Competing with ones self

Hello.

I'm planning on creating and selling content in my chosen niche, which is music/pro audio/samples.

I was putting myself in the shoes of a potential buyer, (and I do spend tons of money on products in my niche)

While I had initially planned on building up an extensive catalogue of products for my main site, it occurred to me that it might be better to spread the products out over a number of sites, all with different design styles, and different "attitudes".

So rather than have 100 products offered on one site, I could spread them (without duplicates?) over several sites, say 4 or 5 for starters.

Does this sound prudent, or could it be more hassle than its worth?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I would carefully optimize a single site. Once it became successful, I'd test the competing-against-myself theory only when it made economic sense. Doing a good site of any kind is not trivial.

I'd do both...4-5 tightly themed individual sites and one master site that carries it all. Just makes for more entry points in the search engines.

Thanks for the tips. I like the idea of the master site, and if any of the other styles prove successful, perhaps focus more energy on that site.
