How to Find a Niche Market to Begin With?

I've got Samurai booted up, flicking through a few things, but generally how do you begin to find a market? Do you start by analyzing the offers available and working from there or pick at random?

I usually look at my computer desk to find random crap, right now:

    swiss army penknife
    remote control
    rizla rolling paper
    ashtray
    wind up torch
    angel and dexter dvd
    wallet
    lighter
    recordable cd
    cup

Now try looking on the floor and we will see:

    rug/carpet
    extension cable

The lists go on and on

It is as good as any other method and lets face it, if I actually have those items and can see them on my desk at least I can write more than a couple of sentences due to actually knowing about them...rather than simply doing research and basically the time honored bovine scatological method

For beginners it's easier to find a well converting product and then look for obscure yet hot keywords to rank for.

Go on clickbank and look for something with a gravity between 25-100. (so its selling but there's not too much competition)

Then try and hammer down some long tail keywords you can rank for in that niche.

          A great example:

On clickbank, you find a product on "how to play guitar". Then put that main keyword into samurai, and google adwords keyword tool, and start finding long tail keywords in that niche...

how to play acoustic guitar online
how to play a guitar online
learn how to play a guitar online
how to play the electric guitar online
          how to play guitar books

If the keyword has less than 35,000 results in the exact match in google (meaning when you type the keyword with "" around it) and over 1000 searches a month, than it's worth trying to rank for.

          hope this helped -Matt

    James,

if you have got Market Samurai then I suggest that you find Ed Dales 30 Day Challenge 2009 as he explaines exactly how to find to use MS to find a niche market.

In fact on day two the owner of Market Samurai takes you through the steps himself.

It will save you loads of time rather than trawling through the answers here.

Also, do a search at the top of the page and you will see lots of answers to this very question.

Good luck and please do follow the 30 day challenge as it will be a tremendous help to you.

      Thanks Gary.

I'll take a look at that. I purchased MS about a week ago but only just found the time to sit down with it.

In that case you will love the step by step instructions in 30DC. You will be able to hit the ground running and put it to good use.

I like to look for niches with higher ticket items and continuity affiliate programs .. so I've got something to promote before I start.

Yeah, I was trying that just. I found a niche, but to build a site around that is hard when you cant find the offers. I've found 1 or 2, but I don't want to stick the offer in every post ... but by not doing that I'd be throwing potential sales down the shute.

Have people actually done that 30 day challenge and made an income from it?

Man, you answered your question. But I would say that it's necessary to do the systematic research, not just browsing offers. I made a decision about the niche for my business after I had read forum posts and a few e-books about how to find the right niche, had bought market researches where I had learned the value of niches and quantity of competitors, watched for other businesses. These steps helped me to prove my decision.

I use terapeak.com (paid service) to find the hot searches people are looking for. I also use Amazon.com which gives you great research without paying for it. Just look for their bestsellers.

You can also go to Amazon and The Dummies Book store. That will give you great ideas for a niche. I just look through the categories. I find one I am interested in, then go to Clickbank and see if they have a product for it.
