What's a Good Color Scheme for a Woman Related Site?

Hi guys,

My new website will be catering more towards females about 80-20 so I feel it would be wise to build the website with them in mind.

At the same time, I don't want to alienate any of the male visitors so i need a proper color scheme to satisfy both.

In other words I need it to be "strong enough for a man, but made for a woman".

Any ideas? I was kind of leaning more towards a peachy color.

Thanks.

Is there something different about female eyes?

Because, I don't know, I thought they could see all the same colours men could.

      a) See what the popular sites in your niche do. b) Color Combinations | Color Schemes | Color Palettes!

I figure a properly configured color scheme that is more attractive to women would immediately catch their eye when they open my web page and tell them that this site is definitely for them.

This is the same tactic a lot of online women magazines use too.

I'm just hoping to lower their guard a bit. Plus, I want to be a little different since most other marketing sites scream out "Hey, I've got something to sell you here"!

I think more subtle colors would kind of ease their apprehension a bit.

      On a Side Note:

Why do some sales pages use blue or red headlines. Can't everyone see black?

What ever colour you pick just make sure that the writing is easy to read. The number of sites I have gone onto and clicked off straight away for this very reason.

Personally I would go for a peach color scheme, that way you won't be putting off the 20% of male visitors you will be getting. A overwhelming pink may be good for the girls but will be off putting for the guys.

as a designer, here are some colours that would be nice:

    Code:
    #E94E77
    A deep and rich pink

    Code:
    #D68189
A more mellow pink (for highlighting possibly?)

    Code:
    #C6A49A
    A light chocolatey colour.

    Code:
    #C6E5D9
    A green-blue turquoise mix.

    Code:
    #F4EAD5
A wicked light yellow papyrusy colour.

Here is a quick pallate I made in photoshop:

Hmmm, I'm not very fond of peach. Have you ever thought of using black gradient fading into a deep pink color. Brown and blue (teal) would also be gorgeous, especially if you accent it with yellow. If you were making this theme for me, I would ask you to use the last three colors in Mubarak's post but just make the Brown and Blue darker. If you are building this site for a client, then you may want to email them for an opinion

These will show you the colors that are right now and next season in terms of fashion trends. Just turn that hotel picture in the last link into a Wordpress theme, and you're set for the year!

The earlier post suggesting womens' magazines is also a great idea. Stop by the bookstore and pick up Oprah, Woman's Day, Family Circle, Cosmopolitan, etc. Identify five things that they all do in terms of design (hint: one of them is open space), and put those elements into your site.

Besides seconding Chris's suggestion above for using COLOURlovers :: Color Trends + Palettes, I also suggest you to check out this site from Adobe: kuler.

Most brands seem to make use of pink unless they focus on one specific niche (like green/blue for health). Two of these are glam.com and sugar sites (popsugar.com and others.) Common trait for these two are that they combine pink with greys. The "strong enough for a man, but made for a woman" can be achieved by such a combination. In glam.com grey is dominant overall but there is also an in-your-face pink header. A more subtle pink element that goes with grey tones may be appropriate for you.

That's brand new for me and it rocks. With the beta Pulse feature, you can slide "Granularity" all the way to the left and see the most popular colors at a glance on the color wheel.

      Thanks!

Wow, everyone has been so responsive.

I appreciate the links and advice. I've narrowed my choices down to 2 colors and will split test to see which one converts better (assuming the color scheme would really make that much of a difference).

That's true, in the end it probably has little to do with the color. It's more about how you present your offer. Copywriting far outweighs color when it comes to making sales. Unless, of course, you go crazy with the color text as some people like to do.

Stick with red and black, with yellow highlight to accentuate certain points. Don't make the mistake of going with pale blues, pale pinks or shocking pastels just because you're targeting women. If they can't read the text, or if their eyes are overwhelmed with all the distractions (because that's what excessive use of color is), then you will lose a lot of them.

What is the target niche of the website?

I think you have to start with that as the main deciding factor of color scheme, then look at a way to make it suitable for women.

For example, a site about parenting would work well with pink & blue, a site about fitness would work well with blue and white, a site about weight loss would work well with blue and green.

My suggestion is to look at what the most common color schemes are in your niche, and then soften those colors into a light almost pastel shade.

You don't want to be targeting women well but inadvertently miss your niche in the process.

Why not look at some of the top sites such as Microsoft, Yahoo, Dell computer,
Amazon, etc and see what color schemes they use?

Big companies pay designers big bucks to test and determine best colors, schemes, designs etc.

Take advantage of their marketing dollars and copy everything but their words.

My pick would be a pink and black or pink and dark brown, but my favorite color is pink. On the other hand I know some woman who absolutely hate the color pink. I think it depends on the niche and what you are trying to sell.
