlemen (and alibaba sucks, and is mostly middlemen) and buy in bulk and hope to make a profit, because the amount of sellers are huge. Chances are, someone else is buying in bulk from that same supplier and if they get each item, they have no problems with selling something for just a $1.00 profit and enough to cover eBays high fee's. It isn't too uncommon for me to buy in bulk during a sale at a retail store and sell it on eBay.

eBay is simply getting too expensive, eBay is now taking between 9 and 12 percent of a listings sold price. I haven't seen any good advertising by the company in a while either. Thats a huge cut for most people, thats why everyone is jumping ship and making their own ecommerce website and sending their ebay traffic to it.

I went to eBay live 2008, and it was horrible, and full of tension. Everyone who made their living online was pissed. Everyone was pissed about the DSR system, the feedback system, etc. One of the confrences was nearly empty. Some guy stood up and yelled at eBay and said that nobody else was going to come because they were ran out of business by eBays system and pricing.

Every serious eBay seller clinges onto the hope that Google is going to come in and blow eBay out of the water.

eBay isn't impossible to make money from, you just have to do some great research (terapeak) make great listing templates that are attractive, cross promote other similar items, and make a good SEO title. You also need to find products that are actually in demand. No sense in putting something up on eBay that nobody wants.

Here's a tip for building repeat business:

One of the things that always amazes me is how eBay sellers waste the opportunity to sell to me after the sale.

This month alone I have purchased 6 products on eBay. Only one was from an individual looking to unload something that was collecting dust in his garage. All of the other items were from repeat sellers; two were from Power Sellers.

Not one of them put anything inside the box other than the product.
      • No Thank You Note with an offer to join their list.
      • No sell sheet or catalog showcasing their other products
      • No discount coupon for a future purchase
      • No link to their online store

In short -- NOTHING to build continuity and keep their brand on my radar. What a waste!

It hardly, and I mean HARDLY makes an impact. I've used a catalog method, ecommerce coupon code for my ecommerce website, a thank you note (even asking for high DSR Ratings) - it doesn't really matter. This was tested with over 10,000 buyers on eBay.

Some items have of course reached critical mass, books for instance never seem to do all that well compared to Amazon but I have never tried it, you should probably try to be original and get there first.

Remember the ebay lump of coal or the million dollar homepage or the Simon Cowell/RatM facebook marketing ploy?

Of course you have to remember that as soon as you have done it, millions of people will follow suit since most people lack imagination for themselves :p

I started out selling on Ebay many years ago and did well.....initially. Today I've stopped, mainly due to an inability to find reliable, low priced suppliers. As others have said, there are a bunch of "fakes" out there and unless you are experienced its easy to fall victim.

Also Ebay's increasingly tightened rules and TOS make it more difficult as well.

as for me I didn't make a business on e-Bay. I use it as a buyer mostly. But a friend of mine makes quite good money there. She went through mistakes till the moment she started to get a profit. That's what she told me.

She closed her store of listings a few times. Once she discovered that she didn't connect her expenses with her sails. That's why she changed the pricing policy watching pricing of her competitors. Then she began working on branding her store with a listing template and opened one more store. She also also noticed that stocking her store can help to get more profit.

That was enough to see a steady increase in sales after a few months. She invested in Selling Manager to keep track, customized customer service emails, created a Return/Refund Policy, switched to the USPS for shipping and kept customers updated with any transaction changes. All these actions helped her business to pick up quickly.
So what you can take from this story? To achieve success on e-Bay you must
    1. Watch for you competitors and learn from them
    2. Make right pricing
    3. Brand your product anв store
    4. Provide your customers with services

The UK eBay is going crazy; more items for sale the USA eBay in a lot of categories.

Now in some cases it's cheaper to buy off Amazon then eBay for DVD's because eBay fees with Paypal run like 10% - 15% of gross sale.

Now when shipping from USA to overseas, the post office wants you to know the weight of each item in you box, this is a recent change for shipping overseas. So if you have five different items being shipped in the same box, they want to know the weight of each item in that box.

I've been on USA eBay for 10 years; it's gone down hill in the past 5 years, less and less stuff being listed all the time.

Yes some categories are still selling well.

There are far more buyers than sellers on ebay. It is still lucrative. Chances are you are not going to find a niche that is untapped. The trick is to find one that is not flooded. From that point, you position your company as the "go to" for that product. With everything else equal, customers will go with the specialist. Now, you just have to look like the specialist. If you want to do some really good research on what sells and who is selling it, you should check out terapeak (.com).

On eBay, a niche is a pre-established market of a certian product. Like most markets, products are created, thus new niches are created. Sometimes, this is a whole new trend, and sometimes this is an innovated product.

For example, this year in clothing, Pea-Cocking will become very popular. Very bright multi-colored clothing. This is a trend, and you can prepare yourself by purchasing bulk amounts of this style clothing or even producing your own.

An example of an innovated product would be the jump from:

      Heres one Niche

      Which then turned into

      Which is now

Of course, you could sell "Watches" but you could also go the micro-niche route and sell and focus only on "Digital Watches" or focus only on "Techy LED Watches" or you could sell old "Antique Pocket Watches"

So, all Niches aren't tapped, that would be impossible, as each day more are being made and some are being faded out.

