Has Twitter Cracked Down or what?

I'm curious about whether Twitter has been axing spammers and aggressive marketers in the last two months? I'll admit, I really have not paid attention at all.

What I have noticed is that I'm stuck on about 6700 followers and it's been that way for 2 months. Now I don't use any auto follow scripts, don't really promote my Twitter page or anything like that. I just let followers come as they come.

However, it's been stagnant for about 2 solid months. I'm assuming I gain 10 followers and lose 9 due to Twitter deleting the accounts. I'm not sure. I'm am sure I have a ton of garbage followers though. I'm assuming Twitter is cleaning house.

Could this be why I'm not gaining any traction?

I've done nothing really different then I've ever done which is just be myself. Kinda odd.

yeh, they delete serial account creators, spammers and what not for ages, plus they've started to suspend those who's time lines consist of stuff that just breaks their rules

Yes, but they were fine once we explained that we don't use proxies and we utlilize the Twitter API to enforce rate limits.

We did have to remove some wording from the site.

Its called the "Twitter Slap" .........actually, I just made that up...haha, if it sticks, remember, I said it first. Anybody using all automation, posting the same URL, someone only posting URLs and not live comments are all getting suspended.

I am down here in Pt Loma Jason, we should talk shop sometime? We share many mutual friends.

Over the last few months my twitter followers have been increasing at a strange rate.. in the last 24 hours I gained just under 100 new followers (around 70+) and it's been like that for a while now.

Again the same as you I don't use any voodoo scripts or really promote it (not even on the WF), but still the followers keep coming.

Could be something to do with catching a niche trend at the right time or something. I have no idea why you're stuck on 6000+ though.

I wondered if there was a capacity problem so that with programs like Twittollower adding new Followers daily at quite a rate (within the rules) the older accounts were slowed to allow for all the new "action" going on?

      Jason,

It's possible that you're gaining traction and just don't see it. If your increase in real followers is equal to their removal of spammers and bulk followers who wouldn't read your stuff anyway, you're improving despite their total.

I am glad that Twitter will finally be a little bit of a "cleaner" place, so to speak.

It gets very tiring sorting through all of the spam in order to get to the good stuff. Maybe this will help.

    Best,
    Shane

So as long as your using a service that uses the twitter API you should be safe when using some automation ?

  • Here are some things that they may be quietly cracking down - to name a few:

    * Accounts with high follow/unfollow churn rate - i.e. follow and unfollow a large number of people within short periods of time

    * Accounts that post excessive content

    * Accounts that post duplicate content

    * Accounts that try to trick the system - e.g. by posting the same content, deleting it, and again reposting

Beware of automation programs that promise you a large number of followers quickly and are not smart enough to handle Twitter's constantly changing TOS. Detecting such accounts isn't that difficult for Twitter. As with anything else, it is the quality of followers that matters, not quantity.
