My Friend In The Snow In A Bikini: Is she nuts? Or a committed marketer? Or should be committed?

I've met Mary Wilhite twice now - at the WF Networking in Raleigh and at the NAMS Workshop in Atlanta. We sat down in Atlanta on my last day there, and she did a very good one-hour interview (grilling) of me and my list building/management. We even went for a good brisk walk in the cold.

Seemed to be sane enough to me, until today. Mary sent me this video. I asked her if that was greenscreen. Nope, she is actuially standing out in the cold in her bikini. I can only imagine what the neighbours think now.

So, is it nuts? Is it a good way to grab attention? Will people get her message? Will some watch the video a second time? Will anyone believe that Mary is 50?

Hopefully this doesn't violate the avatar rule, LOL

All I can say is, "Mary! You gotta lot more guts than I do!" On the other hand, no one wants to see me in a speedo - snow or not.

You know, it just might work. She may have been going for multiple viewings. The fourth or fifth time that someone plays this video for a friend saying "Can you believe this nut?" the message may sink in. I'm sure her website has seen a pretty good spike in first-time viewers because of this video.

By the way, thanks for not sending us a video of you in a speedo!

    Will

Great marketing. Do something different and unexpected, and you've got your viewer's attention.

      Unique is good.

And Kevin, please stop tempting us. Get into your mankini, shoot a new video, and watch your sales skyrocket. Hey, worth a split test?

I can't believe that my most famous work isn't a client's design - merely a photograph of Kevin Riley in a Mankini. I should have had it framed and sold it at Sotheby's.

Mary actually is 50. First time I met her, I thought she was in her 30s. Then, Elmer Hurlstone spilled the beans to me. Since then, I've gotten to know Mary quite well and I can attest that she is 50.

Yes of course, it tells a lot about me because that was
my opinion, and it's what I thought of after watching it.

Remember, I said "it's what I would think more of" and
didn't said that it was the motive for the act in the video.

Remember, you can't control the perception of people.
You could only do what you think would be good, but it's
still up to those who will see it, to think for themselves.

As for Mary, I know it took a lot of effort to do the thing.
Can you imagine standing outside at low temperatures with
only your undergarments on. In fact I assume that some
mistakes in her dialog was due to the freezing feeling she's
having while doing it. It's not easy.

I commend her for the effort, but not for the method.

        As for you JustMint,

        Geessh..think before you talk man.

I remember Mary from the Raleigh event also. She's such a nice person and has a great personality. I hope the video goes viral and works out the way she wants.

If the IM niche doesn't work for her, she could definitely clean up in the 'fit over 40' market.

This is what I was thinking. She looks fabulous (especially for her age!) but I don't know how much this will help help her selling an IM product.

But if this same approach was used to market diet / fitness / maintain your youth products I think she would have excellent results.

I'm sure a ton of people have commented on how this is unique and gains the viral effect because of that.

I noticed one thing she could have done better. Her URL wasn't watermarked or displayed more prominently. I know she probably has that in the youtube description .. but it'd have improved her conversions if she had a shorter URL and have had it displayed accross the whole video or at least in a 5 second slide at the end.

    I don't get it either.

Personally, it feels more like a self interest video saying "look at me, i am 50 and I work out and look great!"

But that's about as far as my comprehension went with this.

And the whole doing this in freezing snow weather is actually just kinda weird if you ask me. Seems a little bit desperate.

Anyway, she looks great...and I am sure she's lovely too. Perhaps a weight loss product pitch is more suitable?

If she was in the fitness niche then it would be perfect to do something like that but I don't see how that really fits in this niche. I guess she figures most of her demographics is men.

Hey if it works for her I guess go for it but I think it comes off a bit desperate.

I would be more impressed if she stood out in the snow in her bikini here in Minneapolis, MN where it's really cold. Ha-ha.

But yea she's in incredible shape. I don't even remember what she was talking about in the video. Something about being broke, and snowing in Atlanta. I was distracted. :p

Most chicks can look that good at 50, all they have to do is want it bad enough to work at it. My woman is nearly 52 and looks just as good - but she gets up at 5:10 am and works out for 40 minutes before going to work her 10-11 hour day...

It's good to see your efforts are getting the snow-melting attention you deserve.

As far as if you need to be committed or not:

If you'll commit to continue posting updates in your bikini,
I'll commit to continue to appreciate them.

All good-natured/intended kidding aside, I think the contrast
is hot in season and out of season.

Shows you're not moved by external factors and are
committed to do the best for your clients regardless of "the weather".