I don't think its dead at all. I think the trick is to find a product no one is selling or that no one is getting from the best source out there...the manufacture. A lot of times ebay sellers are using dropship programs and wholesale list etc. Don't be like the rest and you won't have the rest's problems (or should I say problems like the rest: not turning a profit)

        Best of luck!

it is hard to make sales for new seller since they introduce best match & TRS.

previously every listing will have equal exposure base on the listing time, but now your listing will rank according to many factor, such as your sales record for the pass 7 days, your feedback score etc.

if you are new and do not have previous sale, your listing will rank far behind without any exposure. (but you still have to pay the same amount of listing fee)

the TRS program will allow buyer to filter the search result to show only listing from TRS seller, so if you are not a TRS and have no previous sale, you are likely to pay the listing fee for nothing.

the system is unfair to certain seller, but it will make more money for ebay, because all listing show on page 1 (all the time) will be the listing from seller with sale record and have a good feedback score. this will increase the sell through ratio for ebay and gather all the sale to certain seller.

i previously make good sale on ebay, but it is really hard now.

    Nothing to say really.

If you want to make money with ebay you can,
don't let anyone tell you or feed you infomation
    why YOU can't do it.

So what it didn't work for them, just because
they fell of the bike and didn't get back on doesn't
mean you have to follow the same fate...

Do what makes you happy, and follow a proven
system that you believe will bring you most success.

eBay is still alive and kicking although you need to sell in bulk in order to make a decent living. I started a shop last summer during the recession and it grew over 400% a month.

I agree that ebay is still alive, it is a bit of a saturated market so it depends on the niche. But also think selling in bulk is a key advantage.

Not on eBay. Selling in Bulk actually kind of sucks, but buying in Bulk on eBay is awesome because of this.

My uncle buys used stuff on ebay, fixes it up and sells it back on Ebay at a profit. Not a large profit, but it's worth his while.

In my humble opinion, ebay is like any other competitive market place. You can make good money but you need an edge, a competitive advantage.

Buying on line is now the norm and a novelty like it used to be so normal business practices are the rule again.

It's just like any other saturated market, you need a rare and definite value proposition. Whether that's selling in bulk, fixing up old stuff, or going really niche... but it's not going to work if you're just like the other sellers.

I think the old ebay was a whole lot better.

These days it seems that ebay has placed all the power in the hands of the consumer. For many transactions, it's not an issue. But problems occur when you encounter less than honest people.

One client had a guy claim that the products were never received, even after shipping replacements to the same address a second time. Next, this guy left nasty negative feedback, not once but for each product purchased, so my client had a whole string of negatives right at the top of the page after building up hundreds of positive comments over several years as a seller. (Ebay has removed the right of sellers to respond to negatives). Then this same guy filed a complaint with ebay demanding a full refund and ebay sided with the fraudulent buyer.

        Not very seller-friendly anymore.

    IMO... Ebay is DDEEAADD!

They ruined my whole business by closing their Adcommerce PPC service in the US and Canada...

I was pulling 30-130 per day... consistent profit...

Just ended in a blink of an eye....

They change their rules too much...I hate that.

But in reality, It all depends on which product you sell, and at what price.
    That will dictate your success.

And my personal advice....stay away from dropshipping...

I made decent money selling music CD's on ebay. I also wrote an ebook on how to do it. If anyone wants a FREE copy then you can download it here.
The 'here' is not the link to the download you are offering. It is a link to your article on Articles Base where you describe the eBook. This is deceptive as it takes readers to your article about the eBook. The link at the bottom of that article takes you to a reported Malware site. That's definitely not good, either!

It seems like people are selling. I see more sellers now than ever before. I think it all depends on the market. I don't see as many power sellers though, but this could just be a perception.

I don't think Ebay is dead, but many of my friends do prefer using Amazon over Ebay. They say they can find discounted and cheap products on Amazon much easily, while still maintaining the quality of the product bought.

Ebay is still profitable and there are plenty of items that can be acquired for next to nothing other than your time to get them. Many of these items would depend upon your location and proximity to certain areas of the U.S. These items won't replace your fulltime job but could get you some extra cash to pay bills.

I am a very experienced Ebayer. I started in 1998. eBay has undergone massive changes since the beginning. I am actually finishing the editing on a book I wrote about how to be successful on "today's" eBay. Money can still be made, but it's not like the old days High eBay fees, internet fraud, crazy shipping costs, competition from China, all take a bite of of your bottom line. But don't lose heart, eBay is still a viable source of income if you do it right!

eBay is not dead although with the new fees it entails more work to find profitable products. The key is getting your listing seen but there are some simple changes that can move you up. Selling in bulk no longer results in lower fees so buying to resell will be harder to do. The key is finding a good reliable product source or even creating your own.

I believe EBay is over saturated now a days. Most of the time you do not even make a profit of more than $3 after all your eBay fees, PayPal fee, and shipping.
