    Gimp - GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program is your best bet for FREE. Other than that Paint Shop Pro but that costs about $99 and it is pretty darned good.

    There are plenty of video tutorials for Gimp.
    After you master that find video tutorials for Photoshop
    it is well worth it.
    It's like the difference between an old Front Page html editor and
    Dreamweaver.

    Gimp is a really good alternative , besides GIMP i often use Paint.net --
    web --> getpaint.net program , it too supports layers like photoshop and is relatively user friendly than GIMP or PS

    You can rely on GIMP. It is one of the best alternatives to Photoshop, but if you are looking forward for a great designing/editing tool, there is only Photoshop !!

    I have photshop elements and I've used GIMP, and I have some
    other things for making letters and ebook covers, but for 90%
    of my graphics I use Paint.net - it opens fast, is easy to use
    and learn. It's reached the point where it's got some cool plugins
    and if you learn the ropes you can do very cool work with it. I'm
    not sure I would call it "mature" (as in bloated with features,
    complicated and slow to load) but it's darned useful on an
    everyday basis.

    Here's another one for you. This one is free and runs online. You can use it to open Photoshop files and it will keep all the layers separate for you.

          Another vote for Paint.net

          GIMP has an unusual interface, likely because it originated on Linux. Being a linux user myself and using it for years I actually prefer the Gimp interface but most every windows person I talked to hates it. It really is optimized for speed but it can be very frustrating for some, and thats why for new people I recommend paint.net.


          Here is a good list of some of freeware alternatives.

          Don't pirate Photoshop. If you can squeak by with another freeware program you should do it. If later down the road you find you need the more advanced features of Photoshop you can probably afford it by then. Pirating as a person is a bad idea, Pirating for business is a really bad idea.

    I'm going to agree with the gimp users...I've used photoshop and fireworks...but honestly gimp is free, and has a very easy to use user interface (just takes a little getting used to...once you get used to it you will fly...

      That's been the most common complaint I've heard, that it's very hard to figure out, and it does have a learning curve associated with it. But if you can get the hang of the interface it's quite a bit faster, especially for repetitive stuff like thumbnailing.