Interesting Kevin, how you chose the word "committed" because
that underscores the unique commitment to excellence in business
unlike others who may only be "fair-weather friends" if the conditions are right.

That's my take and I'm sticking with it. (For now, just kidding!)

    Kevin -

So many thoughts but I'll keep my mouth shut.

Let me just say this - how many successful people do you see pimping themselves out in a bikini?

You'd think for someone who is 50 she'd have more common sense than that.

    Oh well.

Embarrassed for her? Are you kidding? I met Mary and even up close she doesn't look 50. I was so not believing it she finally offered to show me her driver's license. She's a lovely woman inside and out. I am totally not surprised to see this video. LOL

      Robin -

I don't mean her body. At 50 I am sure she looks great. My thing opinion is just when it comes to marketing that's all.

Show me one head of state or well known internet marketing person doing a video in a two piece bikini? I think she has a great message (same exact one Kevin spoke on at the WF seminar) but I think it gets lost.

      It's not a dramatic demonstration to me - it's a desperate one.

What happens if she decides to drop this as quick as she has other methods and make another run for the senate (without the whole "fat pig" thing)? This could come back to haunt her.

I wish her the best and am sure she will do well with a certain market.

      Tim

PS: To be clear this is not an attack on any single person - just my observation of a marketing method that I am not a fan of.

I think it was Dan Kennedy who said, "Offend 30% of your market"... or something like that. Some of the savvy top marketers surely understand this all to well. I've seen top marketers actually stir up debate and controversy just to get people active.

It takes the spot light and puts it square on you. I'm not saying that is what Mary did, but I have a feeling her thoughts that provoked this were in the RIGHT direction marketing wise.

I'll say this and then stop... and Mary if you happen on to this post... hope you get what I'm saying here...

Most in this market are too afraid to even use their real names. They use screen names and hide behind message boards and the Internet. They are brave to throw out criticism quickly and love to wallow in gossip and rock throwing.

Most never do anything, or try anything outside of a comfort zone. They post with authority as if they've actually ever done anything or made more than a couple grand online.

Most have no guts. Most would never even pick up a microphone on a tele-seminar, or much less get in front of a crowd of people at a marketing event. What matters most is taking action and doing things. What matters is throwing yourself out there and making things happen. What matters most is escaping comfort zones. You did that and I applaud you.

If you remember, I spoke about "courage" at the seminar in Austin you ran with Jason F. I think I got a standing ovation right? This is the exact thing I was talking about.

Screw what people think. Just take action, massive action and let the chips fall where they may. As long as you provide good value with integrity, you're good to go.

It captured attention like the best "pattern interrupts" around.

              "fortune favors the bold!"

I guess I just don't get it. I don't see how standing in the snow in a bikini has anything to with her message. She talks about being broke and now making money online but from the looks of the video it looks like she can't afford a winter coat for herself.

Also, great that she keeps in shape and healthy but what does being 50 years old and looking like she does have to do with Internet marketing? From the comments on this thread I can tell a lot of people are more focused on her body than her message so what good does that do? Then again, this video may greatly increase her profits and traffic and I can be completely wrong.

** I'm not some kind of feminist that sees what she is doing is wrong, I guess I just don't see the connection here. Would love a follow up on the video to see how successful it is in a few months.

Nah, you're safe there, but I'm surprised the thread didn't get deleted for self-promotion since the web site Mary wants everyone to visit has a link right under the video for an offer that reads, "List Building with Mary Wilhite & Kevin Riley".

Just to clarify. That is not my product. That is Mary's. She interviewed me, as I stated in the OP.

Also, the link is not here. It's on her blog. That means you have to go from here to You Tube. Then, from You Tube to her blog. Then from her blog to her sales page. How many degrees of seperation do you require?

IMO, if Mary had posted this it could be considered slightly self-promoting (if there was a link here to her blog, which there isn't). As I posted it only after she sent me the video (which was done because we were chatting on Skype, as she had just put up the interview of me for sale - again, I reiterate that I have no interest in the proceeds of sale of this interview, and am only the interviewee) and thought it was an interesting study - especially as I wasn't too sure of my own feelings of the video - I do believe this was a good study and discussion of marketing, no self-promotion intended..

You may not know me as well as some, but the mods here do, and I have never been accused of self-promotion. Accused of posting off topic or stupidity, but never self-promotion.

EDIT: Sorry, I stand corrected. Seems there is now a link on the YT video that goes to SP not blog. Still, IMO, not a problem as there is no promotion here nor in the video.

