Hey All,

I have never used go daddy for purchasing a site but today i decided to try it out. I was about to buy one sie and a months hosting.

When i clicked to pay (with paypal) They would only accept a papal accunt which was linked to a credit or debit card.

The paypal account which I was using is a stand alone account not linked to any bank acount or credit card.

What does everyone make of this? I am reluctant to give them the details of my papal account which is linked to my bank account debit card (VISA)

Is go daddy a safe site to submit such details? Im afraid they will continue my hosting package on a recurring basis from my debit account.

Thanks,

Duncanb

As for being safe Go Daddy is as safe as anyone else online. By default they may set your domain name registration as "auto-renew", you can change this on your Domain Manager page.

Personally I wouldn't use them for hosting. Buy your domain name from them and then get a hosting account at Hostgator. They let you pay monthly, you can pay with PayPal and you can probably Google for a coupon to get your hosting for just a penny for your first month.

And their control panel is much nicer than Go Daddy's - I setup a script for a friend using Go Daddy and it took over an hour to create a MySQL database. On Hostgator this takes a few milliseconds. It also took forever to setup another FTP account on Go Daddy, again Hostgator does it instantly. And Hostgator support is great.

Also, NameCheap has a lot of advantages over Go Daddy for domain names, and PayPal is their choice of payment.

You really should not host with godaddy. Using them for domains is fine but leave the hosting alone.

Whether it is godaddy or any other company you should never purchase your domains and hosting from the same company.

Having said that I have given godaddy my cc info for domain purchases and have never had a problem with them billing me when they should not though by default all domains are put on a auto-renewal and you need to change it if you do not want that to happen.

Hi duncanb, I am a little confused by your questions. You state that your PayPal account is a "stand alone account not linked to any bank account or credit card", but then you've stated that you are "reluctant to give them the details of my paypal account which is linked to my bank account debit card (VISA)". I am not trying to be rude, I am just confused My dealings with GoDaddy have been very smooth so far, you have the option to have recurring payments on a given service if you so choose, they will not keep billing you unless you have a recurring payment setup. As far as giving your details of your PayPal account to them, I am not sure what details they are asking for, but all they (GoDaddy) should be doing is redirecting you to a PayPal purchase page. If this assumption is in-correct, please say so and elaborate the process that they are sending you through I agree with the others comments, buy the domain from them, but find another hosting company Cheers, Connor

Don't use GD. Period. Especially not for hosting.

Get a registrar like namecheap PLUS any decent host company - there are few mentioned always with high recommendations.

Never keep the domain (registration) and server (host) with the same company!

You're safe with GoDaddy. I use them to buy my domains and have been for years on end.

Their hosting however is just plain awful.

Hostgator for hosting is like Walmart. They're fine, they'll do the job, but I never prefer them

      1. you can pay with a credit card # on godaddy. It is safe, and you can call them if something gets messed up with the order and they will refund you.

      2. Do not get your hosting there - only the domain.

      3. Google "godaddy coupon" and you can get more off your purchase.

      4. Buy only what you need - they will encourage you to buy several things but if you just want one domain that is all you should purchase

      5. If you want privacy, a cheap way to get it is to buy 4 .infos. These are 89 cents, and when you buy 5 domains in one shot, the privacy is FREE for all of them.

      6. Were you considering making a blog? If so, please pm me as I have something I need tested and you will learn from it.

I was surprised at so many negative comments for godaddy.
It is interesting because it is exactly where lots of programs suggest you go for getting a domain. In fact most.

The only strong negative having to do with Godaddy is when you have
domain registration AND hosting from them. There have been reports of
them freezing BOTH hosting and domain after a spam complaint. That
said, I have a bunch of domains registered with them. Safe. No complaints.

First off to address your original concern:
"They would only accept a papal account which was linked to a credit or debit card.

This is a security issue. PayPal is like any other financial institution except they are always trying to secure your identity, since it was created online. A credit card or bank account just lends weight that you are who you are.

My personal experience is with PayPal is great have business accounts and personal accounts. All are fully verified ( they have a credit card and bank account linked.) I have bee n the victim of fraud with my PayPal account and they refunded everything almost immediately, taking my word first and then going after the bad guys

As for GoDaddy - I am a VIP member for domains but I do not host there. I own a hosting company and at least three account when we tried to place a site developer in PHP that ran scripts connecting to a DB GoDaddy lagged hard.
For regular brokered account they work fine but when the site has to do work it just runs terrible. I feel they over tax their servers

I do like GoDaddy for the domains. I know they are a little more than some but they have been very good to me and run good domain tracking tools.
I run over 1000 domains at GoDaddy and have been a customer since 1998.
