I am going to have a good look at Joomla after seeing your website.

It looks far superior to a Wordpress site to me.

How hard is it to use? Do you get a admin area like Wordpress and templates etc..
Or is it more like HTML

Joomla is an excellent CMS, it's an outgrowth of the original Mambo CMS.

I started using Joomla several years ago and used to build all my sites with it. It has a very powerful management console and can be enhanced with a number of add-ons and plugins to create an extremely powerful web platform.

Joomla excels in building community portals and membership sites, in fact with a little Joomla know-how you can build an powerful membership site for zero cost.

I also use WordPress a lot, in fact most of the "standard" sites I build these days are based upon WordPress as it simpler to use and usually gets the job done - it's also easier to teach to "newbies". Joomla is slightly more difficult to configure and has a more sophisticated (and more powerful) administrator console.

Though Wordpress is easier, Joomla is far superior. Colin, when you get a grip on the basics, you will be able to do anything you wish with it.

The site you saw, I used just two hours to build it and I have done more jobs with Joomla.

Bill, I will take a look at Joomla24.com and will also love to know how to use Joomla to create membership websites. Do you have any resource that can be of help

I'm about to start a new site and have been trying to figure out how to get wordpress to work like an actual website instead of a blog. I'd used Joomla years ago but it seems that majority of IM people here seem to think Wordpress is much better for SEO and IM. The only thing I can see is a lot of plugins for IM seem to be made for wordpress only.

Any chance you have a list of plug ins for Joomla that corespond with the common plugins used for IM with wordpress? Thanks

I have built a couple of sites on Joomla, and I like it for the most part. The drawbacks are that it doesn't perform as well under a heavy traffic load as some other CMSs (at least not without heavy tweaking or non-free extensions) and it's definitely not as SEO-friendly.

It does build beautiful interactive Web 2.0 sites, though.

I use Joomla on a couple different sites - switched from just using plain html to Joomla. It helps out in a couple different ways - allows for multiple people to update the site easily - without knowing html!

I also like the ability to preview, as before I'd have to upload a doc from my local workstation to see what it looked like online - so I could correct my numerous mistakes.

The learning curve wasn't too bad, but the whole section/category thing takes a bit of getting used to.

The most successful project where I used Joomla was where I was collaborating on a book with about 6 people, and I just setup a page for each chapter - it allowed all of us to update the doc without having to worry about overwriting someones work (as much), plus we could easily see what it looked like online. The book had a lot of pictures, which were a hassle, but much easier than trying to create by hand.

I mostly use crimson editor for my html, so if you are used to Dreamweaver or another wysiwig editor, that part might not be such a big deal for you.

  I used to use Mambo before there was any Joomla and the whole section/category thing was the deal breaker for me. It just made little sense to me that the hierarchical structure of categories was by design limited to two levels deep.
  
  Since then, I've noticed that modules have become available to allow for deeper nesting of categories, many of which are pretty hackish, requiring patches to be applied to core files. jSeblod CCK - Joomla CCK - Content Construction Kit For Joomla looks OK though. It just makes no sense to me why such functionality wouldn't be implemented in the core.

Indeed folks joomla is a great piece of software, all my websites are built on Joomla, the best part is its opensource and it has a large community support, further there are over 3000 plug and play components available that can be just plugged into the Joomla framework.

Well, if I use a product like this, I would HOPE it has decent support. There seems to be a POPULAR problem:

JoomlaCode > Projects > Joomla! > Tracker > Joomla! 1.5.x Bug Tracker > Edit Tracker Item

I'm sorry, but I work with databases ALL THE TIME, INCLUDING mysql! This is NOT a MYSQL or disk problem. If it were MYSQL, I would have had it elsewhere. OTHER people would have had it elsewhere. And a bad disk would certainly show up elsewhere ALSO! OF COURSE the database table rebuild works, the table data is reset. But that isn't a fix. A fix would mean it doesn't happen anymore. If your cars brakes don't work, you won't accept it as a fix if someone crashes it into a tree(though your car is stopped). You want the brakes FIXED!

So YEAH, I installed it, I didn't find the time to go through all the code to figure out what is happening. I installed Joomla 1.5.15, The latest version of CB(which apparently is NOT the culprit), and kunena was installed after this problem started. MYSQL is 4.1.x(though that shouldn't matter, and I had the problem with 4.0.x), and php is the latest Cpanel v5 version.

Anyway, it is beyond me why these people figure that ONE table on ONE product somehow triggers a failure in MYSQL that nothing else does. The actual "error" given is actually a database feature. If a record is to be updated, it is to be updated. Trying to insert an update into an existing record causes the database to say "HEY, you made a MISTAKE! That would make a duplicate, and I refuse to do so!".

If one of YOU has the REAL answer, that would be great.

I use Joomla for a couple of my sites, as well as manage some clients sites through Joomla. I love its ability to do nearly anything you want with it. You can probably do anything with enough coding knowledge or money to pay someone to code it for you - but for someone like me who knows basic HTML Joomla is great - allowing me to design a professional looking site in a short amount of time.

The drawbacks to Joomla are that it does take awhile to get the hang of. Much of a larger learning curve than wordpress.

It is rather difficult to create forms in Joomla. There is a standard form it comes with, as well as some modules but I always have a difficult time with anything form related.

It is rather slow, possibly due to its robust nature - and there aren't many ways I have found to speed it up. With Google Caffeine this may become more of an issue.

Support does seem to be an issue. Your best bet is finding someone who can help you through forums.

In regards to the SEO of Jooma vs WP. I don't think there is much of a difference. Joomla has many add ons as does WP that you can download for SEO related purposes.

R.Rapp - For forms, I hear you. I have really struggled with them too in the past. I've found 2 that I use exclusively now. CK Forms (free) and SmartFormer Pro (paid). CK Forms is a line by line basic form but if you really want to be able to move things around, SmartFormer Pro is the way to go. It's a drag and drop type.

On speed, I have many concerns too, esp. with Google Caffeine. "They" say that you have to turn on caching (globally in your Global Configuration, plus turn on GZIP Page Compression.) Also, any components or modules that have separate caching settings, turn them on too. Uninstall any components or modules that you don't/won't use (simply unpublishing won't cut it.) That will limit server requests. Optimize all graphics (of course). Plus, through cPanel, I turn on the Optimize Website. One of my sites was way too heavy so I did all of this and it made a TREMENDOUS difference to load time, file sizes, server requests, etc.

Awesome,open source, great community, innumerable extensions, and huge I mean huge developer network.

Joomla is the definitive Open source CMS on the planet today...

J1.6 on its way cant wait, nested categories, completely revamped ACl and much more..

Just see the features and alpha version is out if you guys what to give it a run

Just few weeks after learning Joomla, one of my friends decided to hand over a National website they have been trying to build with plain HTML, to me and this is what I was able to achieve with it:

This site happens to be my second work with Joomla and I have also come up with several others. I love wordpress no doubt but there is something in me that loves Joomla more.

We will be bidding for another National job pretty soon and one of my team members told me we should go wordpress but I said we should go Joomla and the conclusion is that we should come up with our best of both and see which supercedes.

I am sure it will be JOOMLA!

Come to think of it, my Joomla story started on this forum. I bought a WSO around 2006 on using Joomla but NEVER got a grip on it. I saw the printed WSO some weeks back and I started smiling because the content to me was just child's play.