If you Google the term Mary instructs the first link takes you straight to her blog with the "Mary and Kevin" link. That's one degree of separation, so it's not as great as you suggest. You may not have a financial interest in the product, but are any of your products promoted in the interview? Even if the answer is no, it still does promote your name, doesn't it?

I'm not trying to make trouble here, if I wanted to do that I'd have reported the thread. I'm just trying to understand why the rules all of a sudden seem arbitrary. I guess the lesson is, if we want to promote something we just have a friend do it for us, eh? Gotcha! And when we all do that, this forum turns into just what the no self-promotion rule was designed to prevent, with one degree of separation, of course, so that makes it all right according to you.

Mary is a beautiful woman, and you're a clever fellow to bend the rules like this, but if everyone did that this forum would would go straight downhill, don't you think? John promotes Joe's product, a week later Joe promotes Johns product. Then Clem and Jake get in on the act, then Alice and Gertrude. Then Sam, Jen, and Bill go three-way with it so it's less obvious. What would the forum be like then, Kevin?

I hope I'm wrong, but I can see all the forum spammers making deals with their buddies right now. I think you've set a bad precedent here.

Grasping at straws? If you Google the term? Yeah, I'll bet there's been just a huge number of people doing that. Maybe you haver nothing better to do in your life, but I can't really see too many suddenly getting inspired to Google a term after seeing a post with a video in it.

Nope. I believe at the end Mary did ask me what my main site was. That's par for any interview. No product was promoted. It was just an informative interview shot while I was waiting to leave Atlanta. And, I don't think I need more promotion of my name here. Most Warriors know who I am. However, you've done a damn good job of promoting this interview of Mary's with all your innuendos. I shall ask her to send you a thank you card.

No offense, but this is internet marketing, being in a bathing suit to promote your business is completely irrelevant and IMHO sleaze marketing.

Kind of ridiculous for a 50 year old women to stand around in a bikini just to try and get some extra exposure for her youtube video, I understand that you are attempting to be quirky and unusual, but it is very unlikely this video is going to go viral, I truly hope it does and wish you the best, but at this point you are just exploiting yourself for less than 1,000 youtube views. If that was my mom I would give her an earfull.

I feel that the negative impact on credibility as the spokesperson and creator of your product will outweigh any potential increased viewership this advertisement would elicit.

You are an attractive older woman and obviously very intelligent, but I feel you're selling yourself short....

ahhah, true, I'm not arguing against that ad from any moral or ethical standpoint, I just feel that there are better ways to promote this kind of product and that particular method is innappropriate. When I'm buying marketing literature I'd look for intelligent, authoritative marketing,

It's entertaining and unusual - but wouldn't cause me to take her seriously as a business person.

As a woman I think it's a bit silly but definitely might gain attention.
    As a marketer, I think it's lame.

Bikini in the snow would be a great angle for a workout site, though.

I don't really think it works - bit too gimicky and the image has nothing with the dream she's selling. Standing outside in the cold in a bikini? Not sure what it's got to do with the 'internet lifestyle' most are chasing.

On the other hand - you living in Japan, running a business from your own home does it for me since that's what my idea of a good time is!

I found this thread because Kevin mentioned me in it and it popped up on a Google alert for my name.

Naturally, because I know both Mary and Kevin I watched the video. But only a couple or twelve times.

Let's face it, most of us, for a variety of reasons, couldn't successfully pull off something so seemingly outlandish.

There appear to be conflicting opinions on the usefulness of this as a marketing method. To say the least it's a bit controversial.

Controversy is not always a bad thing. Quite a few of us are old enough to remember ABC Sports commentator Howard Cosell. During his tenure at ABC he was hated by half his audience and loved by the other half.

And it all added up to ratings. Fans and detractors watched and ABC profited.

Many of the comments in this thread have referred to Mary's stunning physique. Male and female posters have mentioned that she is in, obviously, great shape/condition. And rightly so.

One thing I've learned from hanging around here for the past few years is to listen to the market and it will tell you what it wants.

This following bit is personal for Mary:

      Mary,

It looks like the folks here think your video is fine for the fitness/health niche, particularly the "over 40" section of it.

You may wish to seriously consider working that.

So, the next time it snows in Atlanta, grab your camera and a white or blue bikini (I don't care for hot pink) and get to work.

I would have thought a long time member such as yourself would welcome a chance to educate me as to why the rules are not arbitrary. Maybe my mistake was not sending you a PM with my concerns, but I thought others might learn something too.
